@NiHuWi That's not what i said. Nice strawman though. In fact, i would state it in reverse. It's not that Wittgenstein so much "ended philosophy" as he showed why it never started to begin with. Only with a Wittgensteinian understanding of language can anything like philosophy be said to have begun. Thus, Wittgenstein didn't end philosophy, he gave birth to it---the correct way to do it.
@Wittgensteinism@Wittgensteinism As a good Wittgensteinian, you should understand that my previous statement was not a strawman argument, but part of a particular language game in which statements like "Wittgenstein is the end all of philosophy" does not mean that Wittgenstein was the end of philosophy but, rather, can be understood as having a similar meaning to your claim "Wittgenstein was the only real philosopher".
PS: Chomsky's work has cast Wittgenstein's theory of language into doubt.
why no to Nietzsche(hes was a fucking great mind along with Schopenhauer) and yes to that idiot Kant for example?.... i read about kant ... HES AN IDIOT !!!
nietzsche wasnt a propa philosopher he is certainly a leading figure in academics i just dont agree with everything about him i dont like the way university relativist post modern dummies have taken him completley
I think he's refusing to do a video on Nietzsche because the guy wasn't really a philosopher. Certainly not a good one, at any rate. Old Fred is actually a really pathetic figure once you start to learn about him. He was denied a career in the military because of his weak health and spent the rest of his life idealizing to the extreme the life of a soldier. He divided everything into masculine and feminine and vilified the feminine. Also he wasn't a nihilist, quite the opposite in fact.
For those of you who do not understand this video Nietzsche didn't want society to have expectations you all want him to do this video you set an expectation so when he refused he broke off of society's expectations the best way I can explain it. Xp
@jck7111 Conversely, while most of the other philosophers have at least a central motif,
concept, thesis that can be neatly summarized, if not completely certainly defined-Nietzsche being a philologist and neophyte psychologist (at least in his own estimation) traversed such a broad swath of areas it is not possible to do this-he is also one of the least 'liked' or understood thinkers of Philosophy -very few people have satisfactorily studied his work...
@jck7111 How is it that I spend hours reading about Philosophy an I miss these really central doctrines? Seriously after reading so much about Nietzsche all I got was the Will To Power and some mentions of a superman theory.
Nietzsche spoke predominantly in aphorisms and was more of a classicist who made observations than a philosopher. There are much better wankers out there to worship. :P
why should he be treated like this. was there nothing of value in his entire work. or you just hate him for his big ego, this video proves that you have even a bigger ego. or you cannot think beyond 2+2=4. logic??
why should he be treated like this. was there nothing of value in his entire work. or you just hate him for his big ego, this video proves that you have even a bigger ego. or you cannot think beyond 2+2=4. logic??
Galileo said: "All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them." We need to start working together to discover the truths of life that we all have in common. This is how we can unite and focus on our essential similarities instead of our dividing differences. Search for "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then click "The Present" to open it. What it says will turn this world right-side up if it reaches enough people.
By the way Nietzsche doesn't sound suspect to me, I don't understand why people would dislike him. A pessimist is detestable but I find this pleasant because they are happy while wet in the rain, that's a good thing. If you are a realist you wouldn't say nasty things, you're thinking of a pessimist. Maybe Nietzsche was a materialist, this is a stupid philosophy, I never thought it was rational. I ignore philosophies like that, that's just a paranoid fantasy (just an opinion).
Woo hoo! I get the third top row! I was starting to perhaps want to actually follow Nietzsche, man! I call it "the art of the truth", sounds wonderful, the truth is a nice thing to know, I see no problem with the actual truth, I see it that Nietzsche wasn't hurtful, he was being truthful, it's nice to know the truth, it's not a bad thing, it is actually nice to know you should have a war-free society but it wouldn't be nice to find out anything about trouble, if Nietzsche was bad then no no no!
there isn't a need for nietzsche when most of his work has already been bastardized (and will continue to be bastardized) by every college-aged, radical atheist, pseudo-intellectual hipster around the globe
I once read from a book on 100 essential philosophers: "The man of power to helps the weak, but not, or almost not out of pity, but is prompoted by an urge which is begotten by the excess of power".
What's really rather pathetic is how many people think this was implicitly a description of his philosophy... rather than just denying the audience for the sake of the satisfaction. While that denial might itself be argued for, it's still bullshit.
Another case of a bunch of people who haven't read a damned thing, but think they know a philosopher perfectly.
@Kobywan007 Who says you have to read anything to know philosophy? It is, after all, the love of knowledge so any person who gains knowledge and enjoys doing so would thus be a philosopher by such a definition.
As a philosopher, both in your defined category, and in academic pursuit... I agree. What I take issue with are those who claim to have a proper insight into the works of another, without having actually read (Read as in Read, not as in, "skimmed") anything of that thinker.

@Paddydhistorian Nietzsche believed philosophy had become too hyperintellectualized, and too Apollonian (instead of Dionysian) in character. He makes some brilliant suggestions, but he refused to 'do philosophy' like most philosophers, so he often refused to elaborate on or clarify his views, and disdained the normal practices of philosophy. Given his views on attaining ubermensch-hood and keeping in touch with our primal natures, it's probably too crude to simply call him a nihilist.
@WouldbeSage Yes, I'm sure you're right. My understanding of philosophy (apart from some political theorists) is very minimal. Guess I'll stick to my field.
