How has no one else noticed the one on the right is sped up? Look at the turn at 1:02, theres no way its that fast, and the steering wheel and the drivers helmet is twitching around way too fast
@BLWN454 I actually don't think that's sped up. the drivers head is bobbing around because in 2011 we have to drive up over curbs like we learned to drive from a book in a Kellogg's box
@eamh2002 - The track is still exactly the same apart from the re-profiled chicane, which actually added about 3 seconds to the times.
You seem to feel the bumps more in the old clip so much more because the quality of the footage was so poor and the mounting points for the cameras were nowhere near as stable.
Put a camera from 1986 on a modern car and I'd wager the bumps would look even worse, not to mention, the cars would look HEAPS harder to drive.
@Marcus666Sund 2004-2005 there were no slicks they got banned after 1997 because the car's were "too fast" But one thing is right. 2004 were the fastest cars.
Comparisons are useless if I have to choose between Vettel and Senna, I prefer to Senna, this comparison not really serves, is more comparisons do not exist in, Formula 1 is talent which shows the pilot. Pity that in those seasons it was a race car, now is a machine with lots of buttons
Please stop comparing 1986 and 2011! In 1986 the cars had more power and it was much more difficult to handle them. BUT: Today drivers have to press so many buttons, need to save their car (tyres, engine, etc.).
It's not easier today and not more difficult. Just the field of duty has changed.
@wheelychecker I agree, but I'm pretty sure the "nursing" side driving was much more important in the 80s. Firstly, engines and everything are more reliable now and electronics take care of many things.
@wheelychecker Why not compare it ? Beside the noise , driving style car , video quality , you can enjoy so many others watching a side by side comparison .
@motanelustelistu look up f1 turbo with 1400 ps nd you will see that the guy in the right screen is just crusing hes not even reving the thing out, so the title is missleading
@wheelychecker the thing is: eletronics almost substitute all of the driver technique ( heel 'n toe; pumping acceleration pedal; and many other stuff ). Senna said it once, so who we are to disagree?
the cars in the 70's were much faster because they had no strong car rules like after this time period. most of the track records, especially the nürburgring nordschleife, are from these days. because they focussed on high speed, the cars were getting slow on tracks like monaco.
@turinturambar1812 Wow... are you serious? Most lap records made in those days are irrelevant as comparisons because there isn't a single GP track that has retained exactly same configuration or unchanged. And Nordschleife? Excellent example to use the record from 1975, considering that the GP hasn't been held on the that track since 1976.
@deggis4 fact is: todays f1 cars getting faster, BUT back in the 70's formula 1 cars had power just around 1000 HP, because of turbo-chargers, compressors and big blocks. until today, theres no car that can beat the records on nordschleife, the fastest cars in the moment are pagani zonda R GTX (6:47 min) and the gumpert apollo.
@turinturambar1812 You seem to be talking partly about 80s turbo era and please stop staring at the bhp figure only (aerodynamics, tyres, ever heard of them?). How can a modern F1 beat some old record on a track that it doesn't visit? (Altough, apparently you didnt know that the all-time and still standing Nordschleife record is from 1983, by Stefan Bellof in Group C Porsche, which was ultimately not faster than F1 (comparable times can be found from many other circuits).)
This is just an awful comparison. 1.36 is by no means a flying lap from Senna. In 1985 he lapped 1.20.4 in qualifying and fastest lap in race was Alboretos 1.22.6.
OMFG!!! xDDD The pilot on the right is a clown... I'm sure all of you who are saying that Vettel is a clown, can drive a fomula 1 car with 250km/h on a 4-5m wide circuit with no traction control.
todays car has alot more downforce, and all the rest, todays car would obiously win but the 1986 car is hardly thrashing it, looks like a warmup to me.
the thing is though i'd rather have the john player special. f1 cars today are too fragile. you kick the tail out your gonna spin in the new cars but with senna's you can kick the tail out and have fun with it
"that old car is same as today's karting cars" - You have no idea about turbocharged monsters back then. Go back to your F1 2010 by Codemasters and think you're ultimate warrior, buhaha. Lame ass.
Sennas car was a seat, a steering wheel with nothing but maybe a button or two, a bump shifter, very little down force a ton of power and your ass. Now its a seat, a 40 thousand dollar steering wheel, paddles, ton of down force, ton of computers, and if needed, your ass.
Those 1.5l V6 turbo engine's were horrible to drive.. +1200hp in qualifying. That is incredible amount power so small engine. In new Senna document there is great clip of senna driving this car.. whee spin all the time. Real happytail :) Its intresting to see 2013 when 1.6 4cylinder turbo's come's F1. There's really cool clip of hamilton 2011 in monaco were he come's to main straight and use drs and whole kers.. u can hear that it wheel spin to whole straight. 2013 engine torgue is total difer..
the car on senna era had a very little downforce with a 1200 bhp.and a manual transmission compare to the new car with traction control and energy recovery system. semi auto transmission and good grip

@thylegion you think you can drive an F1 car up to those standards? its still a drivers sport, and the best will show (Vettel, Wet Monza, first win in a Toro Rosso!) at the end of the day, its a sport, and things will always change! Even the Olympics have changed to keep up with technology!
@GamerSpencer Good story, really, but show me where exactly in your post you've proven me wrong about real cars vs modern toys? ^^ OK, things will always change etc. - that doesn't mean nowadays we have toys, and back then the cars were real machines? Riiight...
@thylegion no they're just technically better than they were 25 years ago. doesn't mean that men aren't men now, its still dangerous DESPITE the safety they have now. the cars are as fast, with less BHP, and corner faster. and insulting other users isn't very nice is it..? Opinions are allowed here, otherwise there wouldn't be a comments page!
@Liqu1d16 Who asked you, pencildick? Go and read more Holy Bible and listen to rap instead of participating in grown men's debate, you twarpy cuntfaced prick :)
@keytek9 like as in... how easy the drivers have it, 1986 was pure driver talent, barely any aerodynamics, just a massive turbo charged engine and a driver, now you got so many rules... tons of electrical controlled stuff.. its boring.
@theonlylolking It's really an unfair comparison. Also, the F1 cars in 86 didn't have the technology like we find on the modern cars. Cars aside, however, Senna had Prost, Mansell, Piquet, Berger, and towards the end he had Schumacher. Vettel, who does he have to compete with? It's not about the cars, or the race, it's about competition and who one competes with. Not taking anything away from Vettel because he's clearly awesome I'm just saying that we can't compare cars.
@theonlylolking Basicly yeah, Thats why the drivers get so much attention, I care more about how the drivers win the race than the race being won, plus in 1986 and them years you could really tell a good driver, such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and the rest...
@TheSuperyall I agree, but it takes a good driver to be able to process all that tech. They are a LOT faster, and thats not easy to control. But they are all good drivers, no doubt.
@Voldness They are faster, but the aerodynamics make it easier to control, and the team practically does all the electrical stuff, they tell the driver to turn a dial on the steering wheel... and i bet if you told a modern f1 driver to get into that lotus 98 and say "go as fast as you can" at Monaco, they wouldn't. or they would crash
@TheSuperyall exactly , people forget the main quality of a true driver , and that is the will to put your life on the line for p one . and its everything from the safety of the car itself to the actual downforce that was lacking . to control cars like that is with more mechanical grip . raw feel of the vehicle and engine . now wind doesmost of the dirty work .. and the real time data going to pots every lap .
@TheSuperyall - For your information driving aids have been banned for 5 years now, no traction control no launch control no ABS no automatic transmission.. LOL you make it sound like the cars of today drive themselves. That's ridiculous! Driving a modern f1 car requires levels of fitness to the extreme to handle the g-forces and exhaustion.. It's not like anybody can drive an f1 car, there are still crap drivers, and there are still drivers who stand out from the rest just like in the 80s..
@Anime998877 Exactly try driving a 1200-1400 hp at wheels , car with your only traction control being right foot control . Mind you these were Manual Gear boxes , depress clutch with each gear-change, not synced optimum computer shifts
@Anime998877 thats not my point, im saying back then it was real racing, i know its hard to drive an f1 car, im not saying its easy, but its easier. such as power steering, more aerodynamic wings.
I'd rather watch the '85 race. Cars looked better, sounded better, were driven by better drivers, and they actually raced. It wasn't 90 minutes of following Vettel around in parade formation.
This video really shows how much downforce has improved in the last 25 years. Even though the 80s was the turbo ear in F1 in which the teams could have 1200bhp in qualifying trim, it doesn't mean that much at a track like Monte-Carlo. At Monte-Carlo, downforce is more important than power.
Much better brakes and downforce in the 2011 f1. In raw power/acceleration the 86 car is faster, but the 2011 f1 has insane amounts of grip. A drag race might have been a much different tale.
The chicane Sebastian Vettel went round at 0:50 was a bit different as you can see. Fastest car that ever went round this circuit was M. Schumacher with a time of 1:14.439... but he had traction control and he had the option to put his foot down and not worry if he was going to spin out. There are less driving aids now but back in them dayz, nobody new what the term 'driving aids' meant. Scary cars+a couple of BAD crashes= FIA thought it was time to do something about it.
This has to be the worst comparison i've ever seen. The Lotus had a heavy camera mounted purely to get an impression of speed for the viewer back in the day. It was taken off as it slowed the car down for racing. Also, it was a practice session with a full fuel load. Vettels lap was an all out qualifying lap for goodness sake!
Lousy comparison...Vettel qualifying lap against some practice or opening lap from Senna...pole position was 1:22.6 in 1986, aprox. 9 seconds difference...
in 1991 the f1 cars were slower by only 2 sconds with stick shift... 2004 had the fastest f1 cars ever....2day cars are not entertaining..........comparing, u needed balls to drive back thenn,,,,check top gear hamltion drives senns car/////
and check kimi monaco 2004- fuckin amazing, no comparison, or senna spa 1991
@MrRealradiofan2000 well, that's only true if you consider lap times only, without taking into account the difference in the cars they raced. Senna raced in a car that wasn't as aerodynamically advanced, had more power (which may sound like a good thing, but it can also be more of a handful to drive), and most important of all - the shifter was a lever next to the steering wheel (no paddle shifters back then), which means he was steering with one hand for most of the time...
@seikenflyer Put Ayrton Senna in one of today's cars and you will see another 10 seconds go away, lol!! That dude had the heart of a dragon and the balls of God.
@dcorsi Fuck that, back then was still the best. Our F1 drivers today has aid from technology you don't even see them struggle against the people who did it back then.
@choclets2 I'm not arguing who is better, or what period is best, just showing the actual time difference is much smaller than the one presented in the video.
Make the value judgment you prefer, in fact I do not care that much.
@dcorsi not as big a gap as the video makes out is it?! I'd love to see how fast todays cars would go round this track if the rule book was binned which by all rights it should be I am all for driver safety but F1 should be on edge and dangerous!
LA TECNOLOGIA HA CAMBIADO Y OBVIAMENTE SE HAN MEJORADO MUCHO LOS TIEMPOS, PERO A PESAR QUE HOY HAY MUCHA SEGURIDAD, LA VIEJA FORMULA 1, SOBRE TODO LA DE LOS 70´S ERA MAS EMOCIONANTE (ESO SI, MUY PELIGROSA HAY QUE DECIRLO)
so you say taking a corner 2x faster with 2x more g'force requires less sweat and accuracy? "Nowadays the cars just do the entire job " so if cars do the entire job, why did massa or webber couldn't mach their's team mates? And traction control is banned. The biggest difference was drivers safety. And that means that drivers had bigger balls, but it doesn't mean they were more skilled at driving or that they put more sweat to their's victory.
The thing is that, not only the cars changed and evoluted, but the track changed too. That corner at the end of the tunnel, for example... And, back in 86, you had to guide the car one handed because the gear. Makes me wonder how much Vettel could do with an 86' car... maybe 20 seconds slower than Senna hehe
@fallenearth yeah, but senna would do 20s slower in the high tech car of vettel's. I don't understand why people underrate nowdays drivers compared to 80's or 90's.
This has been flagged as spam show
I declare this pointless
a) you're not necessarily taking fastest lap times
b) if there isn't a freaking difference in speed in 25 years then F1 needs to go to their room.
of course F1 of 2011 is faster. With all the technology behind it, how could it NOT be??

@TheSuperyall wait ?>???? how is that a pussy lmao ur comment makes no sence
keytek9 2 weeks ago
@keytek9 like as in... how easy the drivers have it, 1986 was pure driver talent, barely any aerodynamics, just a massive turbo charged engine and a driver, now you got so many rules... tons of electrical controlled stuff.. its boring.
TheSuperyall 2 weeks ago
@TheSuperyall So for you it is about how hard it was to drive the cars and not the actual race itself?
theonlylolking 2 weeks ago
@theonlylolking It's really an unfair comparison. Also, the F1 cars in 86 didn't have the technology like we find on the modern cars. Cars aside, however, Senna had Prost, Mansell, Piquet, Berger, and towards the end he had Schumacher. Vettel, who does he have to compete with? It's not about the cars, or the race, it's about competition and who one competes with. Not taking anything away from Vettel because he's clearly awesome I'm just saying that we can't compare cars.
gordoncouch 2 weeks ago
@theonlylolking Basicly yeah, Thats why the drivers get so much attention, I care more about how the drivers win the race than the race being won, plus in 1986 and them years you could really tell a good driver, such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and the rest...
TheSuperyall 2 weeks ago
@TheSuperyall I agree, but it takes a good driver to be able to process all that tech. They are a LOT faster, and thats not easy to control. But they are all good drivers, no doubt.
Voldness 2 weeks ago
@Voldness They are faster, but the aerodynamics make it easier to control, and the team practically does all the electrical stuff, they tell the driver to turn a dial on the steering wheel... and i bet if you told a modern f1 driver to get into that lotus 98 and say "go as fast as you can" at Monaco, they wouldn't. or they would crash
TheSuperyall 1 week ago
@TheSuperyall exactly , people forget the main quality of a true driver , and that is the will to put your life on the line for p one . and its everything from the safety of the car itself to the actual downforce that was lacking . to control cars like that is with more mechanical grip . raw feel of the vehicle and engine . now wind doesmost of the dirty work .. and the real time data going to pots every lap .
mushrume 1 week ago
@TheSuperyall - For your information driving aids have been banned for 5 years now, no traction control no launch control no ABS no automatic transmission.. LOL you make it sound like the cars of today drive themselves. That's ridiculous! Driving a modern f1 car requires levels of fitness to the extreme to handle the g-forces and exhaustion.. It's not like anybody can drive an f1 car, there are still crap drivers, and there are still drivers who stand out from the rest just like in the 80s..
Anime998877 1 week ago
@Anime998877 Exactly try driving a 1200-1400 hp at wheels , car with your only traction control being right foot control . Mind you these were Manual Gear boxes , depress clutch with each gear-change, not synced optimum computer shifts
cornfused 1 week ago
@Anime998877 thats not my point, im saying back then it was real racing, i know its hard to drive an f1 car, im not saying its easy, but its easier. such as power steering, more aerodynamic wings.
TheSuperyall 1 week ago
I'd rather watch the '85 race. Cars looked better, sounded better, were driven by better drivers, and they actually raced. It wasn't 90 minutes of following Vettel around in parade formation.

Jason1Derulo 2 weeks ago
This video really shows how much downforce has improved in the last 25 years. Even though the 80s was the turbo ear in F1 in which the teams could have 1200bhp in qualifying trim, it doesn't mean that much at a track like Monte-Carlo. At Monte-Carlo, downforce is more important than power.

F1 1986 = Indycar 2011 LOL
iwcham1979 2 weeks ago 12
Much better brakes and downforce in the 2011 f1. In raw power/acceleration the 86 car is faster, but the 2011 f1 has insane amounts of grip. A drag race might have been a much different tale.

The 86 Lotus looks more visably on it than the RB7 probably becuase back in 1986 there was no restictive nonsense in the tech regulations...

Antimatter31 3 weeks ago
This has to be the worst comparison i've ever seen. The Lotus had a heavy camera mounted purely to get an impression of speed for the viewer back in the day. It was taken off as it slowed the car down for racing. Also, it was a practice session with a full fuel load. Vettels lap was an all out qualifying lap for goodness sake!

Lousy comparison...Vettel qualifying lap against some practice or opening lap from Senna...pole position was 1:22.6 in 1986, aprox. 9 seconds difference...

1) Vetel's lap time in 2011 was only slightly better than Raikkonen's lap time in 2005 qualifying: 1:13.644;
2) fastest lap record during race is still owned by M Schumacher: 1:14.439 (in 2004).

Notice how Senna had to change his gears manually...
Vettel doesn't need to remove his hands from the steering wheel at all.
I'd say the skill required to drive the 1986 turbo cars with manual gearboxes and worse grip probably required more skill and balls.

I can't believe that Vettel is faster than Senna.
MrRealradiofan2000 1 month ago 4
@MrRealradiofan2000 well, that's only true if you consider lap times only, without taking into account the difference in the cars they raced. Senna raced in a car that wasn't as aerodynamically advanced, had more power (which may sound like a good thing, but it can also be more of a handful to drive), and most important of all - the shifter was a lever next to the steering wheel (no paddle shifters back then), which means he was steering with one hand for most of the time...

@dcorsi Fuck that, back then was still the best. Our F1 drivers today has aid from technology you don't even see them struggle against the people who did it back then.
choclets2 1 month ago
@choclets2 I'm not arguing who is better, or what period is best, just showing the actual time difference is much smaller than the one presented in the video.
Make the value judgment you prefer, in fact I do not care that much.

mcdonaldgeraldmark 3 weeks ago
@dcorsi not as big a gap as the video makes out is it?! I'd love to see how fast todays cars would go round this track if the rule book was binned which by all rights it should be I am all for driver safety but F1 should be on edge and dangerous!
AmicableJudgeRhino 2 weeks ago
@dcorsi Nouvelle chicane takes about 5 seconds less for them in 1986.

so you say taking a corner 2x faster with 2x more g'force requires less sweat and accuracy? "Nowadays the cars just do the entire job " so if cars do the entire job, why did massa or webber couldn't mach their's team mates? And traction control is banned. The biggest difference was drivers safety. And that means that drivers had bigger balls, but it doesn't mean they were more skilled at driving or that they put more sweat to their's victory.
cud0s 1 month ago
The thing is that, not only the cars changed and evoluted, but the track changed too. That corner at the end of the tunnel, for example... And, back in 86, you had to guide the car one handed because the gear. Makes me wonder how much Vettel could do with an 86' car... maybe 20 seconds slower than Senna hehe
fallenearth 1 month ago
@fallenearth yeah, but senna would do 20s slower in the high tech car of vettel's. I don't understand why people underrate nowdays drivers compared to 80's or 90's.
