Regarding celebrities, it's only women who are really care about them (well, a few women). Men don't give a monkeys about celebrities.

So really Andy's rant is aimed at the women and gay men who obsess over shows like Big Brother, which was always the point of Extras...how the world of TV/showbiz has been taken over by feminised, gay-orientated glitz. This subtext goes all the way back to Series 1, when Damon is introduced to bring in a more camp style to Andy's scripts. Very perceptive stuff.

What I found the most heart rending was the way Gervais coasted through fame and fortune seemingly oblivious to Jensen's miserable existence and although he made a heartfelt apology later his earlier actions are a stark portrayal of the dark underbelly of the fierce individualism of Western Culture.
