  • sounds like "goodbye to romance"...

  • yea, telecaster makes blues heard better than strato does..

    \m/_

  • Very cool! Great stuff!

  • I've never seen any negative comments on this guys videos. =] Thats good :3 I know where to come to escape meanies.

  • My Names Dorian

  • hey justin bloody good stuff bro keep on keepin giving some more woow

Im only dscovering wat the hell the word dorian is .

  • wat is DORIAN????

  • @Piotrshepard

    the second mode.

if you take c major, it's CDEFGABC (ionian mode = 1st)

    take C dorian, it's DEFGABCD

    the order goes:

ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian and locrian

    aeolian is natural minor.

for example c aeolian is a minor, which is c majors relative minor.

    too much theory, i know.

  • @TommittajaFIN that was kind of a retoric question but thanx for the info :)

  • @Piotrshepard

i think sarcastic rather than retoric ;D

  • @TommittajaFIN no definetly retoric

  • @Piotrshepard

    no it's not.

look it up, retoric is nothing like that.

  • @Piotrshepard One says a 'rhetorical question' :)

  • hes using the e minor scale;;;haha;;nice try skinny head

  • you are one positive guy. :)

  • I do love dorian scale.. that was a good one..

  • thank you for this lesson i wish u the best man, my soloing was getting a bit dry i play metal so this works great sped up and on the higher frets thanks a bunch man!

  • @ThatsMyAxe If you knew so much you wouldn't be here watching a instructional video you jackass keep your mouth shut, you might learn something next time.

  • @MrWildboy214 he's right though guys. you should use all 4 fingers so it's easier to play more complicated stuff in the future. it eventually does a toll on your fingers by only using 3. lol. and he said classical and jazz, and jazz is pretty damn close to blues just faster.

  • @ThatsMyAxe This is the blues, not classical ;)

  • @ThatsMyAxe If you wanna play the blues you better forget about the technique and concentrate in the feeling bro!

  • i don't understand why people would dislike any of these videos??

  • i wanna meet this dude

  • arent these mainly in the blues scale?? how is it dorian?

    thanks a lot bro!

  • @themask786 in the licks he adds the major 6th which - in this case - is an f#, which makes it "dorian".

  • well done guitar tutorials...keep posting guitar licks tutorials for free...

  • became fan of u dude,,u r awesome

  • Comment removed

  • key of A minor !

  • Awesome tone! Show us your rig!!!

  • I'm trying the dorian lick, but my fingers are too slow. What can I do?

  • @hawaiidoves practice it at the fastest and CLEANEST you can play it. Push the limit a little too though. thats how you build speed

  • What does that mean, Dorian mode?

  • @hawaiidoves dorain is a mode off a major scale... in this case G major scale... dont worry about the theory if you just want to have fun but a basic music theory book can easily explain modes

  • very clear and percise ,I'm dense but got it right away..

  • how can anybody dislike this video??

  • 2:30 while teaching great licks you are teaching horrible technique. Pinkie works wonders.

  • @andtherewasblood are u sure its a" horrible thech.?"

  • @nichiryas

I don't exactly no what you are trying to imply by quoting me wrong. But yes using all four fingers is better than three. Maybe guitarists are different...I play bass and have some serious stretching to do.

  • @andtherewasblood oh i see... i agree that 4 fingers is better. But I THINK most people will not use pinky for hammer-on and flick-off. try this jimmy page solo. he uses 3 fingers

  • @nichiryas I don't see any reason not to use your pinky. It can only get stronger. When I started playing, using my pinky was difficult, but I did it anyway and now it is just as strong as my other three fingers. I can hammer-on, pull-off, and bend with it fairly easily.

  • @zeppelin1996 well... every people have their own preference. and that is your preference to use pinky, good 4 you. "but I THINK most people will not use pinky for... bla3" =3

  • @zeppelin1996 the reason he says it's important to do that stretch is for dexterity and strength assuming you are a beginner. I know that for that first riff i would definitely use my pinky just cuz it feels more natural.

  • ........Justin, you are a household name in my home. You've videos have taught us many nice songs and licks...thanks.

  • Justin Kicks Ass !!

  • perfect . thank you for teaching us all these things ! you are a blessing !

    love joy

  • ah it feels good to get those down

  • guitar play is ok. commentary unnecessary.

  • 2:50 - 2:56...

    In this river? LOL

  • i agree with you

    JimiTuber

  • man oh man. that s a brilliant tutorial

    thx berh

  • That's very cool and it sounds great, but when covering 4 frets, use your pinky more, and assign one finger for each fret. It's harder to learn but helps later. I had a bad habit of curling up my pinky and not using it for several years, but when I re-trained myself to use it, it opened up new doors musically.

  • true

  • very same thing happened with me and my guitar playing

  • flick offs

  • that's a badass shirt and I'm not even sure who's on it

  • he is from UK

    hometown - Hobart, Tasmania

  • cool t shirt :D

    Love blues

  • Can you spell? It's spelled jazz :-)

  • you wouldn't believe how many 8 yr olds use internet these days

  • he's from england I think. Anywho, how many guitars do you have justin?? i've seen you use like 8 different ones so far

  • sorry i just hate the word anywho

  • lots of very good simple interesting lesson, thank you a lot!

  • Very Nice Licks...

    Is he Australian or English....?

  • I'm australian and he is definitely english

  • @jmacca74173 well im english and he is not english, new zealand maybe??

  • that is a nice shirt :) wer did u get it? xD

    oh yea, good lesson ;)

  • Teaching the world in a better way! Awesome, Keep it coming, and I'll keep watching!

  • good lesson, dude!

  • unobrow

  • This absolutely awesome. Can this be used on the bass guitar?

  • I like the first lick; Justin dude, you got really shiny fingernails. You get a manicure before the vid?

  • Why not use the little finger? I.e. one finger for each fret? And why not use the names of the strings, instead of "lttle string, second string, etc"?

  • "and if you don't like 'em... ignore 'em." haha

  • #5 sounds like mississippi queen

  • licks are great! sounds cool and isn´t hard to play.... but you have a bad digitation

  • licks are nice cam position is shiiiit i don't know wich finger do you use in each seconds-- i need a tab

  • I'm just guessing, but I think his intentions is that you learn the dorian patterns perfectly first and then you should be able to figure out the licks by ear.

And from 2:12 the angle is pretty good, and the licks are explained.perhaps you missed that one.

  • thanks Justin

  • lick one is sexy :)

but i find my strumming hand slows me down when i pick during this lick , any tips or a video that could help ? :)

  • Use your fingernails.

  • work on alternative picking excrescences to increase your picking/ strumming speed then u wont get slowed down.

  • Good stuff here, however the example at 3:00 should utilize the pinky, a much more efficient use of your fingers & not as much of a stretch....

  • I do agree with you, but maybe I'm missing something here?. What's the reason for not using the pinky there justin?

  • mad foock

  • best thing i like about u is the camera position on the fret while u teach, and the voice clarity.. and the way slow you go for beginers like me, thanks a lot bro

  • hehe flick off.

  • Fleek owf.

  • by god is that your own personal setup or are you in a studio? nice gear! good lesson too

  • for modes its the same box pattern for all the fretts along the neck right?

  • very thanks for this lesson !

  • FLICK OFF!!! hahahaha

  • Nice lesson, but why aren't you using your pinky on the 4th position at 2:30and up?

  • i love guitar but i dont know how to play it nice and smooth

  • hablas mucho y tocas poco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tenes que tirar una data que nos sea mas util!! saludos

  • Which guitar effect do you use here, Justin? Cool tele sound.

  • reverb

  • Flick it off, brother!

  • God bless you!

  • are you the guy from the toy dolls?

  • great videos

  • Amazing videos, neep up the good work!

  • You are a gifted teacher. Thanks so much for your videos.

  • are you from the anapolis valley much?

  • that was a nice tut and cool telecaster

  • u are Awesome. Brazil loves u. \ Thx Justin

  • hey justin you are a awesome guitar teacher rock on

  • so you would use dorian licks over a jazz progression because of the two chord?

  • so ur pretty much sayin thats not good?...for pentatonic licks most ppl use 3 fingers cuz its got more flow to it for those kinds of licks..sry to burst ur bubble

  • If you use the third finger, you'll never get enough stamina in the fourth finger to play more complex runs. The third finger only get more flow, because people are unable to use the fourth finger.

  • Every time I watch one of your videos Justin, I get so much better. Because I play more and learn more. I don't know where I'd be without you Justin ;]

  • umm yeah, whats a dorian? yes yes i kno im an idiot.

  • its just like a mode of the major scale its a scale itself

  • 1st guitar lesson i've had and the best.

    Cheers pal.

  • thanks

  • can you tell me.. what kind of guitar is yours.. i want one like yours... thanks..

  • its a fender telecaster

  • the best free lesson so far!!

  • did u memorize all patterns of all seven modes? do all progessional guitar players do that? that ounds pretty hard to memorize

  • my guitar teacher is teaching me to do that, but idk if all players do

  • It's just something you get used to with playing. Well, I did anyways.

  • justin, you are by far the best guitar teacher to offer lessons online. keep up the good work!

  • Food analogies eh? You've been hanging around Pete Whittard too long...... :-p

  • This is all in A, right?

  • Justin you are fantastic. Thanks so much!

  • yeah well I am #208 to see it :)

    rock n roll and blues

  • Justin, your job, your legacy will stay for years. Keep going.

    Galeno, Sao Paulo, Brazil

  • so true,

We all really respect you, Justin!

  • how come other big name players say have your fingers straight parallel against the frets. like dave mustaine for example, i saw a video of him saying that.

  • cos they play metal, not blues... and this is just my opinion, not the only way to play guitar!!

  • i was just wondering. i play lead guitar with my fingers at an angle too. i guess i dont play metal. i wasnt sure if he was referring to metal only or w/e.. but thanks great lesson

  • My first teacher told me that regardless of any "proper" form that someone shows you, the best way to play is how you're comfortable. So if it's easier or smoother one way then go that way.

  • Agreed. In my opinion and experience, so long as you keep slogging away and working out tension, the "correct" hand position for you just magicaly happens when your muscles get big enough.

  • theres almost 2 ways to hold the neck flat against it like u mentioned or like a grip on a bat which many blues plays use mainly because metal players tend to be fast and over the neck and blues players will use big bends which is where the grip helps with huge bends

  • I'm new to scales, but I believe the traditional way to play the Dorian Mode you use your pinkie for those notes way out there. Not your third finger. At least in the first position.

Most other scales like a Triad or Arpeggio seam to be the same going down the neck very often. I'm assuming the Dorion mode is the same. It may not be though.

Some like the power of their third finger and only use their pinkie when they have to.

  • yea, also a lot of players (especially a lot of blues players) believe that you get a better tone out of using the third finger instead of the pinkie

  • ha!...first one to see BL029!!! You sure are doin a lot for the guitar player community, keep it up man. Best lessons here at youtube!
