How about this: Imagine that everywhere you walked, words were etched into buildings or trees or sidewalks....anything pertaining to the results we wish to have our actions create. Imagine this for real, everywhere! Wouldn't that eventually change the way you feel and therefore affect the quality of action you took? Or, imagine the opposite. Imagine negative words everywhere you looked! Action follows thought. One of the most valuable actions we can take is to change our thoughts.
Another way to perceive the strength of words is to recognize that all words are backed by emotion. The music to this video, the emotion of the words, has power to move people to take action. I find it oddly funny that this fellow who claims words are weak wouldn't see that action follows the words (ideas) that we most focus on. Again, what but the words in the video spurred him to take the action to comment on them?....:)
I find shizuoka123's first comment funny. Maybe words are weak to him because he's not yet familiar with their power to shape the world? If words had no significant power why would he use words to point out that they are powerless? Expressing our opinions is positive and valuable action in itself, n'est-ce pas?...:)
Words are so weak. So very weak. Please keep painting your pictures and sprinkling glitter on your messages of peace. I'll be living it through my actions. Peace.
You mean propaganda? Well, perhaps I should clarify my position. Words can evoke emotion and inspiration within us all. But in terms of 'practicing what you preach', words and promises are indeed weak unless they are followed though. And I'm convinced of this all the more so when these words are about issues that need action; desperately, immediately. Issues like war and racism.
I hope that this has cleared up any misconceptions as to what I previously posted.
Inspiration is all well and good, but actions speak louder than words. I don't condemn inspiration, I just mock people that profess to hold these ideals on a pedestal while never putting them into real practice.
An end resolution is lacking; namely, nothing gets done, but you get to feel good about yourself for 'doing the right thing'. I'd rather perform acts of civil disobedience to enact change then to paint pictures and change nothing, that's all.
What you are saying is obvious, shizuoka123. But to criticize a bunch of high school kids who are only beginning to think about this, while bragging about your own deeds is what I was referring to. Good actions without humility breed arrogance. Arrogance does not equal righteousness...merely self-righteousness.
"...Students from INNO 323, Winter 2007, University of Calgary..." High schoolers?!
I find your posts misleading with the (incorrect) assertion that high schoolers only begin to think about peace in their late teens, but this aside, am I to understand that the above troll post was to show me that I'm essentially right, but I'm 'bragging' too much about it? I reject the bragger label. Perhaps using quotes as the crux of your posts make you look a little holier-than-thou yourself?
What I LOVE is that most off them used the help of others with the paint to get their message across, it's very fitting, unity and connection and all. Really liked it!
The INNO 323 students accepted the hand-painting exercise with enthusiasm and interest. Thanks for the inspiration!! FYI, the song is by a well-known band in Thailand, called 'Silly Fools'. They are passionate about social causes at home and around the world. Some of their recent music is very relevant. Please check it by searching for 'sillyfoolsmusic' on the myspace website.

In some cases, words can be extremely powerful. They can influence people into supporting acts that logic and facts would discourage. WMD?
