So silly for Seymours to produce such a "EMG copy" pickups, even design is copied. Just to cover market. As if Seymours don't have their own ideas and can't create something new.
Who will buy expensive Blackouts, which appeared a while ago and created such a "EMG copy" pickups, when EMG is a leader company of active pickups and have 20 years of experience???!
(Everytime they delete my comment, if I can't express my own opinion?)
@BeboAltizer Did you check out the active P90s that are on EMG's website, or something? There's stuff like P81 and P85. I've never tried them, though.
Im happy that theres finally someone that knows what the hell hes talking about when it comes to explaining things in front of a camera about a guitar
do blackouts come with 100% quick connect potentiometers and such like emgs? i kinda don't want to solder but my 7 is routed for passives and emg doesn't make pickups that size.
@darksymphonybass well alexis signature emg is a passive with a boost, which pretty much is what a blackout emulates but with crisper tone. So why would he bother going through all the work having a knob to boost etc, when he can just slap in a blackout and it does he work for him.
@darksymphonybass the emg actaully......sucks shit, he tours with the seymour and in the studio he cant change his tone anywich way so his tone can afford to use the passive emg
I replaced my passive jackson pickups with a set of blackouts, took me a while to do the instalation, the battery fits into the cavity were all the pots and shit are, just tape it or wateva
@MrGuitarist1000 Routing isn't necessary. You can fit the 9V battery inside the control compartment on the back of your guitar. The routing is more of an asthetic/convenience type of thing.
So if i want to change the EMG 81 out of my jackson and put in a duncan blackout or blackout metal do i need to solder or is it more simple than that? someone please help
@ZacharyWeekend Assuming you mean 3 humbuckers, i'm pretty sure you can. You can fit 3 humbuckers on a strat and normal Blackouts/EMGs are sized like normal pickups (unlike the 7-string versions). But even then, 3 humbuckers on a guitar is just unnecessary and looks weird.
Yeah everyone wants to hear him say EMG already XD But there are actually other active pickups out there but there just so little known because EMG's and Blackouts are so popular they don't get any recognition. I'd like to get the blackouts and try them out one day.
i have this pickups.clean sound is incredibly bright, but less warm then the passive pickups.distorted sounds for me are awesome,so much sustain and compression.true modern sound.pinch harmonics got balls with this
It's actually about respect. Sorry if it makes watching uncomfortable, it's just not in our nature to denegrate competitors. But we're obviously having a significant impact, otherwise you wouldn't see things like metal covers, X-series, etc. It's good for everyone.
i need help. has anyone here put a seymour duncan blackout in a strat style guitar (no pickguard). i handed it over to my instructor to install and he said its going to be a bitch replacing all passive components i.e jack, volume knob, etc. and he said without a toggle switch it will have to be always active. i hate sounding like a dumbass but i know jack shit about electronics maybe a little, but can anyone give a link, clue or somethin as to the instillation of this in five way switch guitar?
I am getting an Ibanez RG7321 for Christmas from guitar center. The sound is a little bit muddy, and I'm thinking that's from the old, used, rusty strings. Do I need to get different pickups, or just change strings?
are you for real if i buy a guitar with emgs and want the blackouts i just take out the emgs and pop in the balckouts with out any soldering and stuff??????
Is have a blackout 2 for the bridge, but whit the jumper its a bit noisy, but has a very strong tone, whitout the jumper the tone is barely the same whitout the noise, It's a great pickup
coil tapping gives a more strat sound which is nice when playing blues. I like have a guitar with the versatility to move from metal to blues to classic rock.
hay but seriously! My warlock needs new pickups and IDK what to get? I mean the 81/85 combo from EMG sounds good and all my favorite guitarists use them =P

thats the schecter blackjack c-7 atx! i already have seen this video for some time ago, but later i get intrested in this guitar... now i like this video^^
would a blackout AHB2, same as blackout metal i believe, be a good choice to put into a b.c.rich warlock? im just worried tht maybe it wont fit or really nething else
Alright, check it out, Im getting a Fat Strat, but i want to upgrade the pickups. I want s Seymour Duncan Blackout Single in the neck posistion, what would sound good in the bridge humcuker for like, rhythms and stuff? Anyone?
If you're asking about the Blackouts, then yes they're permanent, and epoxy potted. If you're asking about the P-Rails, they have tops on them that encompass the coil and lock them together. Those tops are currently available in black only, and because the P90 coil is packed with so much wire, it's not conducive to putting a metal cover of any kind. But there could be another color or two available in the future.
Ha! Yeah that's NAMM for you. The NAMM police keep you pretty quiet, and as you can see in some of the other videos, the "sound demos" are basically Joe aiming the mic toward the amp :) So yeah, NAMM is basically brochure-talk.LOL
i was reading on the seymour duncan site and it said that the metal one only fits in the bridge position. should i just get the regular blackout for the neck position cuz the AHB-2 is so fucking brutal
and yeah. seymour duncan probably want to retain the brand image of having a 'traditional' sound with no battery boost or other 'additives', but to realistically continue from a business view, it was necessary to take market share. it's just the way the world turns i guess. and if they do a better job than EMG, then great. but for now, untill i have a reason to, i'm stikking to my trust 81 and 60
I can understand your hesitance. I was hesitant too. But honestly, since I purchased my first pair of Blackouts (originals), I haven't even considered EMG. They just don't sound right to me anymore. Blackouts have all the body, crunch, and harmonics of an EMG, while still feeling passive and "real", as opposed to brittle and digital. Seriously, these things make any set up sound utterly and positively metal. And even with all that, they roll off nice and clean.
I haven't. I've heard of this mod, but I would have to assume that simply giving an EMG more "juice", as it were, would not help it's balance issues, and would make the "digital" side of the active pickup even more distinct. More output, that's for sure, but the cons to me should out weight the pros with that setup. The noise level would be awful, I would suspect. I have heard EMGs with the "Afterburner" installed, and though it was neat, it was hard to control, and there was a ton of noise.
Well then you need to do a bit more research,my friend...
The 18v mod actually *decreases* the serility and 'digital' feel, particularly on the cleans. It adds slightly more headroom to avoid the harsh clipping some do not like and it makes the EMG more "organic" sounding (for lack of a better term)
Seriously, research it yourself. I think there may even be some 9v vs. 18v EMG demos right here on Youtube.
I flat told you I had no experience with it. If you already knew, then why did you ask my opinion? Such a quick response, did someone ask when they didn't need to ask, perhaps? And for what reason, to be a jerk?
And you can recite the adverts if you want, but if I were you, I wouldn't rely on a video alone. I'd go out and find one, and give it a shot myself through a setup similar to my rig. I personally still don't see how simply giving the same pickup more voltage would do anything but increase it's issues, but I'll give it a listen.
I have done the 18v mod, to all of my EMG equipped Guitars.
That's why I earlier gave you the following informed opinion:
"The 18v mod actually *decreases* the serility and 'digital' feel, particularly on the cleans. It adds slightly more headroom to avoid the harsh clipping some do not like and it makes the EMG more "organic" sounding (for lack of a better term)"
Which only brings me to my first point. Why state it as if you were asking my opinion? "I have to wonder if the 18v mod to the EMGs puts them more into the Blackout "passive feel" you describe." Why not say: "You should try the 18v mod." And the whole "more research" comment makes you sound like an ass.
I asked if you had A/B'd the 18vEMG to the blackout. You basically said: "No but the 18v can only suck worse than the 9v"(meaning still no comparison to the blackouts)Then,I offered that you research it b/c that's not the case....the 18vEMG doesn't suck at all, it is better than the 9v.
But it still doesn't tell us if the 18v compares to the Blackout, only that the 18v is better than the 9v.
The only "ass" inferences being drawn here are due to your poor reading comprehension skills.
No, not being a jerk at all.....sorry you feel that way.
Are you wearing cactus underwear?
You said:
"but I would have to assume that simply giving an EMG more "juice", as it were, would not help it's balance issues, and would make the "digital" side of the active pickup even more distinct."
To which I responded that you should do a bit more research on the subject because the opposite seems to be true.
They should quit calling the competitor's actives "old"... it just reminds people that it took them 30 years to put out what the others have offered all along.
what if i only want 1 p-rail. i want to change my bridge and leave my stock neck in there cuz i dont got the money.

emoboi311 3 years ago
are those black covers permanent or can you replace them with the chrome or nickel covers from a gibson?
adlankj 3 years ago
there not covers.. thts just wat they look like normally.. or at least if there covers they dont come off that i know of. The emg ones dont anyway
triviumrule666 3 years ago
It's the body of the internals, so the black cover is like the case of the pickup and it's permanently sealed
alfalfasprout69 3 years ago
If you're asking about the Blackouts, then yes they're permanent, and epoxy potted. If you're asking about the P-Rails, they have tops on them that encompass the coil and lock them together. Those tops are currently available in black only, and because the P90 coil is packed with so much wire, it's not conducive to putting a metal cover of any kind. But there could be another color or two available in the future.

Almost 10 minutes of brochure-talk but no playing?
SlowhandKev 3 years ago 3
Ha! Yeah that's NAMM for you. The NAMM police keep you pretty quiet, and as you can see in some of the other videos, the "sound demos" are basically Joe aiming the mic toward the amp :) So yeah, NAMM is basically brochure-talk.LOL

i was reading on the seymour duncan site and it said that the metal one only fits in the bridge position. should i just get the regular blackout for the neck position cuz the AHB-2 is so fucking brutal
vnalder1234 3 years ago
na, get a emg 60. Has clearer cleans, but the SD blackout metal is way better than a emg

p-rails!!! sweet!!
i love the sound of p90s but i also love a humbucker. this is perfect for me
tcrangle963 3 years ago
these things would fit in to an ibanez s series?
josito9909 3 years ago
i love how he avoids mentioning EMGs haha.
and yeah. seymour duncan probably want to retain the brand image of having a 'traditional' sound with no battery boost or other 'additives', but to realistically continue from a business view, it was necessary to take market share. it's just the way the world turns i guess. and if they do a better job than EMG, then great. but for now, untill i have a reason to, i'm stikking to my trust 81 and 60

TaskforceDingbat 3 years ago 4
Have you compared the Blackouts with EMGs that have been modded to 18v?
I have to wonder if the 18v mod to the EMGs puts them more into the Blackout "passive feel" you describe.
jxmxfxpx 3 years ago
TaskforceDingbat 3 years ago
Well then you need to do a bit more research,my friend...
The 18v mod actually *decreases* the serility and 'digital' feel, particularly on the cleans. It adds slightly more headroom to avoid the harsh clipping some do not like and it makes the EMG more "organic" sounding (for lack of a better term)
Seriously, research it yourself. I think there may even be some 9v vs. 18v EMG demos right here on Youtube.
jxmxfxpx 3 years ago
I flat told you I had no experience with it. If you already knew, then why did you ask my opinion? Such a quick response, did someone ask when they didn't need to ask, perhaps? And for what reason, to be a jerk?
TaskforceDingbat 3 years ago
And you can recite the adverts if you want, but if I were you, I wouldn't rely on a video alone. I'd go out and find one, and give it a shot myself through a setup similar to my rig. I personally still don't see how simply giving the same pickup more voltage would do anything but increase it's issues, but I'll give it a listen.
TaskforceDingbat 3 years ago
I have done the 18v mod, to all of my EMG equipped Guitars.
That's why I earlier gave you the following informed opinion:
"The 18v mod actually *decreases* the serility and 'digital' feel, particularly on the cleans. It adds slightly more headroom to avoid the harsh clipping some do not like and it makes the EMG more "organic" sounding (for lack of a better term)"
jxmxfxpx 3 years ago
Which only brings me to my first point. Why state it as if you were asking my opinion? "I have to wonder if the 18v mod to the EMGs puts them more into the Blackout "passive feel" you describe." Why not say: "You should try the 18v mod." And the whole "more research" comment makes you sound like an ass.
TaskforceDingbat 3 years ago
I asked if you had A/B'd the 18vEMG to the blackout. You basically said: "No but the 18v can only suck worse than the 9v"(meaning still no comparison to the blackouts)Then,I offered that you research it b/c that's not the case....the 18vEMG doesn't suck at all, it is better than the 9v.
But it still doesn't tell us if the 18v compares to the Blackout, only that the 18v is better than the 9v.
The only "ass" inferences being drawn here are due to your poor reading comprehension skills.
Typical..
jxmxfxpx 3 years ago
No, not being a jerk at all.....sorry you feel that way.
Are you wearing cactus underwear?
You said:
"but I would have to assume that simply giving an EMG more "juice", as it were, would not help it's balance issues, and would make the "digital" side of the active pickup even more distinct."
To which I responded that you should do a bit more research on the subject because the opposite seems to be true.
Nothing jerk-wad about it at all.

I want to hear a EMG next to a Blackout on the same amp and same distortion, no difference, a fair rating.
Im not rich so when I want to buy a SD blackout I want to be sure its worth it, cuz im quite happy with my EMGs.
Thundermaned 3 years ago 6
yeah thats how i feel, however i've read so much to support the blackouts, i highly doubt we could be let down

They should quit calling the competitor's actives "old"... it just reminds people that it took them 30 years to put out what the others have offered all along.
The P-Rail is a pretty awesome idea, though.
