am scared, lol 1st time user of heat gun, followed this while heatgunning & one blue cap started moving around then i heard a loud pop near the network & av ports... have i messed it up?
Friend found a 360 in the dumpster. 2006/5 manf. date.... an oldie... someone used fucking caulk it looks like instead of real thermal paste... lmao... That explained the overheating issue. Cleaned it up... replaced thermal paste... it fired up for about 5 minutes, Graphics went fuzzy/distorted, then no video/audio.... followed the process exactly the same (went a little longer on top part with the high heat setting), put on some fresh Artic silver.... fired right up.
To good job bro really nice work! Lol I got a xbox360 slim works fine just came across your video was lookin to fix my ps3 ylod Tomarrow with the same heat gun !! =)
This is a good practical tut. My only suggestion would be cleaning the components with denatured alcohol. Goo-gone or citrus based cleaners have organic compounds that break down @ high heat and the residue can inhibit heat transference.
Bro It Really worked!! I did it the first time 30 seconds on each chip, but after 1 month i got the 3 RLOD, i follwe this tutorial and I got back working!!!
IMHO it might be better not move heat gun rapidly from one chip to another, but heat them sequentially from greater distance i.e. move to next after finish with previous.
My xbox is 4 yrs old and i just had 2 red lights. it would come on and the cd wouldnt even eject. I had code 0013 and followed your vid and used same heat gun....worked flawless first try! Thanks!
@hunter24574 No! Ceramic based thermal compound does not conduct heat well enough. Use silver based only. However unlike a previous comment suggested, only apply AFTER the system has cooled or else you may crush the hot solder balls and potentially cause a short circuit, basically making your xbox permanently broken. Dont touch the system at all while reflowing or cooling
This is a REALLY bad idea. Not only is the heat EXCESSIVE, there is NO way that CONVECTION is a substitute for RADIATED Infra-RED at the low-temp T-junction of LEAD-FREE solder, but you are usually dealing with a high amount of impurities like oxidation or rust. There is NO chance heat is "applied evenly" when you are using 3 times too high heat, at many times the airflow., by shaky hand...Sorry, but just find a good franchise that will do it right.
After u do this get some arctic silver 5 and apply it to the GPU and CPU then put the heats sinks on then let it cool down for 15 mins and ur good 2 go B)
1 thing u forgot to mention to pll is when u finished the reflow u then need to reapply the thermal paste to the 2 chips and heatsinks . laos 1 part i didnt c in ur video is on the 4 black ic units things on the back mine had 4 sponge things on them urs didnt do i need these
I did this and it made my Xbox 360 work for about a month, it got rrod today as soon as I activated my 1 month Xbox live bumer..... I'm in the process of the same progress as I type hopefully it'll fix it again
@PeanutButerJellyTim1 Well I was going to type some tips in response to your post but ran out of characters, so I edited the video's description at the bottom to include some information on how to make this fix last longer, perhaps permanently (and i've had many that have been permanent after only 1 reflow)
@dazza723 the answer to this question, as well as "which errors does this work on" and several other questions, are all found in the video's description...dunno why I cant get people to read it!
@TheNinjahHD Yes, the reason of all these errors in 99% is a problem with GPU's connections. This will fix it (but in most cases this fix is temporary).
Sooo i did this 2 months ago and today i got the gpu failed on me as i was playing mw3 :( looks like i will be buying another heat gun to refix it again....booooo im missing my mw3
@darkdragonslaye2007 No, just because a heatgun looks like a hairdryer doesnt mean it is. Hair dryers dont get near hot enough to melt the solder, but if you tried to use a heatgun on your scalp you'd set your hair on fire!
Thanks bro I've been having issue's with my jtag over and over and over it really sucks. I'm going to walmart asap and buying a heat gun thanks for the video bro I look forward to modding again soon.
just a tip, all those things that look like batteries can explode and ruin the board if subjected to too much heat, you should realy cover them up with aluminum foil (which reflects heat) before you do this process. obviously it went fine for him, and you won't always have an issue, but it's a possibility that you should really cover since you could do the reflow right, but a capacitor could burst in the process and ruin the whole board
let me get this straight...you took it apart and took off all the thermal paste. heated it up and put it back together without any more thermal paste and it worked? so it is the same thing as letting in run for a bit without the fans not running but you cleaned off the paste?
@djesteem01 No, it isn't. Using the traditional "Overheat" method you have described only works for a short time.
The Xbox 360 is designed to RROD2 when the console gets too hot. When the RROD2 gets too hot, the console will almost completely shut down, so it cannot get any hotter. This keeps the 360 from getting to heats that will actually remelt the solder or damage other parts, re-flowing the 360 correctly. Therefore, the "Overheat" method doesn't get the job done. This method does.
Thank you WOOLY! Just fixed my own RRODed box, first try, using your video. If I was not a broke graduate student I would donate heavily to your cause. Maybe some day when I'm rich (lol).
@aero405 heh well actually the cool thing about bitcoins is they allow you to transfer even a fraction of a cent and i'll take any amount i can get :) In fact if you'd like you could go to dailybitcoins (dot) org and just put in my address and it'll send me some free!
@xxW00LYxx Something that would help and reduce the time you'd need to spend with the heatgun on is surround the GPU, CPU, RAM etc. with some tinfoil, it will also almost completely remove the risk of melting plastic or anything, and I would like it if you did a Reball tut as that is a more perminant fix. Also, I was wondering if you could repair my RROD Jtag if I sent it to you.
ever heard of no red color when using hd component hook ups? red works on composite so im gonna try this and hope it works. btw ive double triple checked the connections & tried multiple av/ inputs on the tv. tried new cable as well. cant find anything at all on the internet about this single issue
I went out and bought the same eat gun from home depot for ~$25 and followed his directions. Everything works just fine now! I had the same 0102 error an now it works like a charm. I just wanted to say thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars instead PF buying a new box! Before you buy a new box try this it worked for me!
@Sqwince23 Glad you and others have been successful with my repair! Since I saved you some money, if you use Bitcoins, why not consider donating a few 1GfMWhREmpYaYZELJ1ruyi3ymnSQqoomat
@xxW00LYxx i done exacly you showed here but after turning the xbox on it shoes 3 red lights and the fan goes off plus dvd drive dont even eject normaly it dosent happen but after runing this process my xbox is complete dead now

I use the same heatgun and same procedure..... almost. You should have this heatgun on low the whole time. Its still hot enough to melt the solder balls.
@TheIronman268 True. The low setting on the Wagner HT1000 is 750 degrees while high is 100 degrees. I use a Chicago Electric Power Tools Proffesional Heat Gun that allows you to achieve 12 temperatures. And it cost only $6 more than the Wagner HT1000. People should look up stuff before buying lol. But it does the job, so I guess the wagner is alright.
@abvant either or joking, or just that that slow. MS has already pretty much fixed redring, when they made jasper which was released dec 2008. And then the slims which are even better.
@iHasModsHD If you want your jtag to work for a few years,, dont ever do these cheap youtube fixes, such as, penny tricks, towel trick, overheat trick, and fan trick, and heatgun fix. while heat gun will usually fix a console, its best to send it to a pro, i recommend you send your jtag to get reball next time its fails.
@WeirdJerz3y i did the heat gun and heat gun is not a cheap trick it is a FIX ..mine has been working for a looooong time thanks to fixinga it! i suggest this method!
Nice video.. im a bit worried about the bottom memory chips, you had no support in making sure the bottom chips dont peel of when u heat the board...
Also, notice how long it took for the xbox to start up that time?? You actually still have a problem with one of your memory chips.. luckily, (been an ex-microsoft repairer) the 8 chips on the board have a system where if one chip isnt working properly it will disable it!!! reheat the bottom chips with "no clean flux"
Great tutorial!!! I This xbox360 repair technique worked like a charm for me. I have used my repaired xbox360 for over a month now on a daily basis and have not had any problems. (I did go ahead and replace the X-clamps at the same time, but I believe my console would be working just the same had I used this technique only.) Thanks a million!!!
you need to overheat your board once if you havent yet.. do this by removing the fans or stopping the rear fans.
you also may need to use "silver" thermal paste, or run direct 12volt into the fan (red and green together) and ground the black and blue, each to an adjustable trimpot 200ohms first..
Hi can i ask i just did this to one of my consoles and the PCB i guess bubbled and abit of the coating on the CPU and GPU bubbled too. I took the heat gun off and the bubble on the PCB went but on the CPU and GPU it's still there. I put it on max (600 degrees for me) and didn't keep in one place or was too close. Has this done any damage?
I just watched this video and did the same. it worked first try and its been a couple days so im keeping my fingers crossed. thank you for the tutorial.
@lindley2008 I know the newer heatsinks are better. That's my reasoning for replacing the first gen one. The heatgun method didn't revive it, tried it 3 times with no difference. The GPU heatsink barely gets above warm to the touch so i'm pretty sure it's probably down for the count anyway.
this gave me read ring again (different error code) then a bricked motherboard. i did it on high for 4 minutes. im not a genius but should you just heat up the chip that actually has the problem. im not saying this doesnt work...im just curious.
i had the ylod on ps3 and i did reflow and it only worked for like a month so when i did it to my xbox i did not have high hope for it to last but its lasted nearly a year!
hello just wanted to leave u a comment thanks very much for uploading this video u helped me with all the spicifixs of reflowing worked on my sister xbox 1 try and was also my first time doing a reflow thanks once again
@nwhite1996 The heatsink shouldn't matter, its the exact same as the first gen heatsink only theres a heatpipe coming out of the side of it to the smaller heatsink. I've had it working in the past with the newer heatsink before it got the 0020 error, so that can't be it.
I have a first gen xenon with the 0020 error code on it. I swapped the first gen heatsink for the dual heatsink. The x-clamp fix has already been applied too, which fixed it for a month in the past and then I got stuck with this 0020 error. So far I tried heatgunning it twice but still no different. First attempt; pre-heated bottom for 2 min at 250C (or 482F) then heat the topside like instructed for 4 minutes at 450C (or 842F) 2nd attempt same thing only for 6min instead, also no change.
I'm about 2 attempt my first reflow on my 360 which has the RROD 0102. Problem is, this video is just 1of many on youtube showing a reflow. Many of them seem legit and knowledgeable on the subject. Yet they all have different ways of doing it. Some just do one side, some cover components, some do it for 1 min each side, some 5 min. I've tried a few things to fix the problem with no success. This will probably b my final attempt and it seems to be a permanent one. I just want to do it right.
thanks so much, this method got my xbox working again and i feel much better about it knowing i re-flowed it rather than the noobie towel method.
my friend uses an oven set to 300*c for 10 mins to do this same repair for a certain type of HP printer so once i knew re-flowing was possible i went ahead and did it.
ok guys let me set you stright you use the heat gun in more than one place so you dont damage. cant heat to fast plus i might take care of future problems..why open it again?? the towel trick just messes with the heat sensor so it dont work right letting ur xbox turn on not fixing the problem just killin ur sys lmfao know it all.repair kits come with what you need to keep heatsinks stright on chips.when done with heat gun use what you find here--> google xbrdepot.8 yrs in the computer game peace
This does indeed work. Have to be careful to direct the heat in exactly the right places though. Under doing it is better than overdoing it for obvious reasons so take what you WANT to do and stop short of that. Anyway... My system went rrod a few weeks ago. It was a 1st gen 360 purchased on release date. Made it all the way to 2011 with no rrod which is amazing to me ! AND IT"S NOW BACK IN ACTION =)
Doesnt this take care of all the micro fractures in the soder. Also would this fix the 2 ring error the over heat error. Because i heard that the gpu and cpu get moved around and the heat sinks dont sit on them right??
@smarttdiablo see if your drive ejects if not then you have shorted the board with the heatsink this normally happens if you only used one washer on the top of the board, or sometimes if you have not used one set of nylon washers
@nuttanic The drive was broken whe i bought it. The Nylon washers are on the board and the metal ones on the heatsinks. I tried different power cords for it but it still does not heat. I connect it to the power and the light is orange when i turn it on it does not turn green but the 3 red lights come up.
@quofishing Oh that's a good idea, except for the fact that people don't want to spend more than the cost of a new console to repair a broken one. Derp
@emerybryant not quite einstein, the towel trick doesn't get hot enough to melt the solder and is the system itself generating the heat. Not safe. This method does get hot enough to melt the solder and is from an external heat source that is being targeted to individual components.
@xxW00LYxx Just wondering if you could offer me some help. I have an xbox that has rrod. I have noticed that when I have the dvd rom plugged in the sata port, the heatsinks stay cold but when I unplug the dvd rom, they heat up. Any ideas?
@1stGenerationGamer it will fuck up your board you need to moniter temps and using a joyv reball is the only reliable way so utter crap here mate watch the vid on reball joyv
@TakeTwoGameShop My heatgun is 750*F low 1000 high. I've never actually measured the surface temp. I have a thermocouple but since this heating profile works for me I've figured why potentially mess one up (or my thermocouple) if it works. I am interested to find out though so I guess I'll have to get back to you :)
@CarlospuAlmeida Oh that's a good idea, let me spend more than the price of a 360 to buy a machine to fix my 360. This repair can be permanent if done right, and even more so if flux is used. Besides, many rework stations are basically heatguns anyway, they both blow hot air
Have you ever tried fixing a 360 with error code 0020? I've performed this heat gun method on a Falcon and it worked tremendously great, but when I tried it on a Zephyr model (no glue holding the GPU to the mobo). I was not sure what the previous error code was, but now all I'm getting is error 0020. My father says that I had probably shorted something or bridged a connection under the gpu. Took a closer look and it seems the gpu is slightly out of place. What do you think I should try?
Oh, one last thing, I have the Elite that came with the upgraded heat sink....does NOT fix the RROD :-( There is a small amount of fluid in the tube that runs up to the piggyback heat exchanger....right where the copper tube comes out of the main heat sink, the fluid had blown out and was all over the motherboard and you could see where it had all leaked out and fried to the heat sink. It DOES remove the heat but it still isn't enough. Its tough with the current design to clear the DVD drive.

@abvant either or joking, or just that that slow. MS has already pretty much fixed redring, when they made jasper which was released dec 2008. And then the slims which are even better.

i got e74 on my jtag and i did towel trick and it actually works but for a certain amount of time........
iHasModsHD 7 months ago
@iHasModsHD If you want your jtag to work for a few years,, dont ever do these cheap youtube fixes, such as, penny tricks, towel trick, overheat trick, and fan trick, and heatgun fix. while heat gun will usually fix a console, its best to send it to a pro, i recommend you send your jtag to get reball next time its fails.
WeirdJerz3y 5 months ago
@WeirdJerz3y i did the heat gun and heat gun is not a cheap trick it is a FIX ..mine has been working for a looooong time thanks to fixinga it! i suggest this method!

@Skatrman32 yes you can, i have done this to a few xboxs that already have the xclamp fix done to them.

Fantastic video. Worked like a charm first time on an Xbox 360 Elite. Many thanks. Now off to try it on my second faulty machine.

did thermal paste repair, it works for a minute then heatsink over cpu overheats an i get 2 flashing lights on left side, what is causing it
Randypants713 7 months ago in playlist fabo
@Randypants713
you need to overheat your board once if you havent yet.. do this by removing the fans or stopping the rear fans.
you also may need to use "silver" thermal paste, or run direct 12volt into the fan (red and green together) and ground the black and blue, each to an adjustable trimpot 200ohms first..
djmod101 7 months ago
@Randypants713 Make sure the heatsinks are touching the chips

Hi can i ask i just did this to one of my consoles and the PCB i guess bubbled and abit of the coating on the CPU and GPU bubbled too. I took the heat gun off and the bubble on the PCB went but on the CPU and GPU it's still there. I put it on max (600 degrees for me) and didn't keep in one place or was too close. Has this done any damage?
Please Reply ASAP!

will this method work if i have the E 75 on my xbox. they say to reflow the ics chip. will it work though? or is there another solution?

i did the reflow on my xbox with code 0102 and did the x clamp fix. it works perfectly now. thank you very much.
davedingobeast 8 months ago
@lindley2008 I know the newer heatsinks are better. That's my reasoning for replacing the first gen one. The heatgun method didn't revive it, tried it 3 times with no difference. The GPU heatsink barely gets above warm to the touch so i'm pretty sure it's probably down for the count anyway.
sandrock1000 8 months ago
this gave me read ring again (different error code) then a bricked motherboard. i did it on high for 4 minutes. im not a genius but should you just heat up the chip that actually has the problem. im not saying this doesnt work...im just curious.

I followed this and my Xbox is now DEAD.

how important is it to use the heatgun before adding the thermal paste to the proccessors?
theBCstomp 9 months ago
@nwhite1996 The heatsink shouldn't matter, its the exact same as the first gen heatsink only theres a heatpipe coming out of the side of it to the smaller heatsink. I've had it working in the past with the newer heatsink before it got the 0020 error, so that can't be it.
sandrock1000 9 months ago
@sandrock1000
The new heatsinks cool the xbox much better than the first gen heatsinks, however the heatsinks will not directly cause the problem.
lindley2008 8 months ago
I have a first gen xenon with the 0020 error code on it. I swapped the first gen heatsink for the dual heatsink. The x-clamp fix has already been applied too, which fixed it for a month in the past and then I got stuck with this 0020 error. So far I tried heatgunning it twice but still no different. First attempt; pre-heated bottom for 2 min at 250C (or 482F) then heat the topside like instructed for 4 minutes at 450C (or 842F) 2nd attempt same thing only for 6min instead, also no change.
sandrock1000 9 months ago
@sandrock1000 its because you are using the wrong kind of heatsink for your xbox which results in 0020 error
nwhite1996 9 months ago
you also left out the application of thermal paste back to the GPU and CPU.
i may try this myself since mine has been freezing up on me..
Flyingwigs 10 months ago
I'm about 2 attempt my first reflow on my 360 which has the RROD 0102. Problem is, this video is just 1of many on youtube showing a reflow. Many of them seem legit and knowledgeable on the subject. Yet they all have different ways of doing it. Some just do one side, some cover components, some do it for 1 min each side, some 5 min. I've tried a few things to fix the problem with no success. This will probably b my final attempt and it seems to be a permanent one. I just want to do it right.

thanks so much, this method got my xbox working again and i feel much better about it knowing i re-flowed it rather than the noobie towel method.
my friend uses an oven set to 300*c for 10 mins to do this same repair for a certain type of HP printer so once i knew re-flowing was possible i went ahead and did it.
thanks again!

im gonna try this tomorow but i already x clamps fixed my jtag so can i use a hot hair dryer and just not take it apart but heat the south bridge?
OGMxOWNER 10 months ago
@OGMxOWNER
no a hair dryer gets no where near hot enough
you need something that can get about 1000F
almost all hair dryers only go to 140F
which is why you need a heatgun

ok guys let me set you stright you use the heat gun in more than one place so you dont damage. cant heat to fast plus i might take care of future problems..why open it again?? the towel trick just messes with the heat sensor so it dont work right letting ur xbox turn on not fixing the problem just killin ur sys lmfao know it all.repair kits come with what you need to keep heatsinks stright on chips.when done with heat gun use what you find here--> google xbrdepot.8 yrs in the computer game peace
hammerjangles 10 months ago
This does indeed work. Have to be careful to direct the heat in exactly the right places though. Under doing it is better than overdoing it for obvious reasons so take what you WANT to do and stop short of that. Anyway... My system went rrod a few weeks ago. It was a 1st gen 360 purchased on release date. Made it all the way to 2011 with no rrod which is amazing to me ! AND IT"S NOW BACK IN ACTION =)

Why do you re heat other components other than the GPU? The cpu and chips dont need re heating
phillthemenace 11 months ago
Doesnt this take care of all the micro fractures in the soder. Also would this fix the 2 ring error the over heat error. Because i heard that the gpu and cpu get moved around and the heat sinks dont sit on them right??

smarttdiablo 11 months ago
@smarttdiablo see if your drive ejects if not then you have shorted the board with the heatsink this normally happens if you only used one washer on the top of the board, or sometimes if you have not used one set of nylon washers
nuttanic 11 months ago
@nuttanic
I used 1 nylon and 1 metal on each screw
smarttdiablo 11 months ago
@nuttanic
Is there a way to fix it?
smarttdiablo 11 months ago
@smarttdiablo
does the drive open or not? are both washers on the same side as the gpu and cpu? the the nylon washer on the board or the heatsink?
nuttanic 11 months ago
@nuttanic The drive was broken whe i bought it. The Nylon washers are on the board and the metal ones on the heatsinks. I tried different power cords for it but it still does not heat. I connect it to the power and the light is orange when i turn it on it does not turn green but the 3 red lights come up.
smarttdiablo 11 months ago
@smarttdiablo
power up the box, hold the sync button and press the eject button 4 times and post how many lights flash each time

this is the same dam thing as the "towel trick" but u voided the fucking warranty!
emerybryant 11 months ago
@emerybryant not quite einstein, the towel trick doesn't get hot enough to melt the solder and is the system itself generating the heat. Not safe. This method does get hot enough to melt the solder and is from an external heat source that is being targeted to individual components.

Do you know the proper degree to heat it with? What temp is too much? What is too little?
TakeTwoGameShop 1 year ago
