Even the Union army didnt know what to do with this "siezed property". It wasnt until 1863, over 2 years after war began that Lincoln suddenly decided that he should do something about this "property". His own writings leading up to his emancipation proclamation states that. It was at first a taxation issue of the more populous north vs the smaller south.

I read the secession declaration written and signed by the Southern leaders THEMSELVES and they ALL without exception were whining about the North wanting to abolish slavery.
The abolition of slavery meant massive revenue loss for the Southern states as their economy depended on it. I read somewhere that they (South) weren't as industrialized as the North, so they needed black manual labor, I could be wrong.
So the US civil war? Definitively about slavery.

Im not defending slavery, and I am not going to say that those things didnt happen, but it was a far different time than we have now. Then, slavery was seen as just part of the system. Kansas wasnt a state when the civil war started, it was a territory. Parts of missouri wanted slavery and didnt want to be controlled by the feds. Lousiana is was a heavy slavery state. The south didnt want to give up their lifestyle, which the North was trying to force through law. Read the Cornwin Amendment that was never ratified.

Sorry Bobjones27, but you dont know history. Until the passage of the 13th amendment, the slaves in the south were considered "property". Even the Union army didnt know what to do with this "siezed property". It wasnt until 1863, over 2 years after war began that Lincoln suddenly decided that he should do something about this "property". His own writings leading up to his emancipation proclamation states that. It was at first a taxation issue of the more populous north vs the smaller south.

@bobjones27 : Actually that is correct. People at this time frame (1850's-1860's) still considered it a union of states, and not a federal union that most mistakenly think that the US is today. In many ways, Lincoln was correct on trying to get rid of slave. But the states were also correct to be able to leave the union. However, the south did it wrong in attacking before finalizing their independence. We are today still a group of states.

Jacob -- desertions were -- BY FAR - the biggest problem the south had. Nothing comes close.
Davis himself said in September of 64 that 2/3 of the soldiers had already deserted -- and went on a speaking tour to shame and scare them back. It didnt work. He said bluntly that if JUST HALF the deserters came back, the South could not lose. See his Macon speech - one of many things the South had hid for 150 years.

Southern dumb fuck -- Lee was still getting rich on slavery after 1862.
Davis in 1863 said slavery would be FOREVER permanent, and that ALL blacks in the North or South who had been freed before, were hereby placed back on slave status -- forever.
Davis also said in 1863 that the South would win the war -- in the NORTH too -- and make slaves of all blacks in the NOrth. And that the Union would be restored -- as a slave nation.

Oh, and you realize there was slavery in Missouri and Kentucky and Maryland and Deleware and Washington DC. You also realize that West Virginia was admitted as a slave state right? Did you also know there were still some slaves in New Jersey and New York? They were old having been born before the cutoff date but slaves nonetheless. Did you realize the NE states were still engaged in slave trading?
