  • Positive put on first, then negative

  • At 1:23 it should read Positive and Negative not the other way around. You take out the negative first and you attach the Positive first. This is really a bad and dangerous HOW TO video.

  • are vehicles battery wires color coded?...cuase i forgot how it went! (my vehicles wires are red n' yellow)

  • 1.09 ohhhhhh yeaaahhhhhh work that hole.

  • which cable do ou put back on first? it mdoesnt say and im not trying to get electrocuted, is it that hard to add that 3 second sentence in the video?

  • really---where is do you look for a How To video and race is a topic!. Take the the white cape off dude. Its the 21st century

  • haha garageband loops in the background....;)

  • hey this video was taken straight from ehow with him dubbed over!

  • this video doesn't tell you which cable to put on and take off first.

  • If I change my battery exactly like the guy in the vid, I may fry my fingers or worse! This should be taken down.

  • Umm, what's with the non-skippable ad :-|

  • good vid.

  • nothing to it at all right but honestly..... if you didn't see this guy in the video wouldn't you think he was a white boy?

  • @DaGeneral16 Defs :)

But his profile says he's from Canada which is where I'm from, and up here Black guys who sound like him are more common then Blacks who speak with Black American accents. That's because while a few communities of African-American origin do exist in Canada, they are a very small minority. Those communities do, typically, have some of the accent, but most Blacks are of Carribean or African origin, and since the culture's different their kids mix and end up sounding like that

  • @Mehtaphorical I learned something new. (thumbs up)

  • If you bridge wires between the terminals and the new battery before you disconect the old battery in theory you won't have to mess about re-programming the sterio/radio codes as you never stopped the flow of electric through the terminals.

  • Hmmm, I always used to disconnect the power first. The negative is the earth isn't it, so while that is connected you are "safe" is the conclusion I gave to. I connect in the opposite, negative (safety land), then positive.

  • @AdamAus85 The negative is attached to the metal body of the car as well. If the negative is connected and you touch the car while removing the positive, then your body could complete the circuit and give you a bit of a shock.

  • @lorded2 Ahuh. Well I do make sure never to actually come into contact with the terminals themselves. I shake them off at the plastic coated wires.

  • it is importan too loose the negative clamp first folks

  • I guess i should feel stupid because i've never changed out a car battery before and am looking this up so i can do it myself, eh Chunko?

  • This tutorial leads to the false conclusion, that when installing the battery, the negative terminal should be hooked up first, whereas the POSITIVE terminal should be reconnected prior to the negative one!

  • The guy in the video didn't wear any gloves......

  • @dtao114 batteries are less than 5 years old

  • go chris!

  • this is a great tutorial, clear, and o the point. thanks for posting

  • I really hope this is as easy as it looks

  • 55 Ah??

  • This how-to misses something VERY important.

When refitting a new battery the video should have explicitly said to first attach the positive cable first and tighten the bolts, and then attach the negative cable. IN THAT VERY SPECIFIC ORDER.

Instead it says: "Attach and tighten the negative and positive cables attaching the bolts." Crazy! Really crazy for a how-to they don't make that very clear.

  • does anyone know what kind of battery I need for a 1998 nissan maxima??

  • @djzing2009 I went to Canadian tire to find a replacement for mine. Just ask one of the service reps there since I notice you're from Canada as well.

  • I only watched about 30 to 40secs of this video and realized I could change a car battery without anyone telling me how to do it... I'm the kind of person who doesn't realize they need an oil change. so trust me you can do it too. had a friend drive me to an autozone, took my old battery, said "i need a new one" they guy gave me a new one bought a socket wrench got back home, and my car was back on in less than 15mins.

  • PERFECT! NOW I JUST GOTTA TRY

  • You're sick AllowKarl. I use old battery acid as a salad dressing. Tastes kind of funky.

  • I find that hybrid deep cycle batteries last longer in cars. They have thicker lead plates and can take neglect (like not starting for a week in the cold) a little better. Only catch is you usually need to buy a battery 20% larger than the oem battery due to deep cycle batts not having as many cranking amps. I live in Michigan, most of the batteries sold here are hybrid batteries, to deal with the winters. My duralast hybrid in my truck has lasted 8 years so far. I only had to add water once.

  • Hey! Metallica made a song after this... :)

  • bless your heart for taking the time to make this video! thank you so much!!!

  • Great:) Now show me how to put distilled water into the battery. Or just comment me:)

  • one thing he forgot to mention is when you are re connecting the cables connect the positive first then the negative. you dont really need eye protection or gloves. u just gotta remember to work on 1 terminal at a time and never rest a metal tool on the battery between the terminals or else it til spark and possibly blow up or start leaking.

  • Hey, I've got an idea! I think I'll troll YouTube for all the things I've already learned how to do, and then flame people for not intuitively knowing how to do them so I can feel better about myself! I think I'll start with calculus, playing guitar, and restoring engines.

Seriously, Chunky? You're 27, and trying to make teenagers feel bad about themselves for having the motivation to learn how to do something new? That's unbelievably pathetic.

  • @Drive571 pretty much sums up a majority of the youtubers ive encountered

  • @Drive571 some of us dont have fathers to teach us this... hes a scum bag

  • @Drive571 Thats exactly what i was gonna do XD, but i mean come on, you can just figure out how to change it just by looking at it

  • @orlin258 I agree, you can just look at it and figure it out but imagine what its like for someone that has never been under the hood or wants to learn the precautions. every time i learning something new i always research it to find those little precautions that tend to slip word of mouth

  • all this time i was told not to use my bare hands to disconnect a battery because i can get shocked, is this possible? my family/friends scare me too much >:{

  • if you dont have the common sense to change a car battery you shouldnt be around cars

  • Should you reinstall with the postivie terminal first then the negative second?

  • everybody has to start somewhere. you weren't born knowing how to fix cars!!!!!!!!!

  • are you serious? Like changing the battery in a remote car? Wow. Even I know changing the firing pin in a Glock isnt the same as changing one in an M4. Your examples are horrible.

  • You seem to have some issue with reading as well as changing batteries. I clearly stated that this is similar to changing the batteries in the remote for a TV. I did say that a child who could change the batteries in a RC car could do this if they had the required strength to lift the battery but made now reference at that point to any similarity in the tasks. Its a shame you, being a grown man, can't.

  • How is "disconnect wire; put in new battery; reconnect wire" similar in any way to differences between changing the firing pin in a pistol and rifle? You have to ensure the correct orientation of polarity in a TV remote, don't you?

  • @chunkyfecalbreakfast I agree.. this deminstration could get people hurt. Dont believe or follow the instructions to everything you see on the internet. Man.. this should be taken of the net.

  • ur mean dude lol...that aint true...people jus want to learn plain n simple

  • omfg so complicated......

  • what he didnt tell you is that you are ment to remove the negative first and put the negative on last when replacing the battery.. as batterys can explode

  • I like to throw my old batteries in a creek next to an Elementary School.

  • I open it up and pour it into the same creek then I make a lunch box for kids out of the battery housing.. I throw in a free can of beer to the first 100 kids who buy my Battery lunchboxes

  • my kid found your battery with a dead duck on it.

  • 6th! thanks for the video, I'm changing my battery tomorrow morning.....we'll see how that goes!!!!

  • The positive cable should be replaced first and then the negative cable. This is done in reverse of way they are removed. He instructs correctly regarding removing the cables (Neg, then Pos.), but errs in stating "Neg. & Pos. for replacing them.

  • That doesn't really make sense to me. Isn't the negative always first because it is the ground therefore reducing your chance of electrocution. That being said take the positive(Power supply) off first then the negative(Ground) before you take the battery out. Then connect the Negative first followed by the positive to complete the task.

  • NO!!

The Ground has nothing to do with electrocution.

You must do as "theoriginalCEWQ" said.

The danger is when your wrench is attached to the POS terminal with the NEG gound still connected you can easily bump any metal (and grounded) surface of the car. This can be very dangerous! You will not be electrocuted but you can get burned badly and due to the chemicals you can even go blind!!

Which reminds me always wear eye protection.

    Hope this clears it up.

  • have you ever accidently dropped a wrench/metal tool on the battery? i did ONCE, na dholy shit it scared me to death. i dropped my wrench on my buddy's rx7 battery, and it hit both terminals, and shot up and out about 50 feet.

it was crazy. and DID YOU KNOW, if you EVER touch any metal between both terminals that it will fry in a matter of milliseconds? burning your hand clear to the bone? (True story) google it.

  • Never EVER grab a battery the same way that he did if it's cracked or bulging. If it breaks you can get burned by the acid inside of it. If you can, try to get a battery puller or make a battery puller if you see that the case is cracking or bulging.

  • true but battery acid will not hurt you straight away, you will have about 5-10 mins to wash it off before it takes affect

  • chunky: I hear what your saying however not everyone knows this basic stuff. you have to be taught even the most simpy tasks in life. I'm sure you were taught somewhere along the way .probably as a kid by ur father. if you figured it out on ur own well then cool...you're smarter than the average bear. I know I taught myself how to play guitar and it's easy to me but a lot of folks find it hard.

btw calling things homo is very rude and homophobic!!

  • Self taught from water pump to starter motor to maufacturing pyrotechnics all the way to fixing my brother's beard trimmer. No father required. Good on you for guitar, that's more difficult than a head gasket. Sorry about the homo comment, but this is so gay.

  • Why is this so gay? Seems like a simple concept to you. Im 25 and I wasnt sure of the exact way to change my truck battery. I didnt want to take the chance of getting shocked. I didnt grow up with a father or any other mechanic in the family who knew how to do this stuff. I didnt get my first car until I was 20. However, I am good at disassembling/reassembling any type of weapon. Be it a simple beretta to a mark-19 the military uses. I self taught myself all of that.

  • I'm very nearly the same age as you, I similarly had no father figure at those formative years and seriously, if you had to watch this, you shouldn't be trusted unsupervised around live ammunition.

I don't understand what you people find so hard to understand. Its a battery for god's sake.

  • I highly doubt you are close to my age. Your name alone shows your maturity level. Then again you do come off as a greasemonkey.

  • I am in fact fractionally older than you at 27 years of age. What exactly is it that makes me "come off as a greasemonkey" or is this just a projection of your frustration at your own miserable failure at such a simple task?

  • @roxburynight yeah but which comment are you referring to?

  • stop being such a fag

  • shannon, chunky just thinks he's better than everyone else. This is a losing battle. His type are the ones who come online and can proclaim they are better than most in every single task that is out there.

  • Should you use baking soda to clean battery terminals connections?

  • that's what i did for my ford escort after taking my corroded/cracked duralast battery out.

(and i cleaned it up, and put a optima yellow top in)

  • second!

  • first
