pt cruiser, silverado ss and the smart car are just insanely beatiful, its the peak of automotive design, they will go as the most beautiful cars in the hall of fame, they are not plasticky or low budged designed such as the mclaren f1 or the aventador or in my opinion the most ugly car ever made the one 77...
Really carbon fiber is resistant to tension, but not so much to impact, remember this is graphite. Kevlar, UHMWPE, polycarbonate are better to impact due to its great capacity of deformation, that's why you see body armors made of titanium, fiber glass, GLARE, aluminium, cobalt-Steel, cermets and kevlar but not of carbon fiber. There is not magic material, well carbon nanotubes but that is for the future, maybe 2030.
@hvf26 well, it's a bit old, but this SSR used to be a great looking car. It was popular at first, but just like the PT Cruiser and the Beetle, lost its appeal.
However, the SSR came standard with an LS Series V8. So don't think just because it's ugly that it's slow.
Carbon is lighter but the cost as also much higher. Carbon wont beak as easily as fiberglass but it will defiantly break if you hit something hard enough. This is illustrated every time an F1 or Champ Car crashes because their wings and bodywork are 100% carbon fiber. Adding about 10% Kevlar helps but it also adds cost.
@epistte I guess that answers my question because I know If one were to run a fiberglass car into a tree they would be screwed. I bet they would save lives using carbon fiber as apposed to fiberglass. I am building a sport go kart as a project and I am looking into using carbon fiber or fiberglass. I am considering the carbon fiber now due to it's strength but the cost may be a big factor. Thanks for your information.
@LostTwillville Running a carbon fiber car into a tree would probably be as disastrous as running a fiberglass one because what makes a car safer on a collision is how much energy it can dissipate. Metallic materials can dissipate much more energy through plastic deformation than carbon fiper or fiberglass so, metal is still safer if no specific changes are made to the parts design when using carbon fiber...
@guarita Carbon parts with proper design parameters will break away and absorb the impact where steel or other metals will transfer the energy to the driver. There is a reason why race cars are built with a carbon monocoque to protect the driver, while the rest of the parts break away upon impact.
you maye never touch it with your skin, because sweat, grease, etc. makes it bad! very good product, but it dies in contact with oil, even very very little, like on your hands!
can't help but think, this could be done easier... don't know how... just a gut feeling...

Carbon fiber is as strong as steel at same volume, the difference is that steel is 5 times heavier.at these same volumes.

The SSR gets such a bad rep. It was a specialty vehicle. But that one... yes ugly. LOL and real carbon fiber is a total waste on it.

@LostTwillville Carbon fiber is far stronger than steel but it is slightly impact sensative unless it is interwoven with kevlar.
