  • Hi Melanie, what about "bureau" and "nee"....

Thank you for the lesson and greetings from germany :-)

  • @rainermb Great suggestions, thank you! 'Bureau' is another common word that I forgot sounded French! I hope you are enjoying life in Germany = ) Have a great weekend.

  • @masanorisky Yes! I didn't even think of the word 'mayonnaise,' so thank you for reminding me! It's such a common word that I forgot it sounded French = )

  • I spent a week in Barcelona, Spain and was asked by an American lady if I could translate the words "hacienda" and "sombrero" into Spanish. This is no joke it really happened.

I was quite surprised myself when I was looking for the "Supermercado" and was told I should look for the sign "Supermarket".

  • @MsSheila541 Both stories are really funny! I often wonder how many English words have been adopted into other languages. I know the French are very particular about not having any English words mixed into French!

  • Melanie, thanks for this great video. For the last few weeks I have done a lot of research too about foreign words which have been integrated into English. I was quite surprised how many French but a lot more German words are already used in especially American English.

  • @MsSheila541 It's quite possible that I could do a video for any western European language - I think we even have a few Scandinavian words mixed into English (I think because of the large numbers of immigrants to American & Canada, especially in the 1800s & 1900s)!
