  • From 0:40 to 1:00

just damn, so real pretty, good texturing and mapping.

  • Those are AMAZING graphics! Took me a while to realize that.

  • Can ya'll do James Dean... PLEASSSSEEEEEEEE!

  • Willis, asian chick, Bergman, but no BOGART???

    For shame...

  • Animation like this combined with MotionScan would be AMAZING!

  • Holy---

  • Beautiful! Thank you!

  • nice. make a story with animated humans like thi.

  • they should remake casablanca like this.

  • V-ray?

  • WOW! Another great video....I'm really impressed! I actually thought Ingrid was real!

  • So, I've conceived of a sequel to a legendary Hollywood blockbuster - I'm wondering how difficult/expensive this, what they used to call "synthesbian" processing is. I ask because spirits of the original starts would be require. What about voice duplication, is that possible too? This is of the utmost sincerity. Please let me know. Thank you.

  • @GaySingleMulatto It would most likely be quite costly. To do something on that scale you would need a team of modelers and animators to not only create your "stars" but also make them live. You would also need quality voice actors to duplicate the original stars voices, speech patterns, etc.

  • @VancouverFilmSchool Eternal thank yous!

  • @GaySingleMulatto Text edit corrections: Synthespians, stars and required. (Whew, what was I on, bath tub meth?)

  • Very lovely, until they started moving. Although that same criticism was levelled at Zemeckis for Beowulf, etc. who had hundreds of animators, massive cutting-edge render farms, and millions of dollars at his disposal, so I'd call this a staggering achievement for one person. Bravo!

  • your amazing!

  • This is outstanding; very life-like...(I hope Max received a good grade). Thanks for including the interview, with more information.

  • omg i thought it was real people! cieh anak bangsa :) bangga bangga!

  • wow. don't know what else to say.

  • amazing....just amazing

  • i love it, i just think the eyeballs moved too smoothly on the asian chickenhead. It's off somehow I cant put my dick skinners on it.

  • wait...is this 3D animation or real people?

  • @laydeeblush33 The characters are all CG! Check out the link (to an interview with the creator) in the video info box above.

  • @laydeeblush33 i think its a 3d animation of real people XD

  • wonderful and very inspiring.

  • keren banget nih... nice work bro...

  • wow, first thought it was real, only when the people came into the picture, then i got it

  • brilliant!!! absolute genius.nice,nice

  • I have to say that I first watched this video after my first time watching Casablanca on TCM about two years ago....and I keep coming, and coming to it; it's brilliant!!! absolute genius...I first thought it was a colorised version of Mrs. Bergman...wow, I wonder is this a students' project, a promo for the school? It looks much better than Avatar, and this must be about 2-3 years ago? I wonder what could you do today with it...maybe a Wizard of Oz thing? Congrats from Chile!

  • Weird...

  • muy bien

  • kereeeeeeenn....!!!

  • This is showing me that 3d is pushing itself out of the farside of uncanny valley. Natural movements are still very very tricky but that could be done with actors....itd essentially seperate acting from looks which would be unusual. Good luck, I hope this becomes feasible to do on any major scale within the next handful of years.

  • whoa... i didn't realize this was 3d until i saw bruce willis, and your comment!

  • song hye kyo~~!!

    aww..but she's way prettier than that :)

  • Well... :D

At first it looked pretty awesome. With that female character not moving... pretty much at all. But then, add some movement and they start to look more and more like polygons. You know... just creepy.

  • Comment removed

  • holyyyyyy shit that was awesome!

  • wow wow wow! pas liat si inggrid bregman, i was speechless. this is amazing! great job to Max Wahyudi.

  • It's a great rendering, still some unnatural movements in the eyes where you can tell the difference but impressive.

The suggestion that we could replace actors now is a bit silly. It's good as its own medium vg's, Pixar stuff, but it'll never replace live action film.

Also it's not even close to the beauty of Ingrid Bergman's face (all one has to do is look up the real deal in youtube Casablanca)

and that's not an insult to the animators. Just a compliment to Bergman's real life beauty.

  • sumpah...bengong!!!...

  • this is so realistic. NICE

  • Extremely realistic, almost hard to believe it was computer generated. However, one or two flaws tickled my relative "connoisseur" eyes .Bergman's gaze was famously dreamy and contemplative, but in the video she seems(pardon the term) "stoned". It may seem paradoxical, but the more realistic cg characters become, the harder it is to palliate their flaws(go look up "uncanny valley"if you don't believe me). Also, i noticed her hands do not match the music at 0:35.

  • wow.

  • wow at first i thought the whole thing was real except for the restaurant and Song Hye Kyo but this whole thing was an animation. whoever made this is really good

  • Wow, i didn't read the information of the video so i had no idea until the end that it was even animation at all. That was AMAZING.

  • same here lol

  • that was uber!

  • holy manolo that was good

  • I'm completely stunned!!!

What renderer and skin materials did you use?

please tell me i never get so realistic skin results...

Until i read comments i tought it wasnt 3d, but some video FX demo :D

  • @endocomar93:

he used the Maya_fast_skin shader for mental ray.

  • Please answer this question objectively:

Can Max's mental ray or brazil do the job this realistic?

  • They should do this to make new films with old actors.

Imagine Ingrid Bergman in a film with Bruce Willis, there are so many possibilites

  • I would sell my soul to be able to do something like this. This is very inspiring. Thanks.

  • but this takes so much more time than actually filming it

  • What's the song by the way ? I kinda like it :D , some1 give me the title name ? :)

  • Awesome man , this is the most realistic 3D I've seen since the Nvidia Head Demo , :D

  • damn thats talent

  • omg... i want to join that school!!!!!

  • You're very talented.

  • That is amazing work. Bruce Willis looked damn real. Great job

  • outstanding!

  • Amazing. Use this to bring The Joker back for Batman 3.

  • lol.. it's funny you should mention this, max has actually modeled the joker and put it up on his vfs web page

  • wow, ingrid bergman looks absolutely amazing. you've really captured the nuance of the actress.

  • Song Hae Kyo FTW!!

  • The characters are so expressive that I stop looking for the animation and just watch it. That doesn't happen often, I'm really impressed.

  • incredible talent!

  • astounding

  • That is pretty inspirational. I just want to congratulate you for your success as truly one of the best modelers I've seen in the world!

  • Okay... ini keren banget....

i'm known this trailer from your friend Paty...

  • my mouth is open in astonishment. its amazing what you can do with a computer program from entertainment to saving a life.

  • haaa

  • There is a poster for this in the school hallway - I had to stare at it for a good 10 minutes before I could tell it was 3D!

Amazing job. One of my favorites :)

  • Very cool except the beginning... where she has a very enlarged head.

    Otherwise, it was awesome.

  • That deserves an applaud!!!

  • It's so realistic that it's uncanny. Great work!

  • Awesome work, very very nice!!!

  • you can still tell the difference...but still cool

  • PERFECT!!!

  • jesus...soooo odd!

  • Good on ya!!! Awesome work

  • AMAZING

  • instanly hired. THis person FUCKING ROCKED MY WORLD>

  • that's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • whaaattt! hat's not real?????!!! that'ss insane!!!

  • thats absolutely amazing how real they look

  • wow.... wierd.

  • And he's Indonesian. Which makes me reallllllly proud, and at the same time, envious LOL.

  • Wait... let me get this...

    This was NOT real???

Unteil I saw the ending I really thought it was real... that's sort of... spooky :D

    More than just amazing.

  • Amazing! Amazing!

  • Excellent.

  • Wow! That has to be some of the best character CG I've ever seen. Very well done!

  • Very nice

  • I was wondering whether this was real or not until the end.. Very impressive !

  • astounding. just that, and breathtaking...

  • i love how this is shot. how in the very beginning it is soo different from any other way ive seen things shot. great job.

  • Awesome!

  • No words can describe how I feel amazed by this reel. This is the kind of work I can watch again and again and still pleases the eyes, not only for the technique but for how smoothly you managed to bring your art to the next level by putting all together with your talent in a way we still doubt of what our eyes see.

    Congratulations!

  • truly incredible.

  • i've been trained to know a visual effect from a live action shot and i thought it was real up until the wireframe came up. great work!

  • wow, bruce will's in a vancouver video, i definetly love VFS

  • your are my inspiration...

  • Max great job!!!! Im very sad, because this is not the original sound!!!! Pedro did a great job with the original song!!! this is not the sound of the VFS Sound Design Students!!! this is an amazing Modeling Reel!

  • the greatest animation students....

  • Wow, the Ingrid Bergman looks very real [her mimic!!]. Impressive (:

  • wow!cool!

  • The photorealism in this is utterly amazing. I actually consciously remarked to myself as it showed the face of Bergman that the filmmakers really did a great job of making the actress up to really look like she was from the early 20th century (rather than just looking like a 21st century girl dressed in 20th century clothes). Bergman is animated subtly and realistically. I only realized it was animated at all when I saw Bruce Willis in the credits, which did ring a little fake.

    Very well done.

  • It's amazing!

Max you are a great artist.

  • whoamygosh!

    they look like they're real!

    Nice job!

  • Ingrid in sepia colour looks amazing, well needs a bit of more animation on her face, but yeah, nicely done.

  • wow...this is the most photo-realistic project I've seen from all the Reels posted in youtube, amazing. what 3d software did you use? (please don't say maya!) LOL

  • Max primarily used Zbrush and Maya on his reel. 3D Total has a tutorial by Max that goes into his process - google it and you'll find it.

  • Why don't u like maya?

  • wow amazing looks so real

  • a la vestia, crei que eran personas de verdad o.o

  • hebat mas.. ^^

  • wow, that was incredible, it took me forever to realize it was cg, the woman playing piano looked veryyy reall.

  • WOW I THOUGHT IT WAS REAL PEOPLE! amazing!

  • vraiment terrible good job

  • I thought everything was real! Bruce Willis gave it away, but until then I was completely clueless... wow.

  • kool

  • Wow! Simply atonishing!

  • why does it show the david at the end?

  • very pro, congrats

  • what a fxxk?!!that's amazing!!!!!VFS rulez...!

  • Truly amazing work,..you have the modeling / rigging skills of a god...

  • I'm from DD12, digital design program!...

Buat om max! gila mantaph abeess!!

    salam VFS!

  • oh my god! They weren't real..I only realized that at the end. That's amazing...

  • Me too.

  • gila! mantap.....!!! sampe ketemu di vancouver kalo gak pindah ke negara lain.. :p.

now its time for me to work hard in VFS. :p

  • wow, fantastic, what is the title of the background music? it is so beautiful

  • This is wonderful. A ten.

    Here's looking at you kid.

  • This is very Casablanca inspired. Casablanca stars Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart and that's the same piano and same room they were in in while they were lovers in Paris in the movie. And of course, the song "As Time Goes By" is the theme song of the Casablanca. I love that film.

It looks as if Ingrid Bergman lived again in this clip.

  • OMIGOD

    she wasn't real?!?!?!!!

  • Brilliant and beautiful.

  • orang indo yach ?

  • WOW!!!

    Ingrid lives!

    It's Alive!!

    IT'S ALIVE!!!!!

    MUAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Brilliant! Bruce Willis doesn't feel as real as the other 2 though. But it's BRILLIANTO!

  • Hey hey hey, wait a second, I watched this a while ago; isn't this the video that a Student presented as his portfolio BEFORE entering VFS?!

Every time I see it is just as good. Love it!

  • No- the asian model at the end was what he used to get into VFS. Ingrid Bergmen and Bruce Willis were accomplished while he was here.

  • max wahyudi sounds lika an indonesian name.... are you by any chance an indonesian student..?

  • in vancouver...?

  • yes , he's an indonesian. lol

  • wow.. i'm confused now... i'm starting my course in vfs next month, i dont know whether i should specialise in modeling or animation..

    this is just too good!!!

  • very cool

  • wait wait...waaaaaaaait.

so your telling me that this was just animation?!!!!??!!!

    0.0

    wow..

    1847985700 stars

  • oh wow...

    really great...

and song hye-kyo is there! lolerz

  • This must of taken forever to render

  • This is the most unbelievable video I've ever seen, well done to the animator!

  • holy shit. i didnt even know that the piano girl was real. oh ya. i kinda picked it up on the bruce willis part, but damn dude! haha.. weird thing is, i live in vancouver! I WANNA STUDY THEERE NOW!

  • wow, i didn't realise it was cgi until 1:13, absolutely spectacular

  • really your work is so good,at first sight i think a woman she Real,

    goood work keep it up

  • Oh my GOD! When it showed the statues I thought the 3-d model was the real thing and the pic was fake. Holy crap thats darn good animation.

  • oops.. mean astounding lol!

  • Astoubding.. really loved it!

  • holy shit i didnt even know it was model

  • That was insanely realistic!!!!

  • Wow, you really brought Ingrid back to life!! This was amazing!

  • The Ingrid Bergman model looks really good. With some more tweaking we'll be able to have classic actors come back in animated movies!

  • All three still have that spooky zombie stare. They just can't make their eyes look human. I wonder who will.

  • Does anybody know the name of this song? I tried As Time Goes By, but that is not it.

  • It's a custom made music by one of VFS staff, VFS don't have license to use As time goes by.....

  • Beautiful vidéo and song

  • wonderful work. it would have been awesome to see more.

  • Astounding

The future political and social implications of such forgeries of reality are truly frightening

  • holy cow that was real! lol

  • VFS has done it again. u never stop amazing me with you guys/girls awesome talents! this is a wonderful piece of Art, that's right ppl i said ART! there should b a place for the person that created this in the MGM or Warner studios archives & preservation dept. Glad this was a Promoted video on YouTube main page, it definitely deserves it!

  • Yes okay it looks completly real, I'll give you that.. but I don't like that fact that you HAD to use one of the most CLASSIC movies ever.

  • next lesson. knowing that real humans are impatient when moving about. even well mannered are not that slow poke when moving. why people can tell which is real and which is animated.

  • bagus... max edwin

    modelling dan rendernya keren...

    klo bisa ditambah lg actionnya

    tp jempol untuk anda.. :)

  • dfd

  • no, i don't belive this! :O A-ma-ziing!

  • GREAT WORK. It really looks like Ingrid! You are really talented. And Casablaca is one masterpiece....... thank you for making it. SOOO GOOOD!

  • Every time I get near a piano. I attempt my own version of "As Time Goes By"... It's a great hobby...really!

  • Gay

  • it looks pretty well, but i must be see in action.the movements are delicate but still artificial.

  • wow. that. was. awesome.

  • That is really impressive, but I'll always prefer live action...

    Really stunning though.
