What can you say about a classic. The Marx brothers movies are close to 75 years old and they're still watched, still funny, and show off some amazingly unique and talented comedians. I watched Abbot & Costello and the Marx Brothers movies when I was a kid in the late 1960's and early 1970's many times when they showed up on Saturday or Sunday matinee movies on television. Thanks to the poster for the reminder about these terrific talented people.
Written by Bill Marx (Harpo's son) on harposplace: Watch him in A Day At The Races when he's playing his piano solo - it says a lot about him.
He's as relaxed as can be, How can I tell? Watch him hear a little flute solo that takes him by surprise - he looks up, startled, without missing a beat. Pleased by the surprise, he smiles that sly grin of his, and looks back at the piano. He didn't know the flute solo was coming because he'd never heard it before. Because he never rehearsed. 1:29
I have a friend who's got a 96-year-old lady friend in LA, a former casting director. She used to have open house parties every Sunday at her house and Chico would come and play. She said they all used to fall down laughing at him. I always adored Harpo. He adopted five children; he said he wanted to see a little head at every window when he came home in the evening.
As soon as Harpo takes the bench, I crack up hugely because I know what's coming! The serious scowl, dramatic piece, then piano bits going up as his hat jams down, everything hits the deck... and Harpo then takes us to heaven. So damn good.
maybe that is the reason.. they didn't need to take it too seriously and they sustained their playfulness and kind of took contact to their "audience" :)
They were such great talents. Like a beautiful whirlwind of stratospheric talent which has not been equaled or even come near to since. I wonder if people back then knew how lucky they were to have entertainers of this caliber. If only they could see what it's come to these days.
I'd chop off my ears and nose to play the piano like Chico or the harp like Harpo. The ability to express so beautifully what's in one's soul is such a huge gift; it's the closest you can get to truly knowing someone and being known. There's no other way to put it, other than it being a sublime sharing of the most intimate part of a person...I don't know how this jaded and common generation survives, being illiterate toward that kind of language.
Unbelievable talent

What is it that Harpo first starts playing? You know, before he killed the piano and ripped out its heart? lol I feel silly for not remembering it...

These guys would blow away most popular musicians of today, and music was a sideline for them. They were primarily comedians
