Bock sound so the other players can hear better, and capture sound better to be put through a PA system or to be recorded. More capture than block.

Sorry, I mean it helps to capture (record) the live performance sound, for if say the band was making a live CD.
And if I had a drummer in the band, I wouldn't want to just kick him out of every live performance.

Nah, basically it's to kind of keep the sound of the drums in the cage, kind of a way to muffle the sound going out, and minimize the sound going in. Because it's live music, he's using drum microphones. And when you're getting outside noise near the drums, the mic pics them up.

Plus isnt is wrong to put a wall between the musician and the congregation?
