  • Physics can account for almost everything, but not how we treat our home or other lifeforms. {props to "G'd of Science": youtube.com/watch?v=1cQI1dRvYvk }

  • Even if the human body can be considered flawed, inefficient. How does that stop it from being a work of art? Isn't art subjective in the first place? People should really learn how to keep both worlds apart.

Example: Music, work of art.. so much math on it. But people don't really listen to it because of math do they? ;)

So yeah, we're headed for extinction, there's probably no higher being and if there is, he's far from being a good god. So many GOOD people die for no reason. Be open minded.

  • If only people could agree in disagree everything would be better.

The only issues i see with religion is when ignorant fanatics either kill for their god or force others to their religion. I'm all for science and i agree with everything Neil Tyson basically says there, but there's no point in also forcing others to become atheists. It's basically the same as forcing some religion upon others, where's the freedom and science there?

There's no excuse for science illiteracy though.

  • your imaginary god is so full of fail.

  • Stupid design part 2- You don't like to breath, eat and drink from the same hole. A separate hole for breathing and eating, and talking, would be really cool! That way you could eat, breath and talk and never choke. Not a hard request, you say... dolphins use two different holes. An entertainment complex in the middle of a sewage system. No engineer would design it that way. Mr. Tyson why didn't you show a slide with how you would have designed the human body? Petty, petty, petty!

  • @mandarino53 So you think that those flaws in the human body, which cause the deaths of hundreds of children per year, are small and not evidence that your god is incompetent if he designed the body? Tyson doesn't have to provide a different design, because any omniscient being could easily have done better than this design. Either your god is incompetent, or he doesn't care about choking victims, or he's just not there.

  • @ScientificSkeptic - You totally missed the point! My point is this: Any idiot can criticize, only an intelligent person can do so constructively. Tyson poked fun at God for His stupid design. Why didn't Tyson present a slide of an improved or better version of a human being? When God created man and the earth it was perfect -no disease, no rape, not murder, no aids, etc. Man messed it all up by rebelling against Him (I know you don't believe this explanation, but it makes total sense to me).

  • @mandarino53 I understand your beliefs and I used to share them. The problem is that even if they are true, then your god made this universe preset to essentially fall apart as soon as a person who did not at the time have knowledge of good and evil committed an act that your god had predefined as evil. It is an example of your god setting a metaphorical booby trap and punishing the entire universe when it was triggered. And this god is supposed to be the source of all morals?

  • @ScientificSkeptic - I think not. When God created this universe... everything was good, really good! Period! It wasn't preset to fall apart. Where the twin towers preset to fall apart? Absolutely not! They fell apart when two planes flew into them.

The world fell apart when Adam and Eve rebelled. They triggered the evil and the pain that we experience today. Giving the fault to God is only a cop out. It is easier to blame God. If he is blameworthy, then man is off the hook. Nice try, no sigar!

  • @mandarino53 But it's likely that the reason Tyson didn't present a slide of an improved human body was because 1. Biology is not his specialty, 2. That's not what the topic of his talk was about (he was there to debunk the idea of "Intelligent Design", not to create an intelligently designed human of his own), and 3. Submitting a better design is not a prerequisite for pointing out a bad design.

  • @ScientificSkeptic - If heart surgery is not my specialty I shut up on the subject. So the talk was about intelligent design, and he made fun of the design. You must admit it would be amusing to find out where Tyson would have placed the other two holes on the human body (one for breathing, one for eating!!?? Ok submitting a better design might not be a prerequisite for pointing out a bad design. A man of his caliber should not make such asinine remarks. The human body is a work or art.

  • @mandarino53 For instance, if a car company designed a car that had a brick on a spring that launched out at you instead of an airbag, I could say that that was a bad design without submitting design specifications for an efficient, safe airbag to the car company. This just comes off as "Oh yeah? You think you can do any better?" on your part attempting to defend your god that, for being supposedly omnipotent, needs an unusually high amount of protection from criticism. This is suspicious.

  • @ScientificSkeptic - I am in no way seeking to defend or protect God. He can take care of himself, of you, me and the rest of the 7+ billions on this earth, including the galaxies around us. Like I said, if any one can come up with a better design of man let him submit the drawing. What Tyson calls stupid design is majestic. Tyson doesn't like the fact that the penis (the entertainment complex) is located near the anus (sewage plant). Where would have he placed the penis, under the arm pit?

  • @mandarino53 Majestic? Yes, all of those majestic choking children! All of those majestic urinary tract infections caused by the proximity of a vagina and a urethra! All of those majestic people killed in auto accidents because there was a vehicle hiding in the majestic blindspot of their majestically designed eye! All of those majestic genetic deformities produced by a majestic intelligent designer! Your god is either incompetent, malevolent, or nonexistent.

  • @ScientificSkeptic - The fact that the majority of people do not have urinary tract infection means that the problem is not with the design, but perhaps with hygiene. The fact that most of the planes that have been built never crash, but simply retire, shows that the problem is not with the design of the plane, but with human mistake, terrorists, weather. So to eliminate the blind spot would you have designed two more eyes on the side of your head? Frankenstein???

  • @mandarino53 No, the solution is much simpler than that. Our eyes are so poorly designed, we have a hole in our retinas (the light sensitive part of our eye) where blood vessels in our eyes connect to the rest of our circulatory system, like designing a camera with electrical wiring hanging between the lens and film. Squids have eyes with the blood vessels beneath the retina, without blind spots. Why does your god value squid eyes over mammal eyes? Does he want people to die in collisions?

  • @ScientificSkeptic - Scientists and biologist, are showing that the design of the eye as it is, is rather intelligent.

  • @mandarino53 LOL, are you kidding?

  • Stupid design! Man of man are you full of yourself Mr. Tyson. Congratulations you just landed an upper cut to the Creator of heaven and earth. You say that in this universe there is only one planet where life can be sustained, namely earth... every other place you either freeze or cook to death. This is stupid design. You mean to tell me that this magnificent planet called earth is not enough for you? You are full of yourself sir! Go ahead and accuse God of stupidity, even though he sustains you

  • If god is real, may he strike me down right now...

    ...I'm still here.

    Science FTW!

  • If I designed the world, I would make it flat. Imagine a spinning plate going around the sun at just the right distance. One side day, the other, night. No more time zones or seasons. No huge zones of extreme hot and cold.

  • That's not a bad idea. Ever hear of a Dyson sphere? Of course, the problem there is that there is no night, ever.

  • @ScientificSkeptic unless you create another, smaller Dyson Sphere (*inside* the first Dyson Sphere) which occludes the sunshine part of the day for part of the living surface (it could probably have the dual-purpose of shutting out the deadly radiation as well).

  • But you see all of the horrible things that exist right here on Earth like birth defects and disease which are not the fault of those who they attack. How can a being design a world like this and still be considered both intelligent and benevolent? I mean, if you said we had an intelligent designer who was cruel and hated humans, you'd actually have a decent case to make there. But a test to demonstrate that the intelligent designer is fair and kind? I'm just not seeing that.

  • And don't try to use Pascal's Wager on me. I'm immune.

  • And what do the 'smart ones' have to say about it?
