How is using food a mistake? Treats are an excellent motivator and can be weaned out with other motivators. Some breeds that aren't toy driven need something to treat them with. Food rewards are a great way to get they're attention. They do it right, they get a treat and praise. They do it wrong, they get nothing.
all the people who stated that the dogs showld be taught without treats are crazy. why do you guys think the world sales doggie treats? every ones learns with treats even humans if we are rewarded by something we do we keep on doing it punishment and rewards can be many different things what is a gift? it is a reward
I have an all White German Shepherd and her name is Missy! She is 7.5 years old!! she knows how to sit, speak lay down, shake habde, and high five!!! it is so cool!!! ill put the video of her on youtube so yall can watch her!!! it's so cool!!!!!!
Gosh I want a German Shepherd so bad! they are so beautiful and intelligent dogs, they learn fast and you can train them to do just about anything except doing the dishes! I mean they are a wonder dog they are very amusing to the public, every time one walks by with his owner I want to ask "may I pet your dog?" but I always have my two dogs when I see a German Shepherd walking by! I've only petted one German Shepherd in my whole life! pretty weird huh?
thats actually not true at all. the best way to train your dog is with small, healthy treats and reward him only when he does something good. after a while the dog will respond even without treats, although an occasional treat encourages them more.
Its the worse way my friend, I work in a training center, dogs that have owners that treat train they don't listen to their owners LOL. They only sit and do tricks if you have a treat please do better research, and I have real life experence seeing treat trained dogs and I laugh at the owners because they don't listen.
well i see how she has a point, after a while they learn to respect you even without a reward. i have two dogs myself, both of them were treat trained, and both of them listen perfectly without any sort of reward.
and also, if you do not agree with treat training, maybe you could tell me the "better" way to train a dog?
That's strange...I 'treat-trained' my dog, and he listens without a treat, and does rather brilliant tricks! Maybe the dogs at your training center are dumb? Or rather, their owners are dumb? Otherwise, they shouldn't need a training center.
My dog does it without a problem. I can tell her stay; Throw balls, through squeakers, squeak the squeakers annoyingly, have other dogs walk around her, have other dogs bark around her, pet other dogs, talk to other people, run around her, and do just about anything and she'll still sit there...all without treats on me at all.
I work as a trainer in a pet store. And i get to bring her in every day with me and work with as many distractions as I can possibly think of. Every once in awhile I will break out the treats just to use them with her, she never expects or demands treats though.
Hey I know you responded to this video a long time a go, but Id like to know how you taught your dog to that because I was walking my dog yesterday, without a leash & she got a little excited & ran up to a dog that was about 10 ft behind us, so the owner of the dog sprays my dog with pepper spray! I couldn't believe it and I felt really bad because my dog wasnt going to bite the owner or their ugly dog! she was just really happy! so if you could let me know that would be really great, thank you
The idea of treat is that it is a reward and not a gift. Secondly, treats should be faded out but not totally. Thirdly, when they're fading out the dog never knows when it is going to be rewarded. Bit by bit the dog can be taught to do more than one trick for one treat.
And treats are not the only rewards dogs get. My dog considers also playing and praising and petting as rewards. Eating calms the dog down (well, not the most hungriest) and toys activate.
Only reason it's listening is because it knows it's getting a treat. But I like that you take petting as a award. Because that's all you should give them for listening to you. Give it treats when you don't make him/her do "tricks".
I guess this dog thinks the treat more as getting attention. If I show no pleasure to the dog with my expressions she does things slower. But attention (petting, praising) does still not work alone all the time.
Would you do your job just because your boss says you're a good boy? Well, I don't expect that from my dog either. Behaving well everyday is a different thing. I demand some things from the dog and extra demands (tricks) I can reward with specialities like treats, it's a game we play.
It's a dog, not a human. Don't compare things with humans and dogs. I know I know more about dogs then you :) I work with every kind. From nasty to good, and what people tend to do is place them higher then us and give them human feelings. The nicest dog can and will turn on you out of no where, because its an animal. You know what, take a video and make your dog do things without treats see if he listens :) Then have animals running around and see if it listens.
I swear I know this dog, but not every dog. (She is now nearly 10 years.)New tricks for training with the new dog of our family.
I've two dog training vids in Youtube. One bad and one showing how I try to teach the principles of weave poles to the new dog with treats. The bad video shows this older dog I was talking about earlier. I know she looks like hunting a treat, but actually I've nothing in my hands. When she runs off the field she is after her ball, the reward. And she can do better.
And I used to walk her off leash often. Without any treats. No problems. In another way that is everyday good behaviour I demand, not ask, reward or not.
Fading out the treats means that the dog should be under control though it gets no treat every time when asked to do something. See, I may have left them home when took a walk. When something is learned the demands grow "sit longer to get rewarded > sit long and when trainer not seen"
how do you know if he pets them ? because I have seen posted pictures where he is sleeping with the dogs
please enlight with comments that have been studied try searching the internet for ways to train a dog you will find many ways and the one that works the best is treats
my dog is a black and white husky and her name is winter and she won the eukenuba championships and she also won a couple of other dog shows so ha but your dog rocks
How did you teach him how to do that? I have a German Shepard I need to train and she trains differently then my rat terrier mix.
