Wonderful to both watch and hear the inimitable Scott Whitfield slide that trombone with the rhythmic smooth sounds of the Cal Poly Jazz Band. Thumbs up too for Capn Craig Tsurumoto on the vibraphone and Jeena on the drums. Truly silky-smooth good direction by Dr. Dave Kopplin. Very, very good!
scott is a great player, no doubt about it. I prefer Andy's lines, ideas, tone, and control, but that's just me. I studied with Andy for a year and the things that he would bust out in lessons were absolutely phenomenal.
Dude, all I know is that Scott, Andy (someone mentioned Carl Sanders) are ALL better than me and are GREAT! Capn Craig has played with BOTH Andy and Scott - how 'bout dat! Stay tuned this year - it's time for another trombone Guest Artist.
Scott is a very supportive (and energetic) guy. Besides his traveling, conducting, composing, and performing, he's also a family man. This is to let you know that Life is more than soloing (he will tell you this). Eventually, you may find Your Style and be successful with it.
Ironically, Scott and Andy Martin see each other around SoCal quite a bit.
Andy Martin is better for the more structured environment of 'Dancing' and 'Idol", which Scott is more of a 'free spirit'.
If you need verification, ask Da Capn, Craig Tsurumoto. He's been onstage with both. Andy is personal friend of his HS band director, Ted Newton, has been the Guest Artist at the HS, and at the same fundraiser (can't remember the exact one at UCLA Med Center but was with Arsenio Hall).
This Video continues to be the most viewed of the Cal Poly Jazz Band videos. Scott's impressive Solo and the contrast between him and Da Capn (playing the vibraphone) makes this a Fun video to watch. Just think, the shows are still only 7 bucks (too cheap). Research the Connections between Dr. Dave Kopplin, Scott Whitfield, John Clayton, Jeff Clayton, and Stockton Heibling and you'll be impressed.

The Steamer Jazz Quartet just performed at Catalina Jazz Club on Sunset Blvd (Oct 13). They just keep getting better.

Scott Whitfield makes all the other jazz great trombonists sound lame o.O

C'mon, don't be a Hater.
Scott IS Great, AND there are a lot of Great Players as well.
Scott is very Flamboyant, which makes him a little different from most of the others. Trombonists tend to be a little tight-knit.

Yeah that's true lol

Btw last year at the Sac State Jazz Camp, he almost made me cry because I knew that I would never be as good as he is at soloing jazz =P
