The audience wasn't there because they wanted to see Motley Crüe. They were there because they wanted to go to Letterman's show and that was the day they were able to get their tickets for. You have to get your tickets far in advance and you usually don't even know who will be on the show when you get them. That's why the crowd was dead.

They only (he, Vince) Only seems to put any effort into his performance when he knows he is going to be on tv. He probably sounds better right after releasing an album simply because he has been singing so much for the actual tracks that he is still in good shape. Outside of the studio he obviously doesn't spend enough time warming up before a show. That is the case here, i think. He sounded good here because they are still fresh out of the recording studio.
