Sorry posted in wrong spot. Wonder where I am in Hunter's Civic Biology? Read that yet? It is social Darwinism that makes the religious fearful of evolutionary theories, as well as the fact it can't be agreed upon to be tested to ultimately unilaterally bi-partisan conclusion with consistency. P. 450 Mentor Ed. Origin of Species. If you are still open-minded Read: How did we get here? by Evolution or Creation (Ch. 1-15-16 only) get it next time Jehovah's Witnesses Knock. It was interesting.
(Darwin believed intelligent design)Darwin pointed it out there had to be an intelligent designer. I view Theories as hypothesis's testing out to be true. Things that test out the same over again are factual science- the rest is speculation-not proven fact
Not all scientists can agree on evolution. Can't test, so ideas are waiting to be tested to an agreement. I side with Darwin, So I feel both should be taught: Theory Evolution & Theory Creation
dmar, in case you're not joking, perhaps i should point out that theists have been attacking "darwinians" as satans spawn for 150 years, and for centuries earlier slaughtering atheists and theists of different religions. and now that they know it's game over, they're all like, "hey ofcorse evolution is real... why should we fight ? science and god are so compatible".
I think you're more hopeful and optimistic about the fight between science and religion than is warranted. I would say that the end of the game (game over as you call it) is still a couple centuries away. God is still very much alive in the hearts of people. The belief that evolution is a sound theory, and atheism are both still minority viewpoints.
dmar, at least you don't subscribe to the new theist marketing approach that science and theism are compatible. you say, "The belief that evolution is a sound theory, and atheism are both still minority viewpoints." generally that's only true of illiterate and/or uneducated peolpe in countries with week or nonexistent institutions of democracy. in western democracies [except US, for now] it's game over. which is why eg...
...in 1996 Pope John Paul II said, "Today, almost half a century after the publication of the encyclical [pope pius XII "humani generis" 1950], new knowledge has led to the recognition of the theory of evolution as more than a hypothesis... The convergence, neither sought nor fabricated, of the results of work that was conducted independently is in itself a significant argument in favor of this theory."
dude, when the head nutter of the fuckin catholics, says evolution is real... game over.
nice recommendation :) by the way, I read a lot Douglas Addams, it's fun, it's crazy, but there's a cool metaphor behind the stories, about human behaviour and how stupid things are sometimes, heard about it?
I love it! I have subscribed because I am gonna read this stuff, and I am a Baptist Pastor. Notice when he mentioned one of the books he said, "GOD, I love this book!" Wow! Some atheist!
For some reason, I couldn't get into the Selfish Gene. Guess I am not used to how much setup Dawkins uses. I love reading Sagan. He keeps it entertaining and informative at the same time.
Off the subject of evolution, but on the subject of atheism, have you read anything from Sam Harris? "The end of Faith" and "Letter to a Christian Nation"
Haven't you ever listened what Stephen Colbert says about books...we shouldn't trust them. Now put all of those books full of lies and hate away and just trust what your gut is telling you.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm half-way through The God Delusion now and finding it really interesting. I hope everyone also has the chance to see Richard Dawkin's accompanying tv programme 'The Root of all Evil'. I think there's clips on youtube. I watched it on Channel 4 about a year or so ago now. Brilliant stuff. And like another poster said I wish I had a silver shiny copy like yours! lol :)
Haha, the silver cover IS pretty nifty! I was fortunate enough to see The "Root of all Evil" here on youtube, although I think the vids might have gotten taken down.
I haven't read it, but from what I've heard I'm uneasy about it. It may well be an entertaining book, but I fear that people will mistake the book for an accurate depiction of Charles Darwin (much as people have assumed The Da Vinci Code to be absolutely true) and it will end up slandering a great scientist.
"Darwin's Dangerous Idea" is my favorite too. And Shermer is super. I've recieved email from Shermer. I just have to brag about that. I was thrilled. Everyone should read Skeptic Magazine.
Absolutely! There are a few vids of him on youtube that are pretty cool. Actually, believe it or not I haven't read any Sagan yet...and for that I am ashamed. :(
I'll second 'the demon haunted world', it's TGD kicked up a notch on the merits of skepticism. ^^ I've got three of those books. ^^ TGD, the ancestors tale and T. canyon; all great books.
I was about to post something about Sagan..then I noticed someone else already had. The Demon Haunted World is probably the greatest book on science/ skepticism I've read. It would be so great to see Sagan and Dawkins as sort of an asskicking atheistic tag team.
In the blue corner we have the fantastic asskicking duo of Sagan and Dawkins!!! In the red corner we have Jesus, Krishna, Odin, Zeus, TheToothFairy, and Santa Clause. Who will win? (my moneys on S & D)
Totally, Shermer is pretty freakin' cool. I saw video a debate between him and Kent Hovind...it was stupid. While Shermer was bringing up actual evidence and trying to have intelligent debate, Kent was just smooth talking the audience and saying "evolution is a lie, evolution is a lie, blah blah blah." Poor Mike had to endure that nonsense.
So you were the one who posted a vid response! I couldn't find it. (its all set to automatic because I fucked up and accidently removed one of xenthrics responses to me on my last account.) It doesn't tell me who sent the video, or what video it was responding to. Anyways, Excellent book suggestions!
The God Delusion - Own it and have read it. Great book. Mine is the British version thought. Not as shiny :-(. Selfish Gene also have that :-D. Also have the blind watchmaker :-D. Have "Why Darwin Matters" Great book. I have intelligent thought also :-D. Have the ancestors tale :-D Hardback version dam u.
The Ancestor's Tale is truly a must read. I am unable to put the book down. Everyone - read it ASAP.
