You can actually fix it if it's at a level you have beaten already. Just press Start and then Select to exit the level.

You can use this glitch to your advantage. If you change your position a bit and eat the apple a tenth of a second before the power-up hits Mario, the game will lock up while the coin counter increases at an extremely rapid pace. Takes about 3.5 minutes to get 99 lives.

Just make sure to do it on a level you've already beaten; that way you can press Start and then Select to leave the stage once it's frozen.

Not a glitch, this is a game freeze. Glitches are tricks you use while playing the game to accomplish things the game developer never intended the player to. Such as Fly with the cape and change directions.
