my brother has this one.. top looks like sandpaper by now, glossy display is horrible, the keyboard is sooo small that you constantly have to correct stuff cause you hit multiple keys at once, the touchpad is tiny and unresponsive (and your fingertips stick to it once it wore down a bit (texture gone)), and of course, the webcam is the first thing that breaks (VERY common problem, it just disappears as if it's unplugged. not in the device manager.. just gone..).
I bought it from japan and everything is in Chinese, I cant read chinese how can I actually change the language totally when every option is in chinese? can u help me? PLZ ... and reinstally windows XP didnt work :( PLZ give me the solution...PLZZZzzz
i guess you need to ask someone who can read chinese but check the tastbar, there should be a language change menu on the bottom right. Well, at least when you got it with Windows XP.
Hi friend. Do you think that I can use this notebook in my office, under a hard work at long time on day?? I'm going to connect a 15" lcd screen and USB keyboard. Thanks for your comments.
with the setup you mentioned.. YES! The default keyboard is even too small for me but for everything office related and websurfing this system is just fine
This review convinced me to get the dell inspiron mini 9. It has a much nicer ubuntu interface than the Toshiba. It seems faster on boot than the toshiba, but slower than the default Xandros on my eee 701. The eyecandy is worth it, though
The Dell keyboard concept is smart, except that the F11 and F12 do not exist (F11 is needed: fullscreen firefox), the right shift key is awkwardly placed, and the keyboards are known to have hardware issues (including mine, replacement keyboard is on its way).
I already have many Toshiba, and recently I failed to buy that Samsung NC10 10" netbook, but I reckon I'd prefer the way Toshiba reuse the arrow keys on its netbooks for PgUp, PgDn, Home and End. So I'll wait for next year's Toshiba 10" or 11" netbook with a 6-cell battery.
That was a pretty long start-up time... Also hate the shrunken right shift key, I guess you're alright if you use the left shift key instead. But like most Toshiba computers, it's far too glossy then it needs to be...
Amazing Review! Every detail i was looking for is showed here. From external specs To real usage test (opening, typing, holding on). Congratulations! I would like to see your review of HP Mini Note 2133 and compare with this Toshiba, just like you do it here with Dell and Asus
Here's a first impression: the right shift key is sitting in the wrong spot. When people that can type (unlike the hunt-and-peggers), you expect the right shift key within immediate reach of your right pinky finger. But it's too far to the right. Why on why did they fuck up on this? Just like the Asus 1000.
Believe it or not, I can touch type on the Asus 701.
Unfortunately the netbooks with a fucked up keyboard I can't use.
i think u didnt just focus on the NB100 you showed us other netbooks in my oppinion in think the toshiba NB100 beats the samaung that the other laptop the keyboard is really small but that is a good thing because its easier and compact.

so funny, i thought that with ubuntu it would boot faster, but a acer one with win 7 is faster

pleas note: don't blame the hardware for the software...or even vice versa
plus this way before win7 came out
2nd all win7 netbooks have 1gb ram
lm3233 2 years ago
win7 is much newer than this hardware or version of ubuntu
ubuntu 9.10 or even 10.04 are much faster
win7 is great and all.....but, contrary to propaganda, its still slower than ubuntu
btw...we are talking about the same brand...right?

Another question, can you use an external 250 Gb HDD with this Netbook?
german416 2 years ago
of course
minipcpro 2 years ago
It's good to see a netbook coming with a decent Linux distro for a change, instead of the usual POS Linpus.Lite.
mukatuna 2 years ago
I've run Windows 7 RC on a similar specced netbook, and its just fine.
Vista is too much of a resource hog to run effectively on a 1GB Atom netbook IMO. Its bad enough when run on low RAM Celeron machines.
mukatuna 2 years ago
I have a question, can you run Vista or Windows 7 on this netbook?.

See my reply to toml8886 about Windows Vista and 7 on netbooks.

obbytoo 2 years ago
stay with the 901!
minipcpro 2 years ago
That's my plan, since overall functionality, speed (ssd) and battery life is >> nb100 :)
But I'm a bit annoyed with the 901's greasy surface and non-wsvga screen.
obbytoo 2 years ago
i mean there is newness to come. If you wanna stay with 8.9inch you might even wanna take a look at the Eee PC T91 Netvertible

How about the keyboard size? I saw Toshiba NB100 in person, and it really has too small keyboard for me ...
... did anyone try Lenovo S10? Because I'm thinking of buying it, but I saw that some people are also saying that the keyboard is (too)small.
But OK, it's 85 % of full one, so I guess it's not that bad as this Toshiba :S
