The difference is only in the way they are categorized in your mind according to what your culture uses them for. In Western culture dogs and cats are much more useful alive than dead, unlike cows and pigs, because dogs would hunt and guard houses while cats would kill pests. In other cultures they have no use other than sustenance. Do you understand?
