We need a carrier/amphibious badly. Our nation is too great to not have such capability. But, our nation is too stubborn to have both. A highly automated vessel, a combination of aircraft carrier, and amphibious warfare LHD, with catapults for CF18s (which are carrier capable) would be perfect for us. if a vessel with a crew of under 300 (without airwing) could be designed with both capabilities, with both capabilities able to be brought to bear in a meaningful way, our navy would certainly buy
Apparently, my father was on the 'Bonnie' from the day it was refurbished at Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Anybody have information? His name was Roy Fairfield Empey.
My father was on the Bonaventure (Bonnie) - and was a CPO. I have footage somewhere of a man-transfer between the Bonaventure and another ship - by rope/pulley.
Thanks for posting this terrific footage. While never in the navy, I had the pleasure to fly with ex-Banshee/Tracker drivers Bob Laidler and Wally Sloan in civilian life in the mid-70's. Gentlemen, skilled aviators, and stories that made me wish I had been part of such a fine group. “Yes-Yes-Yes”
@tapdancegirl88 Thanks for making a note. I have helped my dad reconnect with a number of men who served with him with the video. It's been cool to read the notes and emails.
@flerminthegermin well now that the conservatives have a majority government :D. but ya if we do it wont be for a long long time, right now the liberals left the forces in a mess, EVERYTHING needs to be replaced, all coastguard ships, navy in 10 years, just about everything in the air force, minus griffins/ new refuters, all the wear and tear/ army equipment in Afghanistan.
@flerminthegermin unless the population changes and supports a major jump in defense spending the closest thing will get is (in the next 20 years) 2 amphibian assault ships with in time maybe F-35b`s flying off of them. Amphibian assault ships can also be used as natural disaster support ships, with the helo pad and landing craft can deliver aid unmatched, that will shut up the hippies on the purchase. but ya as for the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier............ maybe dreams do come true..

After getting used to looking at the deck of a US carrier you realise how small the HMCS Bonaventure was (and her RAN sister HMAS Melbournbe).
