Ey bro great vids u got here! Made me laugh, at the same time i feel like you were pointing out the mayor problems the newbies may have at the start. Tips: Maybe you should lower ur background music a little bit more, to make ur voice sound more clear (People may have bad sound on pc, headphones sucks and people with hard of hearing) like me lol. I had to turn up the volum but at the same time, background music was disturbing ur voice - never the less, i enjoyed ur vids! rock on
There are a ton of great responses, and I apologize if I can't reply to all them -- been working hard at film school and I don't spend too much time on YouTube. Whenever I'm on the computer, I'm either editing, or on Facebook haha. For all you've watched my videos, thanks so much for checking them out! I made this video back when I was a senior in high school (I am now a junior in college), so I was basically still a kid when I made this...again, I do appreciate all of your feedback!
I just bought my first car which is a manual ive got my licence but i have trouble like you said i always take the clutch off too fast and its awkward cause australia you have the display P plates for the first 3 years of having your licence so people know i can drive they are just like wtf :\ when i keep stalling aghh
I certainly had no idea on what to expect to see, but this way great! In Europe it is not allowed to drive a manual if you have learned to drive in an automatic only. Interesting to see using the clutch and shifter explained like that, while to me - as you yet mentioned it will become - it is second nature.
This was one of the most well done videos I've found on here... let alone an instructional one. Well produced, good instruction, funny but not too cute, and most importantly, good, specific information. Thanks Gem. Gravitas.
@SirWalshy1995 You want to add gas when you're letting the clutch out to upshift in order to keep the engine speed the same. When downshifting, it is recommended to give just a blip of gas so that the clutch can engage with the engine revving a bit. If you do not give some gas, the clutch will clunk with the engine. It's not bad for the car, but it's avoidable. Hope this helps!
@SirWalshy1995 well when you let go the clutch and you fell your moving a litle bit you then add a litle gas and when you are switching gear its the same thing first let go the clutch slowly than add gas :D its easy youl see im on the 24 lesson (europe)
very instructive video. I was so scared about driving, and not anymore. I am about to take the first lesson on how to drive and now I am more confident. Thanks.
A caption in the video says that downshifting while going uphill is a good idea. Jeremy Clarkson, during a Top Gear tractor-trailer race, seems to be leading in the race, but then: "Unfortunately in all the excitement, I forgot to change down for the steep hill. No! No! It's dying on me. No! No! No!" The tractor-trailer stalls because it's in too high of a gear going uphill.
awesome video man, very well done I'm impressed. You go from humor to seriousness about driving the car and the basics. You have a good voice and some awesome production skills. great job.
Gem- have you showed people how to brake? I mean I dont remember you saying that you have to press the clutch fully in the end of braking. Its important- otherwise the engine is gonna stop
I'm not really clear on the slowing down part of manual transmissions. Say you're going 50 in 5th and a light turns red. How would you slow down? Do you just press the brake in and put it into neutral until you stop the vehicle at the light? Or is there more to it than that?
@LivinInFuture Just brake and stay in whichever gear you're already in. Be aware of when your engine speed gets close to idle but watch the road. Then push in the clutch, shift to neutral, and let out the clutch. When you do all that, you're still on the brake until you come to a stop.
Shifting to neutral as soon as you brake gives you more work, if that light turns green on you. Then your hands and feet get busy shifting the car back in gear instead of just pushing the gas.
@chunkyazian That actually makes a lot of sense. So, if you slowed down to like 40 from 50 you'd just downshift after the light turns green and get on the gas?
@LivinInFuture Depending on the weight of your car (plus passengers), hill, temperature, air density, and array of factors, your engine's response varies. Just step on the gas and see what the car does. If it doesn't accelerate as hard as you like it to, downshift.
Here, if you pass your driving test in an automatic you're not allowed drive a manual so most drivers tend to learn to drive in a manual when they're first learning.
It's a good skill to have, for one thing the clutch allows some pretty fine control of the car at low speeds when an auto just wants to lurch forward.
We're also specifically taught to use the gearbox to slow the car as much as possible, since it saves on petrol. If someone hits you, it's their fault for not paying attention.
Never remove this video from youtube...... thanks bro.. ummm quickie question... is it OK to start driving off in 2nd gear if you are on a decline hill? or any tips on slow pace up hill driving?
@Rebo8221 2nd gear downhill starts are fine, put it in gear, let it roll, then clutch out. Are you asking about how to start uphill or just driving slowly?
@chunkyazian starting uphill, i take my time and clutch out.... but it just cuts off.... i give enough gas i even let the rpm hit 3000 at one time the clutch would engage, i roll foward, "vroomm" and cuts off.... its killing my confidence... what am i doing wrong?
@Rebo8221 Stalling simply means clutching out too soon. Also, 1.5k is plenty for steep hill; 3k is abusive.
With the parking brake set, clutch out to the friction point w/o gas. Then ease into the gas while easing out the clutch to keep your rev in check. Do it slowly until you feel the car pulling against the parking brake. Then hold your foot still and release the parking brake. The car should go up hill at that point. Get to a walking pace before clutching out completely.
@chunkyazian as you say its abusive i feel bad :( lol, thanks a lot i wrote down what you said i'm going to try it now :):):) thanks a ton... i was getting a bit annoyed i think thats why i revved it to 3k
This video is official bro..interesting n taught me sumtin & hilarious inda end..u kno w@ helps??..the fact that ur doing all this in a manual 3 series..I want a manual 5 series n then eventually an Aston Martin v12 vantage so I must learn this
thanks buddy really helped me!!!!!! really explaining especially the engagement point coz my car doesn't even show the RPMs it hasn't got a tachometer and it really made it hard to learn but you...
THANK YOU for explaining the basics of manual transmission driving to me! You were clear and concise, and had a few laughs on the way. Cheers bro, clearly the BEST video about this out on youtube!
dude, honestly u really do have the best video on youtube. amazing job!! im really afraid of braking. wud it be safe to just drop the car in neutral with no prior downshifting and brake? or wud it over kill the rpm? thanks man!
@vietboyz08 Generally, slow enough that you don't stall, but fast enough that you don't let the engine rev wildly. In short, it depends on how much gas you're adding after you get to the friction point. And how much gas you add depends on how steep of a hill you're trying to climb. It's a vague answer, but there's no point explaining this in great detail because each car behaves differently, what works on mine won't work on yours. So get out there and bond with your car.
You know... when you're making a tutorial video, it's better to not have any sort of profanity in it. Just makes it unprofessional, although you wanted to be. other than that good video.
Best video on how to drive a manual shift, its very explanatory and i just learnt something new from your video "leave the clutch slowly and when u feel the engagement point add the gas", thanks for this lesson.
Yeah, I am having to learn stick at 23 b/c I chose a 2011 335i Coupe b/c I got a good deal on it that I couldn't leave behind... it was either the manual 335i Coupe or a 328 with hardly any options... Yet, my first day driving stick was HORRIBLE... do you guys think I made the right choice?
hey gem i gotta question about stopping, say your in 4th or 5th gear and you need to brake immediately for some reason like somebody cut you off what do you do?? do you just put the handbrake up?
so when stopping at the light do you have to switch to neutral before you come to a complete stop or can you brake in 2nd to a stop then neutral? Also can you hold the brake while switching gears?
ahhh im still looking how to get the car to slow down a bit "not" a complete stop just slow enough for the traffic and get back to driving, do I need to get the gear lower when just slowing down a bit???? or neutral?? somebody???
hey broo! im guessing ur filipino? ahha if u are that makes us kababayans.. anyways thx for the vid mang.. i havent drove manual for years.. (still back at pinas) since i got here its always auto.. but going to drive manual now and ur guide helps a lot for me to remember.. i guess i juz need to practice.. btw u just didnt press the gas while the car is off didnt u? if ur car is manual ur gonna flood ur engine.. (engine might run cuz of it) and while parking i would put the gear on first =]
@katasinEX whoops corrections *engine might NOT run* and the parking if ur facing up i would put it on first gear, and if facing down put it on reverse
Awesome video. I need to learn how to drive a stick to make another instructional video on how to install fuel rails lol...so, this will help me a lot :D
your videos were much better, for one you actually knew what you were talking about. Not like "Yeah the clutch is a pedal on your floorboard and an automatic car/truck does not have a clutch." lol
one question! so when i am going to brake i press the clutch all the way down then the brake and then i shift to first? or do i put it in neutral and then when i start moving again shift it to first?? thanks
@TheJgonzalez7 well it doesn't really matter u put it on 1st gear or neutral when u hav pressed the clutch and stoped the car u can always put it directly on 1st and start
hey i have a question... when ur driving very slowly in a packed parking lot how do u balance the clutch and gas is it like u just keep the clutch in while giving it gas to move?
Great video, absolutely perfect technique, except for the comment about shifting to first gear on the fly. It isn't necessary if you don't go near San Francisco. Make a turn in 2nd or 3rd gear to a street with a steep uphill and certain engines simply cannot get the car uphill without a going back to first
this was probably the best video on youtube BY FAR... No one else really had a part on anything about "the engagement point". this is what really helped me out. thanks bro
simply briilliant tutorial though ur creativity and insight was helpful, cuz im thinking bout buying a stick......at first i wasn't sure this was an actual tutuorial though lol but after i saw wat was really good and it was really really helpful thanx brah
to get into 1st gear do u hold the gas in one spot as you slowly let off the clutch or do u keep giving more and more gas as u let go of the clutch???
@rtisunit Yes, What you want to do is find your rpm sweet spot and hold it there until you feel the clutch grab. You'll literally feel it in your pedal and in your butt when it happens. From there you can basically drop the clutch because at that point it's already synched up with the engine's flywheel, so nothing will jerk. The thing you never want to do is ACCELERATE as the clutch is still slipping doing so will prevent it from synching up with the flywheel and you'll just add a ton of wear.
@512482 Thanks for the complements; I remember though when I was first learning how to drive manual back in '08 , his video was actually the first one I watched. I learned a lot from him as well, so be sure to take tips from anyone who has them. He did a great job on his piece.
Dang. This is easy. I learned to drive a stick by watching my dad. But my dad drives a 18sp semi. Its pretty much the same. But higher rpms. And u dont have to use the clutch.

Rebo8221 10 months ago
@Rebo8221 Stalling simply means clutching out too soon. Also, 1.5k is plenty for steep hill; 3k is abusive.
With the parking brake set, clutch out to the friction point w/o gas. Then ease into the gas while easing out the clutch to keep your rev in check. Do it slowly until you feel the car pulling against the parking brake. Then hold your foot still and release the parking brake. The car should go up hill at that point. Get to a walking pace before clutching out completely.

so when stopping at the light do you have to switch to neutral before you come to a complete stop or can you brake in 2nd to a stop then neutral? Also can you hold the brake while switching gears?

"you just told me to stall!" lmao
airsoftbro123 1 year ago
ahhh im still looking how to get the car to slow down a bit "not" a complete stop just slow enough for the traffic and get back to driving, do I need to get the gear lower when just slowing down a bit???? or neutral?? somebody???

hey broo! im guessing ur filipino? ahha if u are that makes us kababayans.. anyways thx for the vid mang.. i havent drove manual for years.. (still back at pinas) since i got here its always auto.. but going to drive manual now and ur guide helps a lot for me to remember.. i guess i juz need to practice.. btw u just didnt press the gas while the car is off didnt u? if ur car is manual ur gonna flood ur engine.. (engine might run cuz of it) and while parking i would put the gear on first =]
katasinEX 1 year ago
@katasinEX whoops corrections *engine might NOT run* and the parking if ur facing up i would put it on first gear, and if facing down put it on reverse
katasinEX 1 year ago
nicely done man =)

your videos were much better, for one you actually knew what you were talking about. Not like "Yeah the clutch is a pedal on your floorboard and an automatic car/truck does not have a clutch." lol
Smigjo 1 year ago
one question! so when i am going to brake i press the clutch all the way down then the brake and then i shift to first? or do i put it in neutral and then when i start moving again shift it to first?? thanks
TheJgonzalez7 1 year ago
@TheJgonzalez7 well it doesn't really matter u put it on 1st gear or neutral when u hav pressed the clutch and stoped the car u can always put it directly on 1st and start

nice video about driving. but i think you forgot to tell " to let go of the clutch when the car is fully moving in first gear. dont let it burn.
TheThewho123 1 year ago
hey i have a question... when ur driving very slowly in a packed parking lot how do u balance the clutch and gas is it like u just keep the clutch in while giving it gas to move?
chosunese 1 year ago
lol i think i have a crush on u now but thanks for that lesson. i learned alot
kstev011 1 year ago
Great video, absolutely perfect technique, except for the comment about shifting to first gear on the fly. It isn't necessary if you don't go near San Francisco. Make a turn in 2nd or 3rd gear to a street with a steep uphill and certain engines simply cannot get the car uphill without a going back to first

to get into 1st gear do u hold the gas in one spot as you slowly let off the clutch or do u keep giving more and more gas as u let go of the clutch???
rtisunit 1 year ago

@512482 Loool I saw that stupid one he show off too much
bloodyangel5463 10 months ago
Dang. This is easy. I learned to drive a stick by watching my dad. But my dad drives a 18sp semi. Its pretty much the same. But higher rpms. And u dont have to use the clutch.

Faggots, why do you keep talking about STICKS... its called manual, its a manual transmission car, fucking fish heads..
changoskillz 1 year ago
@changoskillz
You can use both terms.. It means the same thing.
Stick is just more of a slang word for manual. You don't have to get all mad.
snowww43 1 year ago
@changoskillz You know what I mean; calling it a stick doesn't make it something else regardless. It's all good though
