I really love how you get those mattes to blend. I am having the hardest time trying to blend matte pigments and shadows.

try using the mac paintpot in soft ocre it seriously makes blending mattes effortless i cant blend mattes very well ontop of anything else it drys to a real smooth base and the mattes just glide over the top :)
