Actually, it doesn't look to be a problem to me. It allows you to be able to create a portrait crop from a landscape photo and vice versa. This is something I've been searching to do a while now, so thank you for this. But, like jagdude99 said, click the lock on the right side to lock the aspect ratio.
@eketelon well it is no longer a problem in Lightroom 3 Beta 2 - This problem was only present in the Beta 1.
And it was to show the developers how the problem occured, I know that i could've locked it down - But i normally use shift to retain my ratio - That way I can quickly switch between a fixed ratio or a free ratio

Click the lock icon to lock the aspect ratio, then you don't need to hold shift.
