  • Está la mitad de la Tierra iluminada y la Luna en cambio apenas se le ve nada iluminada?? no lo comprendo

  • The moon is made of very dark material. Look how dark it is compared to earth, even though they are both exposed to the same sunlight.

  • @trewryan The earth rotates at ~1000mph, so the hours passing versus the speed you're seeing on video is accurate. The moon is in fact moving at a different speed than the earth, though it's hard to eyeball if you don't already know it mathematically. Think about the fact that you can see the moon a few hours before dark up until a little bit after sunrise sometimes. Their speeds in different parts of the world appear to "overlap" and so it will be visible for longer periods.

  • @trewryan I am even more confused. Shouldn't the artificial satellite be orbiting the earth? Yet the direction of the Sun's light, on the Earth, never moves as seen by the satellite. How is that the artificial satellite is able to remain stationary in regard to its position to the Earth? Even at that distance, it still should be affected by the Eath's gravitational influence.

  • @fanbutton Nah, this isn't a satellite man. This is a view from a spacecraft that had previously ejected an impact probe vessel onto a comet, to test the materials below the surface. So you're seeing something that essentially is (relatively) slowly getting further away from the earth. In the very short duration of time that this video shows, you'd never notice that the earth's getting farther away. So its angle to the earth remains a straight line, no orbit : )

  • Notice the distinction between earth's rotational axis and the orbital plane of the moon. Cool to see demonstrated live what we've always been taught. Who can thumb this video down? Are there that many mentally ill people among us?

  • @LunarTuner That's a fine way to win people's opinion by calling them mentally ill should they happen to disagree with you. Well you know what? I think that you are mentally ill. You think the way to win people's agreement is by twisting their arms.

  • @fanbutton, it's not disagreement with ME that defines mental illness. It's a disagreement with reality. Any psychologist will tell you that paranoia and the failure to accept unmistakable, rational concepts are elements pointing to mental illness. Don't take my word for it--go have a chat with your doctor.

  • @LunarTuner You're saying that someone who gave this video a thumbs down, for a reason that may be as simple as not finding astronomical occurrences interesting or "cool," disagrees with reality? I believe they're saying you're insulting people for not finding the phenomenon as interesting as you do. Haven't seen them call it fake.

  • It was like a ghost passing..

  • that is amasing

  • I rode my first bike on that great round wet rock.

  • epoxi is a greek world and means seasons....

  • @mikailparidio I would have assumed it mean "GLUE".

  • @mikailparidio "The name EPOXI is a combination of the names for the two extended mission components: the extrasolar planet observations, called Extrasolar Planet Observations and Characterization (EPOCh), and the flyby of comet Hartley 2, called the Deep Impact Extended Investigation (DIXI)."

  • that was cool

  • I think the BadAstronomer used BadPhraseology here. He calls it an animation, but it's really a string of still images made into a movie. Everywhere else on youtube, animation+space=cg, but here it means real images.

  • this is taken 50million kilometers away look in the description there's a link that says it's taken 50million kilometers away.

  • nice animation but fake... why? becouse the distance between the moon and the earth is somewere around 300 000km thats like 30 times the diamiter of the earth. a hell lot more then shown in this vid

  • @killer1302 Fake? Read the first two words of the description...

  • @milliradian

    corection: unrealistic animation

  • Can anyone tell me why when it was night on the left hand side of the earth the moon was on the bright side of the globe? I mean, if it's night, I can always see the moon, so why isn't it on the same side as the night?

I know this sounds stupid and I probably haven't asked succinctly, but it is really pissing me off!

  • peace to you bro

technically said : it is because when the moon makes one rotation around the earth, the earth makes 28 to 30 rotations around it self (roughly).

in more familiar words it is because : while we are observing our days and nights from the earth the moon is mooving towards our west (not only because of our rotation around our selves) so sooner or later we have to see the moon for a part of the day and a part of the night (and vice versa).

  • Because the moon is also visible during the day sometimes, not just the night.

  • @nollafyzzil One explanation we're not tidally locked to the moon. It's tidally locked to us, which is why we only see one side of it; if you were to go to the moon and look down at Earth, you'd see different parts since we can turn away from it. The moon can't. It's one of the factors in Pluto being downgraded. Pluto IS locked to its moon Charon; if you stood on Charon, you'd see the same side/face of Pluto forever, and vice versa. Plus, you can't always see the moon at night...?

  • @HoneyNVinegar It's really very kind of you to reply, but my main problem with this was not understanding how the moon suddenly disappeared even though I always though it was in night sky, but since posting this, I've actually seen it disapear in like 4 minutes from the sky, so everything I questioned was answered, but thanks anyway :]

  • @nollafyzzil Very good question. But if it's night... can you really always see the moon? Put another way, is it true that you can never see the moon during the daytime?

  • @looksintolasers Thanks, that is quite a good way of putting it. Since I wrote that comment, I actually did see the moon disappear one night, so all of my questions have been answered!

  • ugly piece of cocoa puff

  • very cool

  • beautiful and magnificent. we are so fragile.

  • Watching the Earth rotate by 3.75 degrees per frame, once every 15 minutes for 24 hours would have been very dull, so we speeded it up to 6 frames per second, for your viewing convenience.

  • nice

  • for Korgho5757 the epoxi which is a space craft is (31 million miles) away. they speed up the video because who wants to watch the earth gradually spin for 23 hours and 56 minutes......!!!!!!

  • the moon is a cool dude :)

  • the moon is slower then Jerome Bettis

  • Comment removed

  • wow lol its animation

  • Comment removed

  • ik tell me about it dipshit i was talking about the little earth on the bottom left

    LOL

  • LOL

  • @tellygoodnow spealt? spelt dick

  • no.

  • man look at how small and helpless we really are. sad isnt it. we all could be killed by an asteriod or anything floating around at this speed. thats not fake.

our moon is really abnormally large as average moon sizes go. the moom could be one giant ship for all most know. like the death star or something.

  • i think we could solve that problem simple..

  • ... Animation?

  • No, it's not fake or an animation. Each frame of the video is composed of three B/W images taken with a red, blue, and green filters stacked on top of one another. Each set of images was taken fifteen minutes apart. The purpose of the imaging was to look at the Earth as an exoplanet analog (i.e. what would the Earth look like if aliens were looking at it from afar?).

  • It said animation in the description though.

So I guess they meant the bottom left object.

  • fake!!

  • fake... cuz the clouds dont move

  • when in outspace the clouds don't move.. the only thing you see in the earth slowly spinning.. you are the new dumb ass of the day..

  • im glad were all scientist's

  • Yes, but then technically NOTHING is proven.

  • science is still best guess.. yes the moon is huge..

  • That doesn't matter. Best guess is good enough for me. I'd rather believe in best guess than worst.

  • What a beautiful jewel we live on.

  • It shouldn't have 32 earths of size between earth and moon ? Earth diameter =12.000, distance moon/earth = 384.000, So 384000/12000 = 32

It doesn't seem to be the real distance at this video.. please someone to help ?

  • You are right, it does not reflect the picture taken to earth from the moon. something is really wrong here. maybe the moon is closer than we thought!!!! anyone can explain this???

  • The pictures were taken from 31 million miles away, and zoomed in. The perspective is messed up.

  • actually the earth's diameter is 8000 miles diameter and the distance us 238k not 384 it varies a bit to like 250k I see what you mean about that with the view it looks mighty close

  • no, its been sped up or it'll take forever to watch the moon really move.

  • is that how fast the earth moves from the moon

  • The earth spins at approximately 1,000 Per hour.

  • Ave Atlantis!!

  • go read about plate techtonics. its basic elementary stuff. all the moon has influence on is the tide. the moon doesnt physically have the gravitational pull to move the plates we live on. they move due to magnate flows and the rotation of our core.

  • Awesome...Beauty...!!

  • WTF WAS THAT

  • actually it ia a inch

  • actually you're a fucking moron a few centimeters is an inch.

  • no 2.54 cm are in an inch look it up lol

  • Comment removed

  • hey guys i was thinking here,is there a possibility that the moon could fall on earth? please answer.

  • No, you're quite safe. In fact the moon gets a few centimeters away from the earth each year... :)

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha why dude? why?

  • Sorry I was testing the new word filter... I'll delete it now

  • then like, sometime in the future the moon will go out of the earths orbit and we will have no moon? D:

  • Yes. Eventually it'll collide within another planet/moon/entity and could crash into us or anything else. Its a chain really..... one leading to another. But its gonna be a long time like id say 100,000 years? :P

  • The moon is indeed moving away from the earth, at around 3.8cm a year, also the Earth is moving away from the Sun at about 15 cm a year

  • WERE FUCKED!

  • lol

  • no. the moon is moving away because the earth's rotation is increasing its orbital velocity (look up tidal drag). it's doing the opposite to us; slowing down the earth's rotation. very far into the future, the moon's orbital speed will be the same as earth's rotational speed, and the two will be tidally locked with the same sides facing each other. when this happens, the moon's orbit will be stable. take astronomy classes, very cool stuff!!

  • but if the moon stay in the same place, wont it cause TIDALWAVES,HUGE STORMS and BIG EARTHQUAKES?

  • no. tides are caused by the different orbital speed of the moon in relation to our rotational speed. if the earth rotated at the same speed as the moon's orbit, there would be no more tides. it would actually cause less earthquakes, because the moon would no longer be pulling at the earth from all different sides as it does now when the earth spins next to it. as for storms, i don't know. but this won't occur for billions of years, so don't worry! :)

  • the moon CANNOT MAKE EARTHQUAKES DUMB SHIT DOUCHE BAG...thank you

  • yes it does, the gravity influence that the moon have can make the earth have earthquakes,if it gets out of its place.

  • actually there are a whole group of scientists that are saying the moon may,in fact, be key to predicting earthquakes.

Indeed your claim is a misrepresentation of the facts as we cannot predict earthquakes yet.

  • No. it will become tidally locked with the earth. At a very far orbit but before that will happen the sun is going to become a red giant and either eat earth up or push us out to a further orbit. Like two billion years

  • @crazybonkers thats a really bad thing...

  • @crazybonkers True.

  • @crazybonkers - That seems about right!

I did some math work. And if the moon is move a few centimeters away from earth each year, then that would explain the extinction of the dinosaurs (atleast the tallest ones), cuz then the orbit of the moon would be 6 meters above ground.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • @VIPaki1 The moon ran the dinosaurs over! D:

  • @crazybonkers And for all of these years i thought that it was four hundred thousand kilometres away from us! ;-)

  • crazybonkers is right.

  • wow. just wow

    that was truly wonderful.

  • Go fuck you, don't tell me that you didn't know it your dummies!

  • money to try and control more. which gives us global warming, more hurricanes, earthquakes, which would happen any ways, but not with the frequency it does now. Only to balance out, the hurt the earth goes thru with it's nemesis,....Man. We were placed in Paradise, this world is beautiful, and wonderous. But we can't see it cuz of gov't. It is being destroyed cuz of gov't. We r supposed to be fruitful and multiply in a simple form. The world can house us all, but colinization of cities and...

  • selves then. We don't need oil, they do, they just brainwash into thinking we do. We don't need them to tell us we can't make ships out of trees, replant more trees and sail the seas, explore other places that r controlled by who? Gov't. Which is the Devil, in a handfull of ppl. I say that to say this, the reason we have to be lectured on global awareness is cuz of wut gov't does in conquering the world. They take from the earth cuz they have guns, and charge us for a profit. then use the....

  • is it protects us from the outside, (space). and we r taking the days of that very protection for granted. Wut if a hole was blown into the atmosphere by this war, big bombs being set off and such. What would happen? would it act as a vacuum hole and suck us out? The crazy part is the folks that contro the guns don't outnumber us, we as people need to take gov't under siege, and make peaceful demands. only way they can destroy billions of people is by bomb, they would have to destroy them...

  • ..new source of survival. In a sence. If humans were taken off of the earth, the earth would thrive,..crazy right? But the earth is made up of way more than just rock and magma, those just act as maybe blood and bone. But there's oil, gold, silver, zinc,...ect, on and on. All things we as humans take and don't put back, which kills our host, and other life it sustains. We r destoying ourselves and don't care, the earth is alive and feels, breaths just like we do. And the most important part...

  • i don't get it......ya i'm one of those non-nerds

  • that scares the shit out of me knowing how delicate our planet is and the vastness of space.

  • dud to be able to record this in real like u need to be like on mars

  • erm.....thats a bit too far.

  • That is cool how you can see the moon go by.

  • That's awesome!

  • That was beautiful and incredible!

  • love it !

  • Now hear this: I am XiaoXiao from Zorgon 3. AGlapfort-7 spaceship is enroute to snatch all you dunderheaded quibblers out of your socks. No, this isn't the phony so-called "Rapture>" It's cosmic justice for your scientific ignorance and lack of curiosity. Happy florcus Day to one and all. Bezeep!

  • That is cool

  • Interesting vid!

I'm gonna give up reading video comments.

    Why is everyone so hateful?

  • the only way to not destroy the world is to kill yourself. so if u really believe in god creation then hang yourself now. no man can exist today without creating tons of waste, carbon, poluting water, killing animals, supporting deforestation, supporting war. maybe that was the point of the bible.. faith.. trust gods there nomatter what,

  • i believe that we are acting as viruses to this world and its creatures. when you think about it, we're so advanced compared to other living creatures that we're creating chemicals that is destroying this planet.

  • This sentiment will lead to mass genocide eventually. Many people see it that way. This coupled with that report released in Britain saying the UK needs to cut it's population by over 20 million with in a decade or two to be "sustainable." They is only one thing you can do to achieve that. Sometimes I wonder about the true motivation behind the green movement.

  • In a way, I hope other nations would adapt to Chinas one or two child per family. At this rate, I'd rather care more about the longevity of our planet than a dying person.

  • NWO

  • Not viruses but parasites, a virus can live on dead matter. The earth is very well alive and has feelings. And we r billions of parasites, extracting the vitals needed by our host to survive.

  • exactly! Thats what I meant.

  • That's funny cuz I thought I was the only person that had that view of things, wow. It was good to have met you...... I try to do my share of educating the children, and spreading the true belief that we live on a living breathing Planet, not the city or county we live in u know.

  • earth is just rock and magma? and the things we "extract" like plants are parasites too.

  • no the earth isn't just rock and magma, if you look at it thru simple eyes yes. But look deeper into, a planet that has the same make up as the humans and animals it houses. Yes there r alot of parasiti plantlife, but the majority of plants and grass act as filters, air filters of the waste put into the air. Parasites infect the host with sickness and even disease. Plantlife protects the air that is vital to human survival, without humans and breathing animals, plants would have to turn to a....

  • sad, but true, unfortunatly :(

  • YAY!!! LACK OF HOPE TO MAKE THINGS BETTER!!!

    Go thumb down yourself :D

  • what this mean?

  • lunar theory ;)

  • Think what the Earth would be like without our amazing Moon. Would we even be here, is one question you should ponder. That orbiting body of "magnificent desolation" is far more than a pretty thing in the sky.

  • Omg. Scary <3

  • Wow. Are human beings even supposed to be able to see something like this? Is this a glimpse at God's "Holywood" backlot? I can't even imagine a more beautiful video that could be made.

  • Simply beautiful!

  • I hadn't seen that. Amazing. What a beautiful and precious Moon she is.

  • No, that's actually a NASA image.

  • 0:13 - 0:19 rules :)

  • Incredible!!!

  • The EPOXI spacecraft was 50 million kilometers away at the time! You try taking a better image at a third of an AU. This wasn't taken by no HST, just a small telescopic camera on a robotic spacecraft.

  • This ANIMATION created by Don Lindler for the EPOXI TEAM. Lol nobody reads the descriptions.

    It wasn't too bad.

  • Try again. It's real alright, it's an animation in the sense that it is a load of static pictures taken by a spacecraft stitched together to make a movie. Next you'll tell me the moon landings were faked.

  • Do you know why Im in a wheelchair? If not can you not bring it up because I wasn't being bitter, I repeated what was in the description and I seem to be the bad guy ruining the video, when I was stating a fact. I wasn't horrible to anybody so why are you?

  • You took what was mentioned in the description out of context to elicit a response. This is called trolling.

  • Trolling? I was trying to defend the video and avoid further debate over something easily explained, and it backfired; I didn't attack anyone so why am I being judged and personally insulted for something so ridiculous. I get enough of the wheelchair stuff on youtube as it is.

  • I have NO idea why I posted that, and I apologize. Even if it was 10 months ago.

  • the moon is a dumbass..

  • That's no moon, it's a space station.

  • FAKE. Everybody knows that the Earth is flat.

    j/k

  • where are the tortoise!?

  • the earth is flat how can you have a world trip in a aroplane because you would just fall of .

if the earth was flat then how come you have diffrent times in the day because when the earth turns if faces different parts of the sun and moon so when we have morning astralier has night.

  • That j/k I wrote means just kidding ;)

  • Is there anybody can tell me if the moon should circle on the ecliptic path ?

Cause since last month , I see the moon regularly shange it raising point from south/east up to east and again to south/east over and over again ... o.O

  • The moon's orbit is tilted 18 degrees with respect to the ecliptic, so it can move well away from the zodiac. That's why we don't see an eclipse of the sun at every new moon and an eclipse of the moon every full moon. The ecliptic's position on the eastern horizon is also only due east at the equinoxes - it moves to the NE in summer and the SE in winter. (You can demonstrate this with a planetarium program). These 2 effects explain why the moon's rise position changes from night to night.

  • Ahh !!! Thank you , since last month I search for this answer.

    ^^,

  • probably faked in response to growing suspicion that the moon was towed into orbit and is regulated by an engine on the far side

  • Don Lindler, thanks for creating this amazing video. Deep Impact was 30 million miles away when it took these sequence of images and as Phil Plait said it shows a unique view of the Earth-Moon system. Once again, we live in a pale blue dot...

  • It .....was!

  • Looks to me like the phase is the same. Look again.
