  • what if i only want 1 p-rail. i want to change my bridge and leave my stock neck in there cuz i dont got the money.

  • are the blackout singles heavier/better for thrash/death metal or should i get the hot rails/cool rails?

  • I'm getting Blackouts for my 7 string, just because they are cheaper than EMG's, I am worried though, I hope they are as good.

  • i want active p90s for my les paul.

  • @BeboAltizer Did you check out the active P90s that are on EMG's website, or something? There's stuff like P81 and P85. I've never tried them, though.

  • @Requius76 i checked them out, but i havent tried them out either, and im kinda skiddish lol

  • I think I may very well use these.

  • I'm sorry but seymour duncan pickups are lifeless EMG's and Dimarzio are so much better

  • Im happy that theres finally someone that knows what the hell hes talking about when it comes to explaining things in front of a camera about a guitar

  • do blackouts come with 100% quick connect potentiometers and such like emgs? i kinda don't want to solder but my 7 is routed for passives and emg doesn't make pickups that size.

  • @thatguy5557123 Yes they do for sure.

  • Alexi is with SD now?

Thought he had his sig EMG HZ Pickup....?

  • @darksymphonybass well alexis signature emg is a passive with a boost, which pretty much is what a blackout emulates but with crisper tone. So why would he bother going through all the work having a knob to boost etc, when he can just slap in a blackout and it does he work for him.

  • @godlikecharacta yeah but the switch is an optional boost ya know? it could be good for some styles but not good for others

  • @darksymphonybass the emg actaully......sucks shit, he tours with the seymour and in the studio he cant change his tone anywich way so his tone can afford to use the passive emg

  • @RhoadsFan9

    makes sense

  • @RhoadsFan9 He still uses Blackouts?

  • @Vnalder as far as i know

  • I replaced my passive jackson pickups with a set of blackouts, took me a while to do the instalation, the battery fits into the cavity were all the pots and shit are, just tape it or wateva

  • @Belleraphon100 do they also feature solderless like emgs?

  • @CrushedJustice exactly the same as the emg setup

  • HOOOOT BLACKJACK!

  • u can do h/s/h wtih black outs?

  • @CrushedJustice Yes you can

  • @MrGuitarist1000 Routing isn't necessary. You can fit the 9V battery inside the control compartment on the back of your guitar. The routing is more of an asthetic/convenience type of thing.

  • I get a lot of noise out of my 8 string Blackouts, I'd hate to hear my tone with that extra 14db of noise I'm not getting haha.

  • Alexi uses his signature series now.

    EMG ALX

  • So if i want to change the EMG 81 out of my jackson and put in a duncan blackout or blackout metal do i need to solder or is it more simple than that? someone please help

  • @MMbass420 solder, but why would you want to change it if you already have a good pickup

  • @MMbass420 No you don't need to solder, it will slip right into the existing connector. wildnest1 is incorrect.

  • @MMbass420 If you already have active pick-ups, it should be very easy to change.

  • What guitar is in his lap?

  • @Protcall schecter blackjack ATXc-7 7 string. probably an older model because i cant find any with yellow binding. only white

  • Thought these pickups are not my scene, I love watching stuff like this. Thanks for posting.

  • he's trying so hard not to say "emg" when he's referring to "other active pickups"

  • Where are the Blackout single coils?? Musicians Friend doesn't have them!! No one has them!!

  • i love invaders. sd owns

  • i wish they were small enough to put three on a freaking strat, i cant imagine how it would sound.

  • @ZacharyWeekend ...they have single coils genius.

  • @ZacharyWeekend Assuming you mean 3 humbuckers, i'm pretty sure you can. You can fit 3 humbuckers on a strat and normal Blackouts/EMGs are sized like normal pickups (unlike the 7-string versions). But even then, 3 humbuckers on a guitar is just unnecessary and looks weird.

  • is that true? can you go to the store get the pickup, just plug out your emg and plug that one in with quik-connect?

  • TBs are still better.

  • Love it !

    PremierGuitar !!

Between this and True Fire TV

we have all the guitar and Music videos we need !!

  • @thricegod1288 dude joe coffee's the man he's better than paul from guitar world!

  • Yeah everyone wants to hear him say EMG already XD But there are actually other active pickups out there but there just so little known because EMG's and Blackouts are so popular they don't get any recognition. I'd like to get the blackouts and try them out one day.

  • the blackout metals are so awesome i really gonna buy them

  • Just bought a Ibanez RGD2127Z. Want to put SD Blackouts Phase 1. Will they fit?

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 probably

  • what kind of guitar is that red one that he is holding :)

  • lol i nrly pissed myself thinking of these

  • who needs emg when you sd!

  • He's trying so hard not to say emg 81 lol

  • What is that guitar?

  • looks like a schecter BlackJack 7-string

  • The red one with the p90? Old Ibanez S series.

  • Haha, whenever he says "Any other active pikcup" he means EMG haha.

  • where can you get the blackout singles? i havent seen them anywere

  • I know man, I've searched for like 2 hours an I couldn't find them. Wtf?

  • i have this pickups.clean sound is incredibly bright, but less warm then the passive pickups.distorted sounds for me are awesome,so much sustain and compression.true modern sound.pinch harmonics got balls with this

  • jesus pussy, just say emg, no one's gonna shoot you in the head!

  • @Gtrsecks lmao i kno right

  • @Gtrsecks It's a legal thing that they can't say EMG on camera when talking about direct comparisons.

  • It's actually about respect. Sorry if it makes watching uncomfortable, it's just not in our nature to denegrate competitors. But we're obviously having a significant impact, otherwise you wouldn't see things like metal covers, X-series, etc. It's good for everyone.

  • @Gtrsecks

There's more than 1 active pickup brand. Such as Tesla.

  • Look at him struggle to not say emg lol

  • whats the difference between the 7 string blackout phase 1 and phase 2?

  • whats better emg seymour duncan or dimarzio

  • i need help. has anyone here put a seymour duncan blackout in a strat style guitar (no pickguard). i handed it over to my instructor to install and he said its going to be a bitch replacing all passive components i.e jack, volume knob, etc. and he said without a toggle switch it will have to be always active. i hate sounding like a dumbass but i know jack shit about electronics maybe a little, but can anyone give a link, clue or somethin as to the instillation of this in five way switch guitar?

  • btw sorry for the long ass question

  • maybe get a non-shit strat?

  • it is a non shit strat its a just a strat body, its a washburn mercury. i wouldnt touch a fender 'shat' with a 10 foot pole

  • looks like an emg

whats better this or emg 707tw??

  • i personally dont like those pickups. there not half as clear as the blackouts

  • For so many years world using the EMG,why should Samour Duncan produce active system picups?

  • Because the SD's give a different tone than the EMG's

  • do the SD ahb 3's hav this jumper coz I cannot find it on minexD

  • No, just the AHB-2.

  • is it possible to replace passive pickups with pickups like this and if so what would i need 2 do, cause obviously i wanna get these in there! :)

  • nothing if you buy the set it comes with all you need and you just take it to a shop and have them put them in for 50 bucks.

  • I am getting an Ibanez RG7321 for Christmas from guitar center. The sound is a little bit muddy, and I'm thinking that's from the old, used, rusty strings. Do I need to get different pickups, or just change strings?

  • Im so glad they made the passive sized actives to but in my Ibaenz RG7321

  • So theres no problem with replacing emgs with blackouts? Just take out emgs and drop blackouts straight in?

  • yes.

  • are you for real if i buy a guitar with emgs and want the blackouts i just take out the emgs and pop in the balckouts with out any soldering and stuff??????

  • @mario4526 well emgs and blackouts are similar in style and shape so....ya i guess there wouldnt be anya that shit

  • @mario4526 you will need sodering stuff, just you wont need to replace any wires,

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks you guys,

I'll buy the EMG 81/60 set first 'coz I guess I gotta' try them out sometime.

    Thanks again.

  • I'm liking this.

The second pickups he was talking about... are they good for rhythm? I'm thinking of buying EMG 81 / 60s

  • buy blackouts they are better trust me i have them and i used to have the EMGS

  • hahahaah I like he keeps saying other active systems, shouldn't he just say EMG.

  • chyeaa lol he like almost slipped and said that like 10 times

  • @breakfastcrew I thought exactly the same thing - just say EMG...we all know what you're talking about!

  • @breakfastcrew there is other brands of pickups that are active like the black bettys from rockfeild pickups

  • @breakfastcrew lawsuits my friend

  • @breakfastcrew he dosent want to give free press to EMG

  • is it just me or does that guy seem like Shia LaBeouf in the future? lol if he wasnt such a pickup guy

  • lol its his dad

  • I got the Blackouts in my Gibson Explorer, Seymour Duncan 4 Life!

  • Also...about the high sensitivity, I think I can dig the extra klink ^_~

  • Probably a little late to say, but blackouts are meant to fit in a guitar that is precut for active or passive pickup slots

  • To me that sounds like a bad thing. I don't want to put Blackouts in my 7 then have to cover it in tape and foam.

  • Is have a blackout 2 for the bridge, but whit the jumper its a bit noisy, but has a very strong tone, whitout the jumper the tone is barely the same whitout the noise, It's a great pickup

  • Does anyone have a soundbite of the Blackout Single?!

Can;t find one anywhere and I've no idea what they sound like!

  • Are the Blackouts split-able?

  • 4:38 He almost said EMG, lol.

  • no.

  • Actually he didn't, lol!

  • lmao

  • Can the 7 string phase one Blackouts be coil tapped?

  • Why would you want to coil tap them? They'll sound like crap, weren't designed for that kinda thing.

  • coil tapping gives a more strat sound which is nice when playing blues. I like have a guitar with the versatility to move from metal to blues to classic rock.

  • I KNOW what coil tapping produces.

My point is, Blackouts weren't designed for that kind of stuff.

There are the new Blackout single coils anyway.

  • are the blackouts ahb1 the same thing as the blackouts metal

  • no, the blackout metal has more gain

  • thank you

  • is it possible to do the 18v mod on the blackouts ?

  • how much do the smaller 7 string ones cost for a pair?

  • I'm thinking about getting these instead of EMG's

  • Just about the smartest thing you can do. Blackouts are so much better than EMG's.

  • I regret spending as much as I did on my EMG 81/85 combo. I really dig the SH-6 sound though. Dimarzio Evo's have a sweet sound too.

  • X series Emgs are more senstive to pick attack. Less gain versions of orginals

  • the x series isnt buyable yet

  • they barely even have a prototype xD

hay but seriously! My warlock needs new pickups and IDK what to get? I mean the 81/85 combo from EMG sounds good and all my favorite guitarists use them =P

They call the blackouts the EMG killers but I think they sound like shit! (on youtube) I want to see/hear them in person haha. If i go with the blackouts, are the blackout metals better?

  • if u wanna put two blackout metals into the guitar, it will sound like shit cause its a bridge pickup. it depends on how versitaitle u want the guitar. u chan also put one blackout metal into it if u only want to play metal. but emgs 81/85 is better if want to play clean sounds to

  • oh ok thx! I don't play clean...at all xD

    Im a metal guy =]

What about one blackout metal in the bridge then but the what do I put in the neck? a regular metal? and how much does a blackout/metal cost? I have a BC. Rich warlock and I want to get rid of the BC rich pickusps but idk if I should get EMGs of Duncans =P

  • u can put the neck pu out of the guitar with one blackout metal and leave it like this. malcom young did the same thing with his guitar

  • Ya? kool! thx man! but what would compliment a blackout metal?

  • Are the regular Blackouts coil split-able? (sorry for lack of better wording)

  • The difference is negligible IMO. I prefer EMGs, and they recently released the X series active pickups...81X, 85X etc.

  • wut is the diffrents from the x series from just the normal ones?

  • More headroom and midrange, more natural sounding basically.

  • what is the meaning of PAF?

  • Patent Applied For

  • thank you very much.i appreciate your help! rock on!

  • @astigitara it's the name of those old 50's humbucker pickups from old gibson les pauls like what Jimmy Page used.

  • i want an ibanez fireman with those p-rails! i think that would be awsome!

  • For christ's sake, just say "EMG". Enough with the snarky "that other active pickup company".

  • yeah, and that could cause a defamation suit if they don't have permission to speak of EMG's on Television.

  • Haha, dang this whole video. Everybody knows he's referring to EMG when he says "other active pickups"

  • haha yah emg knows too, same with dimarzio when they introduced the d activators

  • You drifted of the subject to the point where you're not even accurately following the conversation.

Seriously tho', go try to pick a fight with someone else, grumpy pants.

  • thats the schecter blackjack c-7 atx! i already have seen this video for some time ago, but later i get intrested in this guitar... now i like this video^^

  • would a blackout AHB2, same as blackout metal i believe, be a good choice to put into a b.c.rich warlock? im just worried tht maybe it wont fit or really nething else

  • Alright, check it out, Im getting a Fat Strat, but i want to upgrade the pickups. I want s Seymour Duncan Blackout Single in the neck posistion, what would sound good in the bridge humcuker for like, rhythms and stuff? Anyone?

  • Depends on what your playing. If its metal then YES!!!! you should love it!

  • My god, Hes fat

  • sd alt 8 pick ups they are hot roded and have really shril highs and really low lows they go great with a blackout metal:)

  • what neck pickup goes very well with a Blackout Metal??

  • another blackout metal but set to the lower gain mode, or jus a regular blackout neck

  • that does

  • are those black covers permanent or can you replace them with the chrome or nickel covers from a gibson?

  • there not covers.. thts just wat they look like normally.. or at least if there covers they dont come off that i know of. The emg ones dont anyway

  • It's the body of the internals, so the black cover is like the case of the pickup and it's permanently sealed

  • If you're asking about the Blackouts, then yes they're permanent, and epoxy potted. If you're asking about the P-Rails, they have tops on them that encompass the coil and lock them together. Those tops are currently available in black only, and because the P90 coil is packed with so much wire, it's not conducive to putting a metal cover of any kind. But there could be another color or two available in the future.

  • Almost 10 minutes of brochure-talk but no playing?

  • Ha! Yeah that's NAMM for you. The NAMM police keep you pretty quiet, and as you can see in some of the other videos, the "sound demos" are basically Joe aiming the mic toward the amp :) So yeah, NAMM is basically brochure-talk.LOL

  • i was reading on the seymour duncan site and it said that the metal one only fits in the bridge position. should i just get the regular blackout for the neck position cuz the AHB-2 is so fucking brutal

  • na, get a emg 60. Has clearer cleans, but the SD blackout metal is way better than a emg

  • p-rails!!! sweet!!

i love the sound of p90s but i also love a humbucker. this is perfect for me

  • these things would fit in to an ibanez s series?

  • i love how he avoids mentioning EMGs haha.

and yeah. seymour duncan probably want to retain the brand image of having a 'traditional' sound with no battery boost or other 'additives', but to realistically continue from a business view, it was necessary to take market share. it's just the way the world turns i guess. and if they do a better job than EMG, then great. but for now, untill i have a reason to, i'm stikking to my trust 81 and 60

  • I can understand your hesitance. I was hesitant too. But honestly, since I purchased my first pair of Blackouts (originals), I haven't even considered EMG. They just don't sound right to me anymore. Blackouts have all the body, crunch, and harmonics of an EMG, while still feeling passive and "real", as opposed to brittle and digital. Seriously, these things make any set up sound utterly and positively metal. And even with all that, they roll off nice and clean.

  • Have you compared the Blackouts with EMGs that have been modded to 18v?

I have to wonder if the 18v mod to the EMGs puts them more into the Blackout "passive feel" you describe.

  • I haven't. I've heard of this mod, but I would have to assume that simply giving an EMG more "juice", as it were, would not help it's balance issues, and would make the "digital" side of the active pickup even more distinct. More output, that's for sure, but the cons to me should out weight the pros with that setup. The noise level would be awful, I would suspect. I have heard EMGs with the "Afterburner" installed, and though it was neat, it was hard to control, and there was a ton of noise.

  • Well then you need to do a bit more research,my friend...

The 18v mod actually *decreases* the serility and 'digital' feel, particularly on the cleans. It adds slightly more headroom to avoid the harsh clipping some do not like and it makes the EMG more "organic" sounding (for lack of a better term)

Seriously, research it yourself. I think there may even be some 9v vs. 18v EMG demos right here on Youtube.

  • I flat told you I had no experience with it. If you already knew, then why did you ask my opinion? Such a quick response, did someone ask when they didn't need to ask, perhaps? And for what reason, to be a jerk?

  • And you can recite the adverts if you want, but if I were you, I wouldn't rely on a video alone. I'd go out and find one, and give it a shot myself through a setup similar to my rig. I personally still don't see how simply giving the same pickup more voltage would do anything but increase it's issues, but I'll give it a listen.

  • I have done the 18v mod, to all of my EMG equipped Guitars.

That's why I earlier gave you the following informed opinion:

"The 18v mod actually *decreases* the serility and 'digital' feel, particularly on the cleans. It adds slightly more headroom to avoid the harsh clipping some do not like and it makes the EMG more "organic" sounding (for lack of a better term)"

  • Which only brings me to my first point. Why state it as if you were asking my opinion? "I have to wonder if the 18v mod to the EMGs puts them more into the Blackout "passive feel" you describe." Why not say: "You should try the 18v mod." And the whole "more research" comment makes you sound like an ass.

  • I asked if you had A/B'd the 18vEMG to the blackout. You basically said: "No but the 18v can only suck worse than the 9v"(meaning still no comparison to the blackouts)Then,I offered that you research it b/c that's not the case....the 18vEMG doesn't suck at all, it is better than the 9v.

But it still doesn't tell us if the 18v compares to the Blackout, only that the 18v is better than the 9v.

The only "ass" inferences being drawn here are due to your poor reading comprehension skills.

    Typical..

  • No, not being a jerk at all.....sorry you feel that way.

    Are you wearing cactus underwear?

    You said:

"but I would have to assume that simply giving an EMG more "juice", as it were, would not help it's balance issues, and would make the "digital" side of the active pickup even more distinct."

To which I responded that you should do a bit more research on the subject because the opposite seems to be true.

Nothing jerk-wad about it at all.

  • I want to hear a EMG next to a Blackout on the same amp and same distortion, no difference, a fair rating.

Im not rich so when I want to buy a SD blackout I want to be sure its worth it, cuz im quite happy with my EMGs.

  • yeah thats how i feel, however i've read so much to support the blackouts, i highly doubt we could be let down

  • Live Wire

  • They should quit calling the competitor's actives "old"... it just reminds people that it took them 30 years to put out what the others have offered all along.

The P-Rail is a pretty awesome idea, though.
