I think you are very lucky to meet him! I would be happy if I could just hear him in concert some day. He is a huge hero to me. Everyday I get happiness, courage, and inspiration from listening to his music. You described him as the World's best singer-I agree. If you look at the way other World-Class singers treat him; people like Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman, Aled Jones, Hayley Westenra, etc. Even they are awed. Look how they light up like a Christmas tree when they sing with him!
He was born with a type of Glaucoma, that would have eventually lead to blindness as he grew older, but as a child when he was in school, when he was already attending a school for the blind, he was playing in the school yard with other kids while playing soccer, apparently, they have some type of metal thingies on the balls that make noises so the kids can hear the ball, he got hit in the face/eyes and it lead to an earlier blindness. That story came from his momma in an article I read.

He suffered a brain haemorrhage when he was 12 after being hit in the eye with a football. As for enjoying life.........he lives it to the full!! He loves wind surfing, sailing,cycling, horse riding (he owns arab stallions) and roller blading!!! More enjoyment in life than some sighted people I know!!!!
It wasn't his wife - they divorced in 2002. It was probably his fiancee, Veronica Berti who sings with him on the dvd Under Desert Skies (Autumn leaves)
Why not, he enjoys his life more than everyone.

He was very quiet. He was riding his bike while holding another mans shoulder along the bike path in Venice. He had his two sons and wife with him.
