  • Next time, could you show us you using Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 instead of Ubuntu 9.04? If you hate Unity, could you at least put Ubuntu 10.10 or Xubuntu 11.10 on it?!

  • which version of ubuntu is this? it would be pretty cool if it were 11.04, or 11.10, but i'm wondering if ubuntu unity works

  • A little laggy? More totally useless. What's the point of putting this crap OS on the Galaxy?

  • It is fake, he started his notebook in the background, use his mouse and the keyboard at his notebook and started on both devices team viewer or something else

  • @dede032193 -sigh- It's not fake, it's just that TightVNC is streaming the X Server Interface through the localhost, like any headless terminal out there - very much like the ddwrt routers/Wireless Access Point

  • @dede032193 All the more slower if run on Teamviewer & routing through all that crap with VMWare Player and wi-fi though.

  • @dede032193 It's not fake, you load Ubuntu in the terminal smartass.. you can try it for yourself if you have an Android device.

  • @dede032193 Go look on XDA developers on how to do it yourself.

  • Just buy a damn laptop.....

  • So why is it that when another OS is downloaded onto an android tablet, the bottom bar of android keys are still there (home, back, multi-tasking and time)?

  • @GotsProblems key phrase runs on top "run on top of the dalvik os " like a virtual machine"

  • @GotsProblems they're run on top of Android, not in place of it.

  • I want to see it native :) and on the ipad too hehe they will be nice portable computers :)

  • So you are virtualizing ubuntu....right?

  • how to extend free space after installation ? by default free space is only 300 mb

  • Oooohhh...I thought that sounded weird. As soon as he mentioned VNC I started thinking this wasn't a real install. In fact, it's a "virtual" install, where ubuntu runs on top of android, not in place of.

  • ubuntu its rock :D

  • he sounds like he won a lottery or something,

  • Can you run pc programs like online dj and fruity loops studio ?

  • @extremepickle yarp you can there is a program called wine that will run windows programs under Linux

  • @LinuxTheBestOs Nice idea, but Android on Tegra 2/3 is still much smoother than windows on Atom.

  • @01tommrazek Depends on what you like, but I think windows is a little laggy with atom.

  • You can tell this is just a streaming PC by the interface that remains on the touchscreen.

There is an arm port of linux, might have to compile the kernel and apps manually, but this would actually work (many tablets already run this port of linux), if you took the time to configure things it would be decently fast, as well.

  • @NotMarforius Are you saying it's fake? It's not fake... I've done it myself...

  • Does the touch screen works with Ubuntu?

  • no to all ?

  • Is there working 3G internet? Is there any forum where devs is working on linux? Please say.

  • @esthetique666 not that i know of.

  • So how can Ubuntu run on ARM? It's a different instruction set than x86.

  • @Tyler11440 Ubuntu supports ARM processors.

  • @zaki07902 It was for educational and proof-of-concept purposes. Not for I-am-actually-gonna-use-this purposes.

  • Daaamn! that's too slow :/

  • You guys are dumb he's using localhost which means that Ubuntu is running on the tablet just like Ubuntu is running on my evi

  • BOO!

  • I'll check if it's possible to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu in the galaxy tab, it sure would be handy if it's possible and then remove Android, would free much processing power as well

  • u bun tu hahahahah ubunut lol hahahahhahahaha ubuntu wtf wierd ass name for an os

  • @loko95ftp If you're laughing hard just by seeing this name, you haven't seen anything yet! Lol there is Puppy Linux, Pear OS, GhostBSD, SuperOS or even PureOS among those well over 300 different distros, but the Linux concept is by far the best modular OS to date as literally EVERYONE can take part in it's development, now there is even a GAMER Linux solely for the gamers, and most of these distros are built upon Ubuntu!

    Still laughing hard? =P

  • @spectrospirit

dude relax i know i just always thought that the name was funny ubuntu why not ubonet or ubunet

  • Must I use this Ubuntu or somthing other?

  • Have you tried new Ubuntu with GNOME Shell and virtual keyboard? Or just virtual keyboard?

  • Comment removed

  • He's running VNC because ubuntu runs simultaneously as android, as only one system can control the graphics the native system (android) owns the display, VNC allows him to access the ubuntu X11 session. The graphics performance is terrible but the CPU performance is native. This method relies on chroot and the loopback and works on pretty much any rooted android device regardless the kernel source being available or not.

  • im not to sure but i remember there was a mobile ubuntu project for smart phones and tablets. that was about a year ago. wonder if its still around?..

  • @REMIX8604 yes , call moblin

  • look laggy. Also I dont see the way how to enable sound

  • it's too technical,, i'm a bit confused..

  • Micro-SD Boot?

  • @douglascmartins no, it's using vnc which means it's basically streaming from his remote computer with x forwarding in ssh.

  • @MetalShreader He's using localhost, so you do not need another computer. everything is done from the Galaxy Tab.

  • Not exactly Ubuntu running "on" a tablet is it as your title suggests. There's nothing new or skillful about running VNC. It's a rubbish way to remotely control a system. RDP is so much better.

  • @noreplyism hes still using the tablets own processor to run ubuntu

  • @REMIX8604 Please explain how Ubuntu is utilising the CPU on the tablet as I'd love to know.

  • @noreplyism in the video he said he was connected to "local host". to put it simply, using the tablet, he connected to the ubuntu part of the same tablet via VNC.

  • @noreplyism VNC is only used to render the UI. He connects to LOCALHOST, which is the tablet itself. In order to connect to localhost, you need to first start Ubuntu from a Terminal. Ubuntu for Android builds usually are custom made so the localhost and port 5900 automatically open up when Ubuntu is started.

  • i prefer a mini laptop which is more cheaper and is more performant

  • So what's the best tablet to run Ubuntu on?

  • @GamepitDAngelo I would say not yet, perhaps when tegra 3 tablet comes out on a quad-core. Dual core is still a bit laggy.

  • @GamepitDAngelo Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 has Tegra 3 Quad-core (1.3Ghz). I think it's the best tablet coming on Dec 8th, 2011. My bet is on this one. I think it should run Ubuntu just fine ;)

  • @GamepitDAngelo none really ubuntu is not made for tab pcs

  • @mardurhack Yes, it IS a native installation. It's run from terminal.

  • @itsGazaIan Yeah, I was probably wrong, I wrote that comment before digging into it. BTW just because it's ran from a terminal it doesn't mean is "native" (this is not the case but it could have easily been a virtual machine running instead).

  • @mardurhack I only called it native because it's powered directly by the ARM architecture instead of a VM or emulator.

XDA also has a true native solution that you can use it as a native OS installed on your recovery partition. This one is much more dangerous and you have to full odin back to stock if you want to get rid of it, but its still cool.

  • Isn't this defeating the purpose of a tablet.

  • Everyone is jumping into the tablet/phone board, throwing ideas to split the market into all directions, providing capped software/hardware.

Why don't they just help Android and make a better OS together? Why do they have to compete directly? Ubuntu can't compete with Android because it's just a PC OS, and won't work well in a touchscreen.

  • have you tried using opera, and xubuntu?

i have a pentium D, 500,b ram desktop and xubuntu a diference, not a great one but it helps.

  • lovely

  • any idea whether or not this works on a asus transformer?

  • @SuperRandomRemixes works fine!

  • Use opera men!

  • This would be great with the Asus eepad Transformer with the keyboard dock!

  • @spartan0000000117 there was native Ubuntu running on Transformer even before Gtab 10.1 was released :) Check out XDA

  • could you just flash the galaxy so that it has only ubuntu?

  • you run it inside android ? wow

  • what about iconia a 500?

  • it looks pretty cool.. do I see a lag there.. OH YA it works very well.. Well the control button is not working for some reason.. Anyways its pretty cool it works great.. OMG I cannot able to shut it down.. Oops it pops up something I cannot understand.. :p Anyways its COOL!!

  • wow. I have a theme that would look perfect on this.

  • Nice recording. I recommend that you turn off your IS on the lens. We can hear it working on the video. What keyboard are you using. And do you recommend it?

  • wich is your keyboard ? looks very pretty

  • put chromium on that hoe

  • Will Ubuntu work on hp Touchpad?

  • Does anyone think this would work with Toshiba Thrive?

  • @NJMevec2 yes will work on Toshiba Thrive fine!

  • @zedomax does it support touch screen and on-screen keyboard? I should imagine it does because in theory it will have the android drivers running since Ubuntu would be running on top of android.

  • @NJMevec2 yes it does!

  • @zedomax Hmm, would this work with the HP touchpad?

  • If you connect an alfa usb adapter to the tablet, will you be able to use aircrack? Also, can you run S.E.T and metasploit on it? And, will the same method of installing linux on the tab work with installing linux on the samsung infuse?

  • This is just remote desktop.... nothing to see here....

  • @baselerd No actually you are accessing a gui of ubuntu using vnc viewer. In order to do this, you actually connect to yourself if you watched his tutorial of how to install it. So, it's actually not remote desktop. In a way, yes, but not really.

  • can you run Metasploit on it? and can you put the wireless card in monitor mode for paacket sniffing with airodump?

  • @kg4bga might be able to, there's a native version right now, you could do it with that one definitely, won't work with the wireless card on tab though, u will need to use a USB wifi

  • no, i think you also run android because there is the home button in the bottom....!! ;)

  • does the keyboard dock work with this or do i *have* to use bluetooth?

  • is google voice working ubunntu?

  • does this one run faster than on your other video where you showed how to install linux and it was running a bit laggy?

    thanks for your patience,

    God Bless you and yours,

    Kenneth Vaughan

  • @777kennyv Yes a bit faster than my other video with smartphone.

  • How well do you think eclipse would run on this? I would put ubuntu on mine only if I were able to program on it.

    Thanks

  • @ClinchMovies Dunno about Eclipse, that runs awfully slow already on my i7 desktop.

  • This is what I am getting: I can develop android apps on an android device

  • VNC? Fuck this then.

  • not interested at all needs to be integrated with Ubuntu 11.04 also need to release a way to make Ubuntu as the MAIN OS with the availability of Open Source and integrate a few more features I got a project that will be great.

  • @NewYorkPixels Hi Fanboy who makes no sense. Android is not only for Hackers. It's just that you don't get stabbed in the Foot by Google if you do, unlike how Apple treats iOS jailbreakers. I know plenty of Non-Tech Savvy that love their Androids. Explain how Android has a larger Market share then iOS. Both platforms have their + and - so stop saying one is better then the other.

    /rant over

  • That' s why apple win all!! Because this people think that a tablet is like a PC!! People are not all hackers, they want things easy... Other brands don' t understand that, and they sell 1% of what Apple do...

  • @NewYorkPixels Exactly, Apple products are for stupid fucks that don't know how to use a computer.

  • @anonimity304 yeah the mac pro which is used in the movie industry and special effects industy is for people that can' t use a computer... ahahahah bye dumbass...

  • @NewYorkPixels guess what the united states military uses, Windows. I'd say that tops the movie industry and special effects industry.

  • @anonimity304 cause pc have more freedom in developing custom software i think, not because are stable and more efficient. Btw USA army have ordered an ipad and an iphone for every soldier. iphone will be used to drive the UAV on the battlefield, how does that sound... ps: i like apple for the macs not for the phones or tablet....

  • @NewYorkPixels So what you're saying is, you would rather pay almost double for the exact same efficiency and quality (with windows 7) by choosing to buy a mac. And then being forced to only use mac compatible software? Good job.

  • @anonimity304 people don' t realize... when u buy a mac, for example an imac u buy the computer and also a fucking 27" screen... if you buy the same pc and a same screen it will cost you more and you will have a SLOW ANNOYING CRASHING os with crappy software... pc are good only for kids and gaming, let the macs to the pros... but that' s just my point of view, and i ve tryed... i went mac and i will never go back to that windows shit...

  • @NewYorkPixels a 3.1GHz, 27" iMac is priced at around $2,000. I built my computer with the exact same specs (including the fucking 27" screen) for around $1,100. I run windows 7, and I use it for music recording, music production, video editing, and graphic design. It never runs slow, it never lags, has yet to get a virus, has never crashed, and has only been restarted one time because the power went out during a storm. Once again, your argument in moot.

  • @anonimity304 dude a good gaming machine cost 1000 euros (i' m european), means 1400 dollars, a screen another 600-700 euros means 900 dollars... don t bullshitting me... maybe in america they give pc for free i dunno but not here... and you maybe say it' s irrilevant but i m attracted by beautiful things (i' m european :D) so i prefer the look of the mac than the plastic of the pc...

  • @NewYorkPixels Maybe you missed the part where I said I built my machine. And you need to learn your conversions, TigerDirect has a 28" monitor on sale right now for $250. And my machine isn't plastic, unless you count the window on the side of my tower that lets me look at all of the pretty LCD lights lighting up my components ;)

  • @anonimity304 built mine for around 700 dollars so i know the feel bro

  • its only vnc though

  • it looks like a ipad

  • mac os running on the Android!!!!!

    video here

    watch?v=v6j58ju40uU

  • Idiots, he's not VNCing from another PC. Ubuntu is running as a service on Android and VNC is just used to interface with it. Notice he said "localhost" (ie:127.0.0.1). Read the actual Instructions before asuming things. It's the same method somebody made for running Ubuntu on Nook Color. For proof just follow the link and read.

  • meh

  • Wow, not bad with Ubuntu for Galaxy Tab!

  • its just vnc doesn't use local processing power uses processing power from your computer. however speed depends on your router how good your router is my old router will act like it did for ubuntu on yours however my buffalo router makes everything seem local.

  • Comment removed

  • that looks like the exact same app i use for connecting to my mac androidvnc. So i don't think this is any break through cause i had this running since i got my asus transformer and i can tell after seeing your zooming thing that it is exactly what i am running it runs the exact same androidvnc from the market.

  • pumpkin

  • Would Xubuntu run better since it uses less resources?

  • what bluetooth keyboard are you using?

  • can this install into apad china running android 1.6?? and all ubuntu software can install inside this tubuntu ???

  • @bboysjb You could of course! Make sure you root your apad first!

  • Galaxy Tab with ubuntu is cool!!!

  • Is this possible on the Transformer?

  • @TheMrZnyper Yes, it is possible, I will a TF coming in the mail, will have a video on that too next week.

  • This guy is kinda cool. lol :D

  • What's the point of using linux on tablet with keyboard and mouse? Clasic notebook would be much better for this

  • Tablet + Ubuntu = Tabuntu

  • @dreadnoughtman90 LOL "Tabuntu" i fucking love that name love it a lot :D

  • Linux OS within a Linux OS ..... you know what to say :]

  • very cool ,, keep it up man .. this is really a nice advantage in And-based tabs

  • As usual, Firefox is the RAM eater.

  • this is awesome

  • By the ipad.. Which one do u think is best??

  • How does this tablet stand

  • 1st comment, 1st view, first like. oh yeah
