You should actually find out the Moment Magnitude (which I think is a 6.9) as the Richter scale is a magnitude scale that actually only works for California. The calculations for the Richter scale incorporate the geographics for the California area, and so do not work for the rest of the world. That means, whenever the media says "a magnitude 7.3 on the richter scale hit Japan" they are lying, or have their info wrong.
The guy at the right bottom corner was sleeping on a futon. There was an interview of him on some TV show I watched with this video on it. Good Footage! Glad he wasn't hurt.

He wasnt asleep, first 2 seconds he felt something and looked around when the s wave hit, he took cover under his futon and tried to avoid dmg.

I live in Oakland (Bay Area) California and we have earthquakes but not that bad. most be up 2 4.0 but no big ones since the 1990's
