Fantastic campaign. Extremely glad that it made it to the UK. These videos absolutely do make a difference - a huge one. I would have benefitted hugely from them when I was 14, but they're a reminder now of why it was worth it. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the honesty and bravery of those involved. They're all amazing people. Certainly a few tears watching this the first time round. It does get better.
Anyone know the surname of the guy called Malcom? I know him from somewhere but can't think where - I haven't yet seen a West End play (live a long way away) so can't be that. Need to google him or it'll bug me forever! Thanks in advance for any info.
This is the best thing ive seen in a long long time. As a victim of the more violent end of the bullying spectrum, it breaks my heart to know that there are still innocent confused children out there being told that these perfectly natural feelings are wrong and disgusting. The more boys and girls that see this and learn that being unique makes you important and crucial to the world. Keep reaching for that moment in your life where you can break free and truly be happy.
As a gay lesbian wanting to go into theatre, I've had an odd mix of people being totally cool with it when I got to uni and a horrible horrible time with my mother (not my dad who's a preist, ironic no?) and people at school. To see my heros and heroines talking about their own painful experiences makes me feel so excited I'm going to be joining a group of people who KNOW what it's like and it makes me feels less alone. GOD BLESS YOU ALL! <3
One thing I've gotta mention, though - not ALL church leaders/priests/christians themselves are against homosexuality. Many christians - me and my family being some of them - have no problem with it at all, and our priest is not against it either.
This actually made me feel more compfortable about being bi. I've been bullied all my life, but not for my sexuality, but I really do know how all of them feel. And as gradual and slow it is, it really does get better!! :)
Can anyone help identify the people in the video? The only one I recognize is playwright Martin Sherman, author of Bent. Who is Stephen, the actor who won the Oliviers and got a Tony nomination? I'm a theatre geek and I need to know.
@TriplicateGuy There is a good chance that those involved only gave their first names, or shortened versions of their names so they are not so easily traceable online. It would be fine if it could be promised that all feedback would be utterly positive, but sadly, even in this day & age that still isn't the case. They're talking about very sensitive, & very painful experiences. My advice would be to just appreciate the video & the message for what it is & leave it at that.
@Hannah175 I loved that they made the video; I think it's one of the most beautiful "It Gets Better" videos out there. I just feel a little more connected to the message when I know who the person is and what they have accomplished. Does that make any sense?
@Hannah175 I hadn't thought of it that way. I loved this video; I think it's stunning, one of the most beautiful and inspiring "It Gets Better" videos out there. I just feel a little more connected to the message when I know who the person is and what they have accomplished. Does that make any sense?
@Hannah175 your comment completely contradict the spirit of this video. Most of those in the video are well known and out and proud gay people telling the world "it gets better" It is patently obvious that the use of first names is to create an informal atmosphere and a sense of community. No one in this video is "hiding" or avoiding negative feedback. If anything they're saying "bring it on" notwithstanding the painful, sensitive nature of their experiences. You are projecting your own fears.
@TriplicateGuy, Stephen who won Oliver and was nominated to the Tonys, is not an actor but a well-known choreographer Stephen Mear (he reveals his surname in the video). He's got Oliver for Mary Poppins (co- with Matthew Bourne) and Hello Dolly, and Tony nomination for MP.
@DrReemer Thanks so much for the information. ibdb says he also got a Tony nom for The Little Mermaid. I really like what he had to say, and knowing a little bit about what he has accomplished makes a bigger impact on me than the parade of anonymous talking heads.
I am not gay myself, I have a number of friends who are but I do know what it's like to be bullied...the pain in their eyes and the way their voice sometimes breaks when they talk about past events...I know that feeling so well! What a wonderful message to give 'It does get better..'
I have to say, I think this video is absolutely fantastic. Some very brave people offering a life line to those who are struggling, and a support network for those who are out and have accepted. It's brilliant to see non-LGBT members, like Kerry, supporting it too. Very emotional video - can't watch it without welling up. Inspirational & touching. Thank you to the makers and all involved.
.I just did a cover dedicated to victims of bullying no one should get bullied for any reason CHECK OUT MY COVER AND CHANNEL

It does get better! This is an amazing video - very moving.
I hated secondary school: 5 years of misery, bullying, physical and verbal abuse.
Hated every playtime.
Never tell ME that my "School days were the happiest days of my life" cos they weren't.
I think that's why I wanted to be a teacher: to make school a better place.
The saddest thing is that gay kids (and non-macho ones) are still abused and bullied 30 years after I left school.
