  • hi julie!

  • Someone please post the full video! I have one other song, dunno the name of it but it's from this gig. I will upload it cos it's awesome and needs to be seen by everyone.

  • nevermind. i thought this was actually johnny thunders and dee dee ramone doin music down in Austrailia for some reason

  • what about the band "Last Race" wasn't that with Stiv, Johnny and Dee Dee??

  • Saw them at he Tote and was all lined up to see them play with Nico at Chasers but they never made it down the Hume.

  • just underlines how good this band was. Ah well, just enjoy what there is.

  • Love to see the rest of the video even if they aren't complete songs. They are an awesome band and I still listen to their albums all the time.

  • Yeah I got those 20 mins on some VHS tape somewhere. Very cool stuff.

    Greetings from Amsterdam !

  • There is a bit more footage I think. Awesome band.

  • Yeah, there's about 20 min of footage all up, but this is the only complete song, the rest is just bits and pieces. Glad you liked it, Sluggo!

  • Great old aussie indie pop punk classic, those were the days in the Shire, Sutho Royal

  • Go Billy go. These guy's are the S@#T

  • played a support with ED at the Ulimo Hotel, June....

I remember when the accident happened....

  • Fucking awesome. Their other songs are great too.

  • I was just about to start playing the Half A Cow anthology of The Eastern Dark when I thought, "I wonder if there is anything on YouTube". BRILIANT! Thanks for making this available. I have never seen it before. :)

  • I know I've sen them - somewhere circa 1988. Who cares - fuckin awesome.

  • Dinosaur Jr...meet your father

  • classic - nod to s mason for turning me onto this in havre, mt. and this clip was filmed on my birthday.

  • And the day after my b-day!

  • Fantastic, great and for me; it doesn't get much better than that. Except when my teenage kids and their bands, covering '60's, '70's and '80's classics, rock out in the music room at home.

  • I think James Darroch would have developed into one of the greatest creators of power pop last century. Maybe easy to say in hindsight, but..........

Such a loss to us all.

  • Wow, just wow.

  • this fucking rules - thank you !!!!!

  • i love this song.reminds me of hard n fast..did a couple of the guys die or sumthin??

  • It was 1986 - the Dark had finished mixing "Long Live

the New Flesh" in Queensland were off to a gig in Melbourne. Nic Dalton had tickets ( Prince of Wales?)

Since James D. was the only

sober one , he was the designated driver...He dozed off on the drive toward Melb...As I understand it , the van hit a dry river bed and end to ended - everyone else lived to rock again . James (who used to play bass in the Celibate Rifles ) died right away ....

  • Pelicanmouse got me in to these again - I'd forgotton how good they sounded - shame there isn't more footage around. Nice one Bill!

  • He is so badass!

  • Johnny + Dee Dee was one of my favourite 80's songs.. a classic!

  • Thank you, so very much, for this.

  • Classic i love this song , i still have it on 7inch.

  • gee Badbum... u digging this lost gem up has put you up there with R.Strathfield. ;)

  • That's the highest compliment anyone could have paid me, shorn! My work here is done.....

  • People who say the 80s was a shit decade for music must have had their heads firmly up their arseholes. This is brilliant stuff. Thanks for posting it.

  • What a talent so much more kmusic should have come.

RIP James Rev Tony & COCO.

  • Thanks, Bill and Gerard. What more is there to day? So happy, so sad.

  • fuck you cunts could sure write a song and play, and sing !

  • Impossible to get any ED on CD today it seems. Would love to hear "Walkin" ? (first song of their mini album) again.

When i visited Australia 1987 i saw "Long Live the New Flesh" written on walls in Sydney and Melbourne, don't know if this had to do with ED or Videodrome though

  • There was a compilation CD released couple of years ago (on Citadel records, if my memory serves me well), spanning most of their recorded material including "Walkin". One of my favorites, that song!

  • It was on Half A Cow, actually, and it looks like they might be doing another pressing in the near future, so you might get yer chance yet, bostweed!

  • That sounds hopeful, thanks

  • Thanks Bill - a work of genius.

    Dunsy

  • retrospectively that truly was a great era of music; that 80's Aussie garage-punk movement, too bad the rest of the world didn't know about it. Not enough money behind great Aussie music acts!!

  • We did know, in the mid 80s way up here in Scandinavia the Eastern Dark were Gods among the Lime Spiders, Screaming Tribesmen, Exploding white Mice and the Citadel bands (not forgetting the almighty Radio Birdman)! Johnny and Deedee!

  • Man what a band. I used to see these guys play live nearly every gig in Sydney. I will never forget the night I heard James had died as I was eavesdropping on a conversation at The Sydney Trade Union Club, sad day. Bill the Bass player still gets around Newtown & Annandale, he also had a great band called Shagging Wagon & you can't forget that he played with The Lemonheads. How are ya Bill have not seen ya in ages?

  • We waltzed into the pub with a new camera after

coming back from the ABC and tech and started

shooting, had no idea what would happen to the band next.

  • They say the past can always come back to haunt you. I shot that video over 20 years ago now.

That is my camera work, I suppose if you dangle

a carrot long enough, someone will reply.

Sad tragedy about the singer. Gerard can vouch for that

  • Thanks for the video!! and it´s great to hear that July it´s doing fine ;)

  • A true classic-great to be able to track it down on here, i would only hear it now and then on late night uni radio in adelaide so many yrs ago. brings back memories.

  • How is Julie these days? Does anybody know?

  • I know that she's now clean...

  • lives in Brisbane, I think, or the north coast, and is married with a couple of kids. She done good!

  • How great was that!!! Cheers.

  • Just awsome!!!!

One of the best bands ever!!!!

    Thanks

  • well done Bill for sharing this!

  • well, we never did get around to making that filmclip out of it that we talked about.....

  • great band thancks for the video

( the song "bad time" on their live LP's is one of the best rock song i ever heard.

I don't know if it's a cover or an original song but and if there's a studio version but it's wonderful)

  • Man I hope that some more footage surfaces sooner or later

  • Amazing band...so hard to find the music, let alone video. R.I.P James Darroch

  • Thanks for posting this Bill... my favourite band of all time! AMAZING!!

  • Thanks, thanks badbum, amazing band! There were so many great 80's indie rock bands i Austr. when the rest of the world listened to shit. Ahead of their time, even before the Pixies. I would kill to get their "Long Live the New Flesh" mini album again

  • someone managed to video the eatsern dark and only recorded one song??

  • superb

  • WOW! That is truly incredible footage.

  • What a treasure!!!

    Love it!!!!

    Thanks for that!!!!
