The engine is actually in backwards (exhaust end goes toward the front of the plane. The panel that is removed right under the open cockpit has forced air intake to the engine compartment. If you look at the other video from the same user of us starting it up you can see the screen around the intake.
@circusboy90210 The exhaust of this engine has very little thrust as it was originally designed to drive hydraulics in a larger aircraft. It does have a output shaft just like a piston engine, and is rated for 90 hp at the shaft. As I have said before the plane is a turboprop not a true jet.
@ThatO1guy And unless im blind there is no gearbox or prop on that engine so yes its a turbojet. Anything with a jet core is a turbojet. Its what you add after that core that changes the title. A turbofan is a turbojet with a huge first stage fan. A turboshaft is a turbojet with a gearbox and output shaft. A turboprop is a turbojet with a gearbox connected to a prop. Since you wanna get specific.
@superskullmaster There is indeed a gearbox. The propeller was not in yet as we were just testing the engine control module. In the top right of the engine compartment you can see a grey box attached to the engine. That is the gear box. The guy that uploaded also uploaded another video that shows the engine much better. Search for BD-5 Turbine Startup
@circusboy90210 Technically the exhaust is not what creates the thrust. Its the redirection of mass that creates thrust. If exhaust created thrust rockets would not work in space. Exhaust is a byproduct.
Well Being a member of the team I can say that we did not have much choice in the engine that was put in this particular plane. We already had access to the T62-A1 turbine with the quantum conversion kit. This engine was converted to be put in one of these aircraft and the cost of obtaining another engine is quite substantial. Also this is not going to be a true jet. Instead it will be a turboprop using a variable pitch propeller in the original push prop style.
I wonder if the BD-5J can be fitted with the small První Brnenská Strojírna (PBS) TJ-100-A which produce 247 lbf thrust. This engine is new and made in the Czech Republic. PBS TJ-100-A Envelope Temperatures-30 ~ +50 °C (-22 ~ +122 °F) Altitude 0 to 8000 m (0 - 26000 ft) Speed < Mach 0,8 Maximum thrust TJ-100-A 110 daN (247 lbf) Fuel JET A-1, JP5, JP8 Oil system 3 cST / 5 cST Length 625 mm (24.6 in) Diameter 272 mm (10.7 in) Total weight 20,6 kg (45.4 lb) Did you evaluate the TJ-100 A?

@ThatO1guy why would you put the exhuast towards the front?? the exhaust is what creates the trust. this is not a piston engine.

@superskullmaster in laymen s terms though exhaust does create thrust.
