Yes, you need to use each character on a team against Bowser in challenge mode (multiple colors are negligible) and then the option is unlocked. You can press 2 to activate it anywhere afterwards.

DK is my official homey (lol), he's a real HR machine. I usually use at least half the captains to get the best out of pitching, fielding, batting and running, but I still like a power-based team the best, b/c hitting HRs is much more exciting in this game :)
