As someone who grew up in the Rox/Dot area...I want to commend you for this piece....back in the day, whenever we saw improvements in Roxbury, I always told my home boys, it's not for you....20+ years later (moved out in early 90's), it's become clear that those improvements were not for us....Thank you for sharing this piece, it helps me to illustrate to my kids just how fortunate they are to have the life they live....PEACE!

America's older cities are all being gentrified for the most part. Some cities have had racial tensions as a result. Chicago, my hometown, has been hit hard by rapid gentrification and there have always been deep racial divisions in Chicago, but as the West and Southsides have increased in value these tensions have boiled over.
I would advise that people stop making these videos and get something together to make their neighborhood a great place to live. If blacks took care of their neighborhoods, they wouldn't have to worry much about the development in the area (saying this as a black man to his people)

This has actually been the plan of the Real estate industry starting in the 90's. Move upper class whites into older, better built homes and renewal areas. Drive up values and taxes. Then lobby for section 8 and move section 8 into suburban areas built and designed to last 20-30 years and then get ready to build more new half million dollar plywood mansions in the outer burbs' for whites fleeing the now older, decaying suburbs. This was the plan to keep the phony housing boom going.

Affirmative Action as applied by civil service and college entry has given preferential treatment (via points and admissions) to blacks and women (black and white). Check out the stats if you don't believe me. You can find them on Google.
Affirmative action still benefits white women and so does welfare when you look at actual numbers. As for as preferential treatment before the Vietnam war 80% of all college grads had to take calculus except for fine arts. Black colleges were inferior be design but got the best students. Folks with Cs and Ds in math and science did not get in college! The SAT test is how minorities got in, white males went to major in poli-sci to become politicians, to keep us in or out of Vietnam how many went?
The statics state that 37% of the people receiving welfare are black while making up only 14% of the population so I'm not sure where you are getting your stats. I do agree that there was preferential treatment for Irish and Italian immigrants 75-150 years ago (although they too were treated like shit). But that's the past if you have a 50% dropout rate among blacks that group had just cut themselves out of the majority of jobs out there. Gentrification is simply an ongoing cycle of investment and disinvestment. Historically well built homes have not been well maintained over the years, and investors see this as an opportunity (and it's a sad cycle). People in these neighborhoods need to personally seek funds that are available to them in order to maintain these homes, and then it wouldn't be such a big deal. It is happening in my community, and people need to learn that there is help out there for them. They don't have to lose!

My main point is that statistically speaking you have a huge problem with the high school dropout rate for blacks (50%), with the male incarceration/or other phase of correction rate (25%), and the rate of single parent households (68%). These problems are interrelated and affect EVERYONE. Most of those areas were not ghettos and there are countless photos and crime statistics to prove this.

We live in an Industrial society where in the past(Irish, Italian Immigrants) people didn't need a high school/college degree to work in a factory. Jobs today are different and require more skill. I think this movie is very well-made. However, there is one misconception: Gentrification is not a racially based issue nor racially motivated. It is, first and foremost, a class issue of one pushing out another. While the course of world events dictate that most men and women on the higher end of the income spectrum are white, there are black, hispanic, and asian gentrifiers as well.

I've read comments on here saying white people are "taking over", but are the current residents in these neighborhoods doing all they can to provide basic maintenance on their homes? Roxbury and Dorchester are the only REAL neighborhoods in Boston. The sense of community in those neighborhoods is something you can't find in the student ghetto of Allston/Brighton, the prissy-ness of the South End, or on the other side of the river in Cambridge or Somerville.
I'd much rather raise my kids in Grove Hall, Ashmont Hill, Mission Hill, Roxbury Crossing, or Codman Square than shelter them in some fucking condo community.
I relate very well to this video. As an African American, I was gentrified out of my area (I'm from NY, by the way). It is happening all over where poor people live, especially black enclaves. But this isn't really a surprised. Whites are tired of traveling to the suburbs. They want to be closer to their jobs, cafes and entertainment venues. And they don't care how many of us are displaced.

As someone who grew up in the Rox/Dot area...I want to commend you for this piece....back in the day, whenever we saw improvements in Roxbury, I always told my home boys, it's not for you....20+ years later (moved out in early 90's), it's become clear that those improvements were not for us....Thank you for sharing this piece, it helps me to illustrate to my kids just how fortunate they are to have the life they live....PEACE!

America's older cities are all being gentrified for the most part. Some cities have had racial tensions as a result. Chicago, my hometown, has been hit hard by rapid gentrification and there have always been deep racial divisions in Chicago, but as the West and Southsides have increased in value these tensions have boiled over.

This has actually been the plan of the Real estate industry starting in the 90's. Move upper class whites into older, better built homes and renewal areas. Drive up values and taxes. Then lobby for section 8 and move section 8 into suburban areas built and designed to last 20-30 years and then get ready to build more new half million dollar plywood mansions in the outer burbs' for whites fleeing the now older, decaying suburbs. Affirmative Action as applied by civil service and college entry has given preferential treatment (via points and admissions) to blacks and women (black and white). Check out the stats if you don't believe me. You can find them on Google.

As for as preferential treatment before the Vietnam war 80% of all college grads had to take calculus except for fine arts. Black colleges were inferior be design but got the best students. I do agree that there was preferential treatment for Irish and Italian immigrants 75-150 years ago (although they too were treated like shit). But that's the past if you have a 50% dropout rate among blacks that group had just cut themselves out of the majority of jobs out there. If you owned a business would you want to higher someone who could not pass high school? So yes education has a very big part in all of this and no one is forcing these kids to drop out.

gentrification killed the south end. All my friends were forced to move out. The only reason we weren't forced out was military billot. However, the fact remains that it is still an economic transition, because you still have black asian and hispanic gentrifiers up the beheezy. Gentrification is simply an ongoing cycle of investment and disinvestment. Historically well built homes have not been well maintained over the years, and investors see this as an opportunity (and it's a sad cycle). People in these neighborhoods need to personally seek funds that are available to them in order to maintain these homes, and then it wouldn't be such a big deal. It is happening in my community, and people need to learn that there is help out there for them. They don't have to lose!

Have you visited Philly (North/West), Baltimore (East/West), Chicago (South), Detroit (nearly (90%), Cleveland (50%), New Orleans, Houston etc. What they are fleeing from is a culture where 1 in 4 males are in some phase of the prison system. What they are fleeing from is a dropout rate of 50% in high schools, what they are fleeing from is a single parent household rate of 30%. Of course there are nice black neighborhoods. Of course there are great people in all cultures. My main point is that statistically speaking you have a huge problem with the high school dropout rate for blacks (50%), with the male incarceration/or other phase of correction rate (25%), and the rate of single parent households (68%). These problems are interrelated and affect EVERYONE. Most of those areas were not ghettos and there are countless photos and crime statistics to prove this.

We live in an Industrial society where in the past(Irish, Italian Immigrants) people didn't need a high school/college degree to work in a factory. Jobs today are different and require more skill. I don't think illegal should come here either but they are not exactly working on wall street. They are picking mushrooms/lettuce, cleaning peoples houses and washing dishes. I never denied the importance of the past I've only said that people need to deal with the reality of the present.

You only needed a 3rd to 5th education to work in a mill, mine or factory and the unions kept blacks out for decades. That is why the AFL was non inclusive and the CIO had quotas. The industrial revolution was BROUGHT over by immigrants and did not start in USA. But the mills are gone and the unions that are strong are the ones that do the training like electrical, plumbing etc. The Teamsters do not train for their folks and are losing ground. Now the public employees union is strong and white males say they are discriminated against in government jobs! Non-white groups like the Chinese, Koreans +Indians have faced discrimination, language barriers, cultural barriers and have emerged as very successful in this country. In fact the highest household incomes in the U.S. belong to Asians and not whites. Apparently they are able to rise above the discrimination. I am not 'pumping up ' the victim role, do not go on statistics which prove everything but the truth! Asians do perform better! Before the 60s cs and Ds in math did not get into college and state-run black schools were weak in math -related fields but they got the best students. Black high schools did not teach high maths and sciences, check out Percy Julian , a gifted chemist who would have been one of USA's best if it was not for his color. They have benefited from affirmative action; the black middle class has been steadily growing for the last 75 years. A black female is more accepting because it a black female that might run off with a white man not a white woman with a black man. I think this movie is very well-made. However, there is one misconception: Gentrification is not a racially based issue nor racially motivated. It is, first and foremost, a class issue of one pushing out another. While the course of world events dictate that most men and women on the higher end of the income spectrum are white, there are black, hispanic, and asian gentrifiers as well.

Roxbury and Dorchester are the only REAL neighborhoods in Boston. The sense of community in those neighborhoods is something you can't find in the student ghetto of Allston/Brighton, the prissy-ness of the South End, or on the other side of the river in Cambridge or Somerville.
I'd much rather raise my kids in Grove Hall, Ashmont Hill, Mission Hill, Roxbury Crossing, or Codman Square than shelter them in some fucking condo community.

I relate very well to this video. As an African American, I was gentrified out of my area (I'm from NY, by the way). It is happening all over where poor people live, especially black enclaves. But this isn't really a surprised. Whites are tired of traveling to the suburbs. They want to be closer to their jobs, cafes and entertainment venues.
