What! No end zone celebration? What the hell is the matter with Charlie Smith? Why isn't he promoting himself? Even the guy who throws the ball into the stands is just reacting to the joy of the moment not promoting himself.
@neneshubby ---that is an era long gone, my friend. Two exciting nailbiting games between these teams in a month---each with an unlikely and unpredictable finish. Charley Smith involved in both key plays. And then topped off by Jets winning Super Bowl. Kind of typified the years 1968 and 1969 were
I think the only reason this survived is because NBC showed it on the Huntley Brinkley Report the next night. A B/W video of that segment is on here...somewhere.
The NFL is starting to get crazy with copyright infringement. They had one of my other videos removed (1968 AFL Championship "Jets Stop Raiders"). I may have to take this down.

@LSpear76RCN uh DOAK EWING may be the other asshole who had it removed! The reason that Smith was so wide open on that pass was that Jets regular safety,Jim Hudson, was ejected from the game earlier. His backup,Mike D'Amato ,was badly beaten on the play.
@snubnosepitbull The game was still showing in the Pacific and Mountain time zones. The Central and Eastern time zones were left the game at 6:00 and 7:00pm, respectively, for Heidi.
@wtfman591 Belichick coach of year, Brady MVP and they stunk in the playoffs. WHY? NO CHEATING this year dude. Like I said, since they got caught cheating, they haven't won anything. Only a Pat's ass kisser like you can't seem to grasp reality.
Did any of you notice 1:57 through 2:13? The Raiders are kicking off after a penalty assessed after the extra point. The ball is on the Jet 45 and the Raiders are kicking the ball into the stands. Then the Jets get the ball at the 20 yard line. I never laughed so hard in my life!
I was at this game, sitting in the upper 3rd deck nosebleeders. This video is all that's left of the moment, and it can't possibly reflect the INSANITY and the NOISE in that during that last minute in the Oakland Coliseum. My dad kept on saying before the last kcickoff, "Something's gonna happen!, something's gonna happen!, something's gonna happen!" I actually think that lots of silver and black fans just KNEW we were going to win, just like dad did.
The Oakland Raiders needs a good QB and 2 or 3 more good players on Defense and they would be better than they are now. Let's face it Gradkowski, Kyle Boller and Jason Cambell are NOT good QBs.
They should make a trade maybe get Donovan McNabb , Kevin Kolb, Josh Johnson, Tony Pike, Dan Lefevour, Rudy Carpenter, or Kellen Clemens.
This was the game in fact that afterwards caused the NFL the implement the rule that the game be required to be broadcast in its entirety to the home markets of the teams playing.
It does need to be remembered back then, however, the FCC was much more stringent on a regulation that required the 7:00-8:00 PM ET/PT hour to be reserved for Children's and/or news/information programming on Sundays. That's a big reason why the networks for years were so reluctant to go past 7:00 PM ET.
@Wallyhorse The FCC rules on children's or news programming on Sundays between 7 and 8 P.M. Eastern/Pacific time didn't get implemented until 1975.
Between 1971 and 1975, the FCC barred networks from feeding affiliates more than three hours of programs between 7 and 11 ET/PT. In 1975, the rules were amended to allow four hours of network feed on Sundays, if the 7-8 T/PT hour were kid stuff or informational programming.
with todays rules I think they would have said his knee was down on the kickoff fumble, and why was Joe not in the game at the end? it was Babe Parelli
The Hedi bowl is the best example of why if there extended the shows are pushed back like now and how Undercover boss isn't startin at 9 PM exactly all the time unless theres no 4:15 game for the AFC ( at least ) .
There used to be not as many commercials The NFL can afford it. I would make it legal to start the next show if it goes more than 15 minutes long. It would supersede any contracts with the NFL It may speed the game up. The NFL is just greedy about it. Football used not to be about commercials.
I was reminded of this game when ABC refused to broadcast the USC-Oregon game this weekend whie it was showing the godawful Minnesota-Ohio State game, until halfway into the 4th quarter. Somebody should get fired fo this stuff.
@gamelvr1 I'm talking about the Super bowl on February 1, 2004 between the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers. This game will go down in Infamy not because of the Game, but because of its Halftime Show with Janet Jackson and the Debut of three Commercials for "ED" Prescription Pills and an "Attack Ad" aimed at then-President Bush. CBS and its Affiliates were Swamped with Phone Calls from Irate Viewers because of these Commercials and MS Jackson's "Wardrobe Malfunction".
@Borntocoast That's technically the 2003 superbowl since it was for the 2003 season. I'm well aware of the janet jacson incident, I have no recollection of the commercials that you're referring to. For future reference, so there's NO dispute over what year, just say what superbowl # it was. Contrary to some public belief it's recognized by the season the postseason is for.
@resdsox1 C'mon dude......Belichick sucked as a coach in Cleveland and Brady was average at best at Michigan. They get together and all of a sudden they're world beaters? Use your noggin dude. They're cheating up the ying yang.
Now, the games last way too long. We need more Heidi games! Maybe they will stop showing too many commercials. The games used to last no more than 3 hours TOPS. They can do it again if they wish.
@lambert581 ...No I didn't know till your post. He was my first AFL hero when we was with Houston Oilers way back when. Then he went to Oakland and they've been my team ever since.
I was 11 years old when I saw this great game. I realized some where in the third quarter something that made me very happy. The American Football League was going to win the Super Bowl that season. The Jets or the Raiders could beat any N.F.L. team. Both the Jets and Raiders had outstanding defenses that year, but had dissolved in this game. The N.F.L. would not be able to contain either offense. Before the season Dell Sports magazine predicted an A.F.L. victory. THEY WERE RIGHT ! SO WAS I.
Oh my God!!! I was 8, when this game was on. I remember slamming my fist on the floor when they cut to Heidi. And then later hearing the Raiders won. I am from Ohio but I still am a die-hard Raiders fan since 1967. This brought back some great memories. I really loved the AFL over the NFL, and Curt Cowdy. My dad and I would watch the NFL game on CBS at 1 pm, then watch the AFL game on NBC at 4pm. Thanks for airing this LSpear 76RCN.
But one month later, when these two teams were to again play each other in New York for the AFL Championship, there was definately no Heartbreak for the Jets.
This is very cool. Number 37 ( the guy who recovered the ball in the endzone). Is one of our substitutes at school. He remembers this game like it was yesterday. Look him up.
What a lot of people forget that this wasn't a nationally televised game. A lot of people outside of New York and maybe Los Angeles and other cities that didn't see the game didn't know what happened until they until it was reported.
Wow,took 41 years to see the end of the that game, and Curt Gowdy still sounded great, and Namath and the Jets would get the Raiders a couple of months later at Shea Stadium.

The reason this clip even exists is that on the West Coast, NBC did carry the game to conclusion.
Curt Gowdy did a quick sign-off, unaware the game had been cut-off in the East.
"Heidi" wouldn't be seen on the West Coast until 7 P.M. PST.
The game ended around 4:05 P.M. PST (7:05 EST).
In retrospect, NBC should have stayed with the game to conclusion; "Heidi" would only have started about five minutes late.
A small price to pay for the biggest game of the 1968 regular-season.
