  • i WANT TO MARRY THIS SONG

  • the bernard butle rproductions are much better than mick jones.

  • I still can't help but think that the spirit of Steve Marriot entered Pete when he was a teen, one of their best songs.

  • Delightfull indeed!

  • Listening to Petes vocals on this version sends shivers down my spine , pure poetry..

  • oooooooooooh carl's voiceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee @_@

  • what is the meaning of this song?

  • @itsnotgoodforme The term "death on the stairs" was used by Pete and Carl when discussing only making it to a halfway, mediocre stage in the music business. Carl often said he would go big or end up quitting, and obviously they made it.

  • @MonkmisterTLB It's also a phrase for people who dies from overdoses, and how an addiction is like a hate-love relationship.

  • This song may be not the best song, but in its sound it perfectly defines why love the libertines, and this version is just special.

  • DAMN B, THIS SHIT OFF DA HOOK!

  • Absolute classic by one of the best bands in the world!!

  • Sounds like Oasis or the AM.

  • @nashark1 get out

  • @nashark1 No.

  • Defs the best song by the Libertines, I enjoy this version of it immeasurably.

  • My favourite song of all time

  • I really can't express how much I love The Libertines.

  • @RobRussianSpy Nobody can, that's part of what makes them so special.

  • very delightfull version, indeed!

  • this one sounds like they might have actually used record studio instead of a Nokia 3310 to record it

  • this one sounds like they actually got a producer :P

  • @Smownage lol

  • @Smownage yes, thanks god the sound is better now ....

  • my god im in fuckin love with them

  • "From way far across the sea

    Came an eritrean maiden she

Had a one track mind and eyes for me

    Half blinded in the war

    With a pale young Anglican

Who said he'd help her all he can

Showed her Jesus and his little un-holy friend

She had no notion to please him

Just say 'ta-ra' and leave him behind"

  • Thar song makes me lough and cry at the same time, ha ha

  • very good song

  • fuckin love the libertines but this is prob me favourite tune

  • carl is laughting at 0:37 :D

  • is this the version on the best of album then? sounds farmiliar...and fucking genuis

  • Anyone else get strong Irish folk vibes from this song?

  • The guitar part is so hard! On the original there's so many variations of that one part!!!!

  • Petes got a huge dick, down to his ankles

  • Best version!

  • wats with the brit poppy damon albarn-esque backing "wooo" chorus?

  • i dont quite think you have a clue what your on bout. since when did blur sound like dis. its backin vocals

  • perfectionist!!!

  • this shit!!! thats why is so good XD

  • much the best version of this. i generally love all the bernard butler produced libs tracks. really wall-of-sound prod values

  • Fucking awesome

  • pleeaase kil me

  • libertines e foda brasil

  • love em'. The honest plagiarism of the odd bit of fine literature. The sound like nowt else. Pure heartbreak trickling into everything... The style. Not like Oasis or f***** Arctic Monkeys. Not like that ***t attall. They have songs about my life that Dylan just doesn't quite. well, I always get a little prejudice against Indie bands, but I could never deny The Libertines. I feel at one with those raucous young men and the tone they strike- what can i say.

Don't look back into the sun.

  • they sound like the fucking clash meets the jam meets modern english.... you think this is original its not i still HAVE LIBERTINE tatt'd across my arm

this individual sound is mick jones created

  • good mate

    seriously thats poetry

  • @theboymiles91 Indie is just a lame label anyway, a stereotype, this is passionate music what else needs to be said by haters, you either like it or you don't.

I love this band and this song is probably my favourite, you have good taste buddy, see through the hype.

  • @theboymiles91 arctic monkeys are legitimately good, despite being arrogant, haughty, ignorant assholes. and oasis is the same way, except only their first two albums

  • @theboymiles91 you are absolutely right!

  • this is the most brilliant comment I have ever come across on youtube. That is a backhanded compliment, but only praise intended. Well said sir.

  • @theboymiles91 hey now...

don't talk shit about the monkeys.

  • @theboymiles91 against indie bands ? What d'you fancy ? Lady Gaga rubbish, Katy Perry ?

  • Coolest song ever

  • i took far too much.. 'if you really need it, you just won't leave it behind'

  • tuuuuuuuneee

  • lets climb over the balcony.. you really neeeeed it, u just wont leave it behind, so baby please kill me,, oh baby dont kill me,,,,, just dont find out about yesterday.. just keeep it swweeet,,

  • The Libs are the best of 21st Century

  • best song

  • i like both versions, very much so aswell. i like the up the bracket version because its clean and kept together and all around beautiful, i also like this one because its raw and energetic and very much indie influenced, i like the ending on this better aswell.

  • Turns you into stone

  • yeh!

  • love this song

  • raw is good

  • I prefer the album version but I still love this version. Has to be my Favourite Libertines song.

  • this is the best version by far sounds more rougher round the edges if that makes sense lol

  • I dig this version but I prefer the strength of the guitar intro and what I really prefer is the "aaahhh" instead of the "ooooh" at the end.

    Take care

Man, your ratings are sky high these days.

  • yeah in the album version the intro is way too quiet....but i prefer carl's and pete's voices

  • @frenchielcfc Don't worry it makes sense.

  • I prefer the album version although I love this. The album one is more startling and clean. This one has too many cutesy Brit rock elements from Bernard Butler. The Mick Jones production is crisp and relies on Carl's incredible guitar talents and Pete's smooth crooning.

  • Hey Man where is that version? I just prefer Mick Jones because he takes the Libs in a rock and roll rather than Indie direction.

  • you can hear some real soul comin out of these guys voices

  • see i dont like this version that much. but im a creature of habit and only listen to the album version :)

  • Youre a human being. Were all creatures of habit... ;P

  • this is about twice as good as the album version, and the album version is awesome.

  • my favorite song of all time

  • just say turrar

  • reunite. now.

  • what a lovely version of this remarkably beautiful song! why can´t it be downloaded??

  • theres these places, outside the house called 'shops',and in these shops they sell a variety of things, one shop called a 'music shop' sells cd's,theyeve got one called up the bracket, about £11,prob the most influential album since definately maybe, and theres pictures on the inside woooooh ;) x

  • erm this version isnt on up ther bracket its on the best of...

  • no versions really the same!theres loads of recordings of this song, everywhere!!n and each one is individual to its self,a moment captured be it in a recording studio or gig....what ya wanna have em all!?download away ????

  • ok but this person asked for this version and this version is on the best of

  • hahaha yes ur right,it is indeed..and all im suggesting is that instead of downloading it,go out of the house n buy it!or is that a foreign concept these days...if u want it on ur comp u put the cd in ,u get the album cover n art work...is all

  • I agree i prefer t o have a Cd then a downloaded album duno why.

  • its on the dlbits single. like the vid shows.

  • videos on dlbits single?

  • this song is a bside to dlbits single, and the video shows that. :)

  • I'm a Libertine, Pete and Carl said all you have to do is state it. :)!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the true sound of england. oasis aint all that. i await the death threats

  • im going to kill you

    just kidding, i agree

  • as doherty said himself: if Oasis is the sound of a council estate singing its heart out, then the Libertines sounded like someone just put in the rubbish chute at the back of the estate, trying to work out what day it is".[

  • I concur!

  • this!

  • Death on the stairs vs live forever

    who wins

  • hard one but it has to be live forever

  • She had no mind to please him

Just say 'ta-ra' and leave him behind

  • temaaaaaaaaaaaaaso !!!

  • AAHHHH! the libs make me love evry song of´em i listen, tHey´re jst awesome!!... ahh.. it´s a shame that the libertines no longer exist!

  • oh they do

  • good. great. awesome. excellent. perfect.

  • Its all about the way he delivers the line-'ive taken far too much to see or think or touch, whats real?im stranded on the streets that once paved my only way home' it just does it for me! Its just such a good song, i know its a bit dark if you look into it,but its just got so much going for it:Melody, great riff, great bass line and the dums are really loud. Not to mention all the great lines and words in it, ......and they both share the vocals. Its a good story if you read the words on paper.

  • ive always preferred the bernard butler version of this but the mick jones version of tell the king

  • Great song, although this version doesn't capture the intended feel ;p

  • this is the better version but t other i think is better suited to the sound of up the bracket.

  • this version is the better version. should of been on up the bracket but for some reason they chose the slow one!

  • I love this version, better than the original

  • I just think you can't really have a "delightful version" of a song called Death on the Stairs that's all

  • haha

  • It's a song about addiction, despair, and loneliness. Do you expect it to be delightful and cheerful, lol.

  • Okay teddy, thanks for that

  • nah not at all

  • Libertines are amazing.

  • I'm not too keen on this version, only because I don't think it fits the song.

  • Yah I agree. It's almost a bit too raw or something...this song sounds better more polished on the album

  • amazing version

  • fabulous, libertines are understimated by a lot of ppl. they were artistically better than the scum strokes

  • better but strokes are good too

  • how on earth are the strokes scum? the libertines wouldnt be here if it wasnt for the strokes, theyre both amazing bands.

  • Im a fan of the strokes, but the libs woulda beeen here, no matter what.

  • well they would have come around later as the strokes paved the way for all indie guitar music at the time because nothing in that genre was happening. the libertines were completely rejuvinated when the strokes came about. the libs also supported the strokes on tour.

  • True .... But The White Stripes were also major pioneers of the genre!!!

  • ye you're right.

  • Damn right I'm right ... sorry but I'm a huge Stripes fan, and Libertines too. I like The Strokes too alot.

  • wen was this recorded?

  • it was the b side to dlbits single release, so betweent he ttwo albusm i think

  • Everything the libs made was amazing, even the rerecorded stuff.

  • This is sacrilege if you ask me. The reason the Libertines are the Libertines is because the albums were recorded pretty much live under Mick Jones with little production at all. Gives them that dirty, raw sound. This version IMHO completely zaps them of their magic and pitches them closer to the rest of their peers.

So So So glad Bernard Butler didn't get near the first album which is easily their best work for the above reason.

  • listen to the album version then

  • this version is so much better

  • i prefer this version

  • I like this one a tiny bit more because it exemplifies the kind of sand-box indie feel of The Libs. It sounds a bit less studio produced, in a good way.

  • classy better than origional which is amazin 2

  • like this one but prefere the other one, this song is such a fukin quality song cum carl and pete bring back the libz

  • i personally prefer this one jst cos i fink the intro is played a bit better, does a bit more justice to agreat melody. luv the original too tho

  • anyone who prefers this? i cant understand that...i think this murders it

  • eh what you chatting ?, have you been taking some substances from pete's pocket

  • they put this one on the gratest hits album i prefer the other reely its more hectic and goes with the song better

  • this versions pretty cool, its like well better produced and shit but i think thts y i personally like the original coz its got like tht imense raw quality tht the libertines have

  • Death on the stairs vs live forever

    who wins

  • death on the stairs by far!

  • flawless.

  • Wow ;]

  • What Bernard Butler may of been able to do if he produced the whole album???

  • BEST VERSION!!

  • Best version of DOTS. Best Libs song ever. Babyshambles and DPT just can't reach this level of perfection.
