@magnummikerohrer1 I remember my brother and I running from the bedroom into the living room to tell our grandmother. We were so excited lol. I haven't watched wrestling in 10 years probably.
wow the memories...Tony Schiavone was great. He called that finish perfectly. Randy Anderson reaction when Hulk gave up was priceless. This was wrestling at its best. Rememberr jumping around the house as a 13y/o when this happened
It's fun to watch this, because this is wrestling. Not I slept with your girlfriend, lose or you go into retirement, or stupid nonsense.
The reason the crowd is going nuts, is because Luger won the CHAMPIONSHIP. It wasn't about grudges or "payback" or "settling scores" like WWE/WWF loved to use. The idea was WCW made it feel like a real sport. The wrestlers are wrestling, commentators are commentating, announcers are announcing. No soap opera.
Now do you see this kind of excitement and action in WWE today?? I don't think so! They need to bring WCW Nitro and Thunder back again and get rid of WWE forever everyone, it's true (:
So we can witness classics like David Flair vs Buff Bagwell in a DNA test match? David Arquette winning the world title? Fingerpoke of doom? Pinata on a pole? WCW did some things right but they did a hell of a lot of things wrong as well that was so horrible it caused the company to go bankrupt. At least when WWF was at their lowest making Mabel King of the ring, they didn't go bankrupt.
@EdwardCletusKasidy I know, but I still LOVED WCW Nitro and Thunder so much better though because it had more fun and action in it! I mean not to be a complainer, but my family and friends are totally thrown off by WWE and it's boring PG ratings today. They don't even do any of the fun stuff and they don't have any big feuds and teams running Raw and Smackdown anymore. WWE has nothing going for it now so they really need to bring back WCW again!!
WCW was better than wwe from 96 to early 99.....the final product and the talent had a huge impact on the wrestling fans..........is 2011 and I DO miss the WCW/NWO era every time that I watch CENA pretending to be a real wrestler
@saynotoracism1000 Well to each their own I guess. I wasn't into Rodman or the return of the Warrior or Kevin Nash or much of what WCW had going on in 1998. The underrcard stuff with guys like Jericho, Malenko, Raven, DDP were okay I guess but I thought the NWO was washed up and that Goldberg wrestled the same match every time. I'll take Stone Cold vs. Dude Love over that stuff anyway. We'll have to just agree to disagree.
@saynotoracism1000 WCW had good undercard matches with the cruiserwieghts but the NWO matches were usually horrible. This one was okay (by Hogan's horribly low standards) but most NWO main-events were cluster-fucks or circle-jerks.
The best main event match on Nitro ever... and then they trash it by having Hogan win in a rematch at Road Wild just five days later. What they SHOULD have done is allow Luger to be champ for a while longer, perhaps until Halloween Havoc. Then you can still have the big Sting/Hogan match for the title at Starrcade (without the unnecessary botching of the finish to that match).
Lex Luger is one of the most underrated wrestlers in history. Regardless if you like him or not you cannot deny he was over & what he accomplished throughout his career from Royal Rumble winner to WCW World Hevyweight Champion.
The "Attitude" era, began in early 1997, and Monday Night Raw still went weeks and months of getting their ass kicked way after the Attitude era initially began. The only reason WCW had problems was because of AOL merging with Time Warner. AOL did not want wrestling on TNT or TBS, and did everything they could to get rid of WCW, cutting their funds and canceling their programs. WCW was shaken by this mess that AOL created, but still maintained a descent product till the end.
@GamingPalooza rating dropped werent making money not only aol merger but lost a lot money wwfbeating them rating ppv buys were down bad finical condition then merger just nail in the coffin to wcw so terrible from late 99-01 deserved go out of business
@GamingPalooza They didn't just destroy them for a night, they destroyed them for 581 nights, almost two years STRAIGHT! nWo helped WCW achieved 83 straight Monday night ratings victories over WWF.
@GamingPalooza problem is though, The match may have been PPV quality but it leads up to a title reign that lasted a week? if anything put the belt on Luger right after Bash at the Beach then give it a few weeks.
Even if the title reign was short lived in the long term they where setting up for Hogan to face Sting period that whole year so I mean overall this was still a great moment and only helped to enhance the heel ness of the NWO even further.
@GamingPalooza The prove is in the pudding From August 1996 to April 1998 WCW just had the better overall product and even when WWE was coming back in 1998 WCW had better matches and better over all eps of pro wrestling than WWE. I do believe Vince when he said he wasn't obsessed with ratings but he had to know he was losing big time. WWE was terrible at the time but what they were baking and created i.e. Steve Austin just wasn't ready. Ergo WCW took advantage.
@GamingPalooza This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. And the return match at Road Wild sucked ass. This is a good match and a great moment....but hardly better than the best Raw moments.
@GamingPalooza August 4th, 1997 there was also backlash stemming from Bret Hart winning the WWF Championship after Shawn Michaels cracked Undertaker with a chair. With Bret Hart being an Anti-American heel, it was in no way going to help WWF in the ratings, they were going to get their ass kicked
Lol when I was a kid I was a HUGE Lex Luger fan!! I was one of the only girls that I knew that LOVED watching wrestling lol, I wouldn't miss an episode.
people keep saying even the ref went nuts that because Anderson had been fired by bischoff and got screwed over by the nwo for helping the steiners so the win meant something to him as well.
One of my favourite Monday night wars moments. I love long title regins and I think that regins even now should be at least a year but Hogans was so tourtoues. He bearly ever defended the thing and it made the belt look weak. And we all new that it was going to end with Sting at Starrcade but I think this was WCWs way of saying "Thanks for stick with us for so long lets give you a liitle tast of what that moment when Sting win the belt is going to be like."
As a long time Lex Luger fan I was frustrated how Luger always got the shaft against legends like Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan. But all that frustration for Luger ended for me the night in 1997 when Lex won the WCW heavyweight championship in Auburn Hills against the immortal Hulk Hogan. The crowd was incredible and ubeleivably loud. To me this was my all time favorite moment as a wrestling fan. I couldn't believe it. Great commentary by the crew and especially Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
One of those moments that are amazing to witness when you're a "mark." I grew up watching wcw, this was when I first started watching (earlier that summer). You don't get many reactions like that. While not the loudest you'll ever hear, it still was an awesome pop.
Who would have ever thought WCW would have been out of business just four years later on this night? What a shame. WCW was doing things right at this point.
This was one of those epic matches during the monday night wars along with Hogan vs Goldberg, Stone Cold vs Kane after king of the ring 98, and The Rock vs Mankind when mick foley won his first wwf title.
I was there that night. One of the most amazing nights in wrestling history. The energy in the arena when Luger finally took the belt off of "Hollywood" was magical
Lex Luger my all time favorite wrestler defeating Hulk Hogan for the WCW heavyweight title on Monday Nitro on August 4, 1997 was my all time favorite moment watching professional wrestling because of what the NWO stood for and the damage they did to WCW and because of what Hogan stood for and because Luger was always hed back by promoters. But not on this night. The drama was incredible and it was the loudest wrestling crowd I have ever heard. Bobby Heenan's analysis was truly superb.
@ahmad3652 Absolutely Ahmad. When Luger beat Hogan for the WCW heavyweight title that night in Auburn Hills it was the most loud and electric wrestling arena I've ever heard. And the announcers were phenomenol especially Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
@terror923 lex luger was a lousy wrestler, so was hogan. may i direct you to the tiger mask vs dynamite kid series? or mid 90s ECW for a look at what a good wrestling match looks like?
@terror923 ARE YOU FOR REAL?????? Are we talking about the same stiff boring wrestler who was notorious for being crap, even wrestlers who worked with him (With the exception of his boyfriend Sting) all say he was crap. Even Ric Flair said he respects Luger but only for effort not for skill.
Remember the Lex Express? If he was good that would have worked and not been such a monumental failure
Agreed. Hogan-Sting at Starrcade '97 was a really poorly executed match...Hogan-Luger was everything Hogan-Sting SHOULD have been.
This was one of the greatest performances of Hogan's career...he mixed up his attack, kept up a quick pace, and interacted with both camera and crowd like the masterful showman he is.
if only this had happened the exact same way a few months later at Starrcade with Sting.

This match alone completely pwnchops anything that Raw has ever done... lets take a look at the satistics and brilliants of this...
1.) Hogan won the title on August of 1996, held onto the title for a whole year.
2.) nWo was the ultimate unbeatable wrestling stable.
3.) Lex Luger was an underdog going into this match.
4.) The match was PPV quality.
5.) Nitro scored a 4.4 rating, Raw scored a 2.7 rating

It's kind of sad to watch this, considering how this is how the Sting/Hogan match should have ended.

I was there that night. One of the most amazing nights in wrestling history. The energy in the arena when Luger finally took the belt off of "Hollywood" was magical

@WyldKnyght I think magical describes it so well.

Probably my favorite moment in WCW ever. I remember I became completely unglued when Luger beat Hogan.

The touch with the celebration in the lockerroom gave it a certain kind of realism, which is what's lacking in wrestling these days.
NoRulesInNam 1 year ago
Fuck, you just do NOT get crowd excitement like this anymore.

Hogan's a terrible worker, but he is the reason I got into wrestling so I can't hate him at all.

This was awesome. I was there at the Palace in Auburn Hills watching live. Everyone went crazy! I remember it like yesterday!

@lookingforblueskies luger deserved the put over
ahmad3652 1 year ago 3
@ahmad3652 Absolutely Ahmad. When Luger beat Hogan for the WCW heavyweight title that night in Auburn Hills it was the most loud and electric wrestling arena I've ever heard. And the announcers were phenomenol especially Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.

how does this video not have 10million+ views this was one of the best matches of all times
terror923 1 year ago
@terror923 lex luger was a lousy wrestler, so was hogan. may i direct you to the tiger mask vs dynamite kid series? or mid 90s ECW for a look at what a good wrestling match looks like?
dinobillington 1 year ago
@dinobillington what are you talking about? lex luger was epic all of his matches are classics, i can agree hogan was lousy but not lex
terror923 1 year ago
@terror923 ARE YOU FOR REAL?????? Are we talking about the same stiff boring wrestler who was notorious for being crap, even wrestlers who worked with him (With the exception of his boyfriend Sting) all say he was crap. Even Ric Flair said he respects Luger but only for effort not for skill.
Remember the Lex Express? If he was good that would have worked and not been such a monumental failure
dinobillington 1 year ago
Man that crowd is crazy hype. U don't get that on wwe or tna
truaswad 1 year ago 2
Luger's win over Hogan was FAR more dramatic than Sting's. This is how Sting should have won the title at Starrcade.
drdst17 1 year ago 14
@drdst17
