  • Amazing that this was almost a year ago you made this video. And now you are on google plus, just crushing it. Wow...

  • Hi Chris, this is similar to how I target my networking when going to events as well as online. I think I will attach the video here.

  • Hey Chris,

Love your video -it is from the heart and so true.

It was great to hang out at Howie's together. Your approach is totally rock solid as is the info you provide.

Hope to see you again soon!,

    Shira

  • I really have to say this. You must focus & concentrate on every word Chris says when he speaks. People high intelligence spew out little bits of info as an aside that are GOLDEN NUGGETS. In my experience, the people who hype too much, raise you to a heightened emotional state, and that's why you're drawn to them. Emotional connection. But when you are being appealed to by rational thought and genuine emotion, you really start to "get it". For me, at least, Chris Lang is that person.

  • It seems like forever since I've watched this video. So much good advice here, that I took it. Guess who MY approachable guru was?

  • I wish I could have learned about him from you years ago. But things happen for a reason, right? Acting like an authority on any subject does not make you an expert, if you know what I mean. Being a true authority in my eyes means cutting through the bs and telling it like it is. Explaining your wisdom as you've learned it through trial and error. And becoming a great communicator of those ideas.

  • That Paul Myers dude is pretty cool. I sent his book to a friend of mine to read and I'll take chunks out of it as I can, too...

  • @IamStevenVargas - I have been reading Paul's Talk Biz News for 12 years now, Paul Myers is one of the honest Gurus. Nice green advice too, stuff that worked back then, same stuff rocks now. No better advice on the web...

  • Amazing what multiple views of this becoming an authority video reveals. It's like a Kubrick movie. I get something new from it every time I watch it. Just pulled a nugget from a name mentioned in there by Chris. I'm off to do a little research on it. Oh, and Chris, a little tip on shooting video. Think "headroom". As in, the amount of empty space from the top of your head to the top of the frame. There should be very little. Too much at the beginning of this video. Find just the right amount.

  • The Approachable Guru.

  • Hey Chris, Glad to see you finally made it to the beach. Thanks for the tips in the video and in the video you made when we met in CT. That should be up in a day or two. Also... I've been a hypnotist for over 15 years and would be happy to answer a few questions. Talk soon, Bill

  • Well, it shows that you love your work in the dedication you bring, that has allowed you to rise as an authority in internet marketing! When should I watch for my next instalment of the wisdom of Chris Lang on the internet?

  • Oh, one other thing. You are now being (quite deservedly) touted as an expert, but I am wondering, how did you pick your field? Thanks in advance for answering my question, Chris!

  • @hypnojenn - How did I pick my field? I did the most stuipid thing ever, picked Internet Marketing because I love the business. What was stupid about that? I picked the hardest niche to succeed in. I have always wished I sold a normal product like a ShamWow or a SlapChop.

  • Your many comments attest to the fact that you are THE approachable guru, Chris. Responsiveness seems to be a big factor, and you certainly are responsive, no matter how busy you are, to the big clients, little clients, and potential clients. I also see that you very intentionally network to target and meet the person you think can bring you forward. Thanks for mentoring the rest of us!

  • Well, not only do I want to LEARN how to become an expert authority, I'll actually do it. You got my back, right, Chris?

  • @IamStevenVargas - I have been Chris Lang's best friend and camera guy for 3 years, you can trust him, because his personal integrity is more important that money or women. Except Margie, she comes first...

  • @RandleSports Seems like Margie's part of his success...

  • How ironic Chris, you were my approachable guru. I contacted you out of the blue probably nearly a year ago now to discuss Google Friend Connect. I wasn't sure I'd get a response, but figured if I never ask, I'd never know. I think you took a whole 5 minutes to respond and then phone me. You've been a great mentor and friend ever since. Thanks for everything Chris!

  • @jsterj1 - That is quite a complement Justin, sometimes it just so much easier to just jump on the phone with people and get away from the computer.

Paul Myers taught me that, he has been my first and foremost guru, the guy has taught me more about engaging my followers and creating close relationships than anyone else. Way ahead of his time, the practically invented social marketing.

  • @IamChrisLang I just got back on a long roadtrip listening to the book Delivering Happiness (Zappos) and Tony really goes into the importance of phones and great customer service being the foundation stones to long term relationships by creating an experience.

  • Going from 8 website visitors per day to 35,000 in 6 months. That's awesome progress and encouraging to all getting started. The key you mentioned in your video is to become an expert in your market. The best way to do that is implied credibility by getting already recognized experts in your desired market to endorse you. Infomercials use celebrity endorsements all the time and you can borrow this effective technique.

  • @alexanderalaric John Reese talked about incremental progress. You highlighted that here with your mantra "approach that 1 guru" to get in the door.

  • @alexanderalaric - To use a term I hate it's about Baby Steps....

  • Chris, your gratitude comes through very strongly in this video. Would you say that's a big part of being successful?

  • Chris, It is great to hear how you turned yourself into an authority through your interaction and working with other authorities.

  • Chris, I am so glad I met you, you for one are definitely an approachable expert! I have learned so much for you and really appreciate the advice and info you share!

  • @IamChrisLang You have definitely proven to us all that you practice what you preach. You have not only shown us all how to become an authority in our niche but you have remained very approachable despite your success. You are one of the most genuine and accessible "gurus" I know. Thank you for all you do and for your great content.

  • Great message Chris. You've given me something to work towards. I know a couple of experts I want to pursue. I look forward to your training.

  • @sandyturley - Of course just ask if help is needed, commenting on any guru's post is really appreciated. It does work. Comments are very hard to get these days, and they are all that much more valuable.

But if you don't get anything back on that guru's channel, well maybe that is the first sign that they don't fit the approachable category.

  • Honestly, I don't remember how I met you Chris, but it seems like you were there from day one, about 18 months ago. At that time I really thought this online stuff was going to a breeze, shows you how dumb I was, lol.

But a few months before Google Wave was to hit the market, I stumbled onto a "Nobody" named Chris who helped me tremendously when he had no reason to. I've seen all the work you guys have put in since those days and your success is well-deserved, congrats my brotha - keep it up!

  • @1marcusroman - Thanks Marcus, I have seen you come a long way to, I hope I truly deserve the devotion I receive from you. Now if I can just get a plane out of Connecticut I will really have somethin goin on....

  • great video, looking forward to seeing you overtake armand ...

  • @harryselent - We are already #16 in 21 hours in Google search, he don't stand a chance LOL. Underdog up up and awayyyyyyy!

  • @IamChrisLang you were #2 in my search in google for "how to become an expert authority"

  • It hit a home run with me - it takes to get to know one person of influence in your niche to get promoted to the next level and all the way up. That exactly describes how it happened to me over the last year - from no one to someone who manages marketing for a big company now....It all boils down to the good-old word-of-mouth or relationship marketing, being the driving force behind many of peoples success in business. Nice watching your vids Chris.

  • @daidaidaiism - Thanks for the good words. Cheers!

  • I like your down to earth and blunt style. It reminds me of how we are in our business. We are more offline but it is about helping the offline world get online.

What I hope to become known for is my Relationship Marketing Model - 4ligo.net/RelationshipModel/ - I am currently working on a book surrounding it and working on putting more white papers together online... plus maybe if I can figure out the best way to do it, make some videos...

  • @SpeakingBadger - We should schedule an interview with you and I and have you interview me and talk a lot about your book. Then send me copy of the book and we can take it high on the Amazon list.

  • @IamChrisLang - As soon as I actually finish the book, I will definitely take you up on the offer... Just adds more pressure and reason to get it done. But it is coming together piece by piece.

  • First of all, this is just a post of appreciation. I am not ready to be a case study. Mari is one super person. Did you know that she is a fellow Canadian? Mari is taking a lot of people to another level up. But, those same people keep taking her to another level. The discoveries you have made and the common sense approach you try to adhere to are making you a great authority. We must keep level heads in all the changes. All current players in Social Media bring stuff to the table.

  • @glenzgolfvi - Thanks Glen, really I appreciate your time here and on Buzz, I love peeps who take the time to build relationships online and hang out and get to know me, real cool buddy!

Be sure to get on my list at the link above Glen, my first newsletter in 10 years comes out tomorrow. And be sure to hook up when you come to Phoenix to play golf!

  • @IamChrisLang Thanks Chris. Some day I will love to visit Phoenix, again. I look forward to your newsletter. I am moving quickly. When done I hope to have even more time set up my "empire" of how to create golf movements that are only referred to but not taught. I am getting excited about this and your teaching and description of how the Google tools can work together will help immensely.

  • One of the things I like about you Chris is that you are real and you speak your truth without all the hype. It has taken GutZ for you to take a stand and make predictions when it comes to the future of communication media. I like people with GutZ :D

You are also accessible to your members like when you offer your phone number on certain days. Very unusual in my opinion and while I don't always agree with you, I have always learned from you and have taken action on your advice. I appreciate it!

  • @gutzywoman - Thanks Debbie, Margie is going to have a hard time getting my head thru doors the rest of this year LOL. Can't wait to get back to Phoenix and get the rest of my take aways from Howie's on YouTube for you.

The bad news (good news for me, I like stormy weather) is that they cancelled our flight with the storm over the great lakes today.

  • @IamChrisLang Boy the weather is really something isn't it? flooding going on around us here in Oz. Lucky we left Queensland when we did.

As for your head... I thought I noticed it growing a bit... What else can one expect when one becomes an expert ;D

  • Happy Holidays Chris. Thanks for the great video. Meeting you in Phoenix and following your advice has provided me a lot of great information. Thank you for sharing all your insight.

  • Hey Chris, I know I met you and knew of you through my social media course with Simon Ford, since then I have people like you in my life and I am very pleased for it. I have to say, your advice is the best way. You do not have to reinvent the wheel this we are told so often and its so true. Looking forward to learning more off you.

  • @kiwigaltube - Thanks Lisa, really I have Simon to thank too. Without our competition for the the Google Friend Connect term back in 2009 I would not have YouTube at my back these days.

The proliferation of Facebook has made it impossible to sell anything around Google networking. So I am having to reinvent myself and my business. If Simon had not taught me what I know about YouTube back then I would simply become the next tired old guy hawking Facebook products.

  • Sounds good to me! Any thoughts on re-establishing authority? I was silent for several months due to a serious bike accident. A lot of folks think I just went away!

  • @SellMoreNowCRM - Just tell em your story, there are entire personas on the web built around how I came back from the brink, look at Anik Singal and how he tells the story of his health issues. Actualy this could play big for you in the end.

So how are you now, fully recovered?

  • Hey Chris, great advice. I heard a quote one time, that you are the sum/average of the top 5 people you associate with. So if you want to be an expert, you have to break into the market somehow by talking personally to an expert. Find your way in, learn what they know, and then meet who they know. It's great to see how successful you're becoming and even better to personally know an authority like yourself. Cheers Chris!

  • @tdparisi - Very true Tim, I have been at the top of my game for a long time, but it was very important to get to the next level and learn from those that are more skilled than I. It takes your thinking, drive and attitude to the next level.

I have been stalled for a while now, but that is natural, just like in weight loss or weight training you hit plateaus, so you have to work even harder to break out of them. I am sure that will make sense to you as a martial arts authority.

  • @IamChrisLang

I completely understand the plateaus. Most times it takes finding someone at that next level in order to really get there. Believe it or not, that quote is one that I heard from a weight loss / muscle expert that I've been following. But it applies to pretty much all aspects of your life.

If you want to improve, ask someone better than you for help. That's why they are an authority. They know what's going on. And they want to know they've made a difference for someone.

  • Hey There Mr. Chris,

Ever since you provided me with personal counseling for one of my clients (over a year and a half ago) I've recognized you as a definite mentor and appreciate all of your content. I'm very much looking forward to your newsletter and all the best for the new year!

    -Michael Lofton

  • @IamMichaelLofton - I was just telling Margie you were the first person who paid me for social marketing SEO advice. What a long strange trip it has been, huh Michael?

  • @IamChrisLang - Chris, You are 100% right on, the big shows definitely drown out the little guys. They tried talking me into the Jim Boat while there and I took a pass.

Any suggestions to specific regional shows? (I am 1/2 hr. away from Willie Crawford) 4-1/2 hrs. from Atlanta.

  • @abicarmen - I do have to say Willie is one of the most accessible peeps in marketing. Good choice. I would love to live in San Diego as that is where tons of things happen around Mari Smith and Paul Colligan.

If you want Willie, I would start with the RT / FB / commenting thing now. Then he will already know you when you get face to face. But when you engage thru social ask him questions so his social manager or himself has to respond. I did the same thing with Mari and Jack.

  • You're absolutely right about using focused leverage to first be recognized as an expert and leverage that into bigger things. Was noticed by Howie during his IM Remarkable launch and while I could have done a much better job leveraging things, I've learned a lot from Howie and contributed value to his biz.

Where do I start with a hypnosis business?

Looking forward to learning from you in Tube Rankings and applying it!

  • @TheMattDetrick - Hook up with Margie, she knows the hypnosis market real well. She can advise you on who to connect with. Just connect with her thru the networking group.

  • @IamChrisLang @themattdetrick I am also interested in the hypnotherapy field. We should connect...

  • Chris... It's more than luck.

Finding a guru at top of game and meshing with them is great advice... that and damn hard work.

I know how hard you've worked to get known.

  • @waltgosh - You were there and that's where I met you in 2008 Walt, yeah it was hard work, but anyone could have done it. Howie talked about this at his house, guru hopping is the cause of why most fail. Just like niche hopping is the other reason most fail. Me? I am just plain to darn stubborn to let go!

  • @IamChrisLang Yep... that's The Secret: Find a guru (or someone you trust who's blazed the trail you want to travel before you, select and stick to a niche ... a niche you are passionate about... work your ass off... and pursue it with, as Chet Holmes says in The Ultimate Sales Machine, "pig-headed determination".

Looking forward to your Newsletter, and I'll give you a call later this week.

  • @waltgosh - Indeed, it's more than luck.

"Luck can only get you so far." Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince; Hermione Granger referring to a luck potion Felix Felicis :)

  • Hey Chris. Thanks for all the great information you provide every month in your membership. Straight talk, tested techniques, great group

  • youtube videos require not so many backlinks to stay high on google

  • You're my go to expert when it comes to getting youtube videos ranked. I appreciate that you've made yourself and your expertise so available to me. Looking forward to hanging out with you in 2011.

  • I have been checking out your work since the summer of 2008 (Wickedly Evil) and it's really cool to watch your progress. Congrats!

  • @JanaMurray67 - Thanks Jana, what a long strange trip it's been, actually you normal peeps should have better success, really, I did this the hard way and got crushed a few times.

  • @IamChrisLang - Chris, with talking about this long, strange journey...what would you say was the biggest, most important lesson learned through all of this?

If you could give your readers and followers one single piece of advice regarding this "Pick a Guru" topic, what would it be?

  • Good advice. You make it sound easy-find one guru!

  • @tamargold - It is easy to find you one guru, follow them on Facebook and Twitter, RT all their Tweets, comment, like and share all their Facebook posts.

All the gurus speak somewhere, and free too, you can get to top people like Mari Smith, Warren Whitlock and Paul Colligan, because they speak at small shows in very accessible venues. I was lucky, I spoke at a show with these guys.

The San Diego show was only $195. Easy, see? But you have to resist the urge to guru hop, pick one and stick...

  • I was happy to be there at this event. And witness the shift of your authority.

It was a small group of experts with a more personal atmosphere, at Howie's home. Friendships were made.

Excellent work, but not only that.. you never gave up. You were persistent and along the way you became an expertise in your field.

    Congradulations:)

  • Chris, you underestimate your notoriety a bit. I have been following you for the past year and have learned a lot along the way.

Quick question though on topic. In order to become associated personally with some of the 'experts' I believe you need to meet face-to-face at seminars, shows etc. So the question is, how do you allocate the time on the road vs. time spent doing the actual work? Is there a magic number or percentage that you would suggest? Just got back from Armand's last Big Seminar.

  • @abicarmen - The big shows are the wrong things to target till you have done the leg work like I have.

Then at big shows you know some of the gurus, you can do the same. It's guilt by association. But you don't have to pay $2,000, I met Mari Smith at a show that only cost $200.

But you need to find out where YOUR guru is appearing and make that face to face thing happen. But start on FB and TT sharing, commenting and RTing.

Important: I skipped the JimBoat to speak at Howie's.....

  • @abicarmen That is a great question. I wonder if the time expense of traveling outweighs time spent doing social media the right way. Maybe finding the gurus that are known to be approachable, like Chris here, is the way to go. Knowing how to become a value to them, online, seems to be the key. Because meeting someone in person, you can't really tell how much skill they have on the computer. Or how much they take action. The personal association comes after and becomes stronger, quicker.

  • Marginal authority is all you need to stand out. You don't have to be perfect, just a little better than the crowd. In many fields that does not require much at all. Pick a niche, become involved, stick to your guns, and you will be recognized.

  • @vevstad - Defenitely right Vegard, I am definitely less than perfect :]

  • Congrats on all of your hard work paying off...it's always a great feeling being recognized for what you have done.

Here's a question...how do you suggest, for people who don't have many contacts, to go about finding and really getting in with a guru when so many of them are locked away in Ivory Towers?

  • @EliseonDotCom - Blog comments are a great way to get to a guru, blog comments are dead lately, everyone is spending time on Facebook and where as I used to get tons of blog comments I now get few.

Even Ryan Diess on his blog is only pulling 10 to 20 comments lately, so when I comment there I stand out. I got to know Jack by participating in his Ning group.

So you have to start small, stick with it, took me 9 months, I worked the Ning group every day and created 33% of the posts.

  • It is great to see you finally being edified as an expert by the experts now Chris. I never new you worked so closely with Mari. Looking forward to your new pdf. and what expert things you will be covering.

  • @RebeccaHappy - Thanks Rebecca, that means allot, been a long strange trip!

  • @RebeccaHappy - Thanks Rebecca, that means allot, been a long strange trip!

See why I talk about using a tripod? Seems I am an expert at pointing the phone at the sky LOL!

  • Excuse the video quality, I don't make much of a expert tripod or camera guy authority. Just a quick video on my Droid while I was thinking about how you could duplicate my success.

  • @IamChrisLang - Wow, that's actually pretty good video if that's from a Droid. I've seen much worse video taken on a prosumer cam.

  • @EliseonDotCom - Too bad I seem to be better at pointing the phone at the sky than at myself. LOL
