I was vegetarian for 5 years and had to have blood transfusions for extremly low iron count in my blood. You need the iron and the protien from the meat and there are other vitamins in meat that are hard to find in other things. It's hard to be vegetarian as you have to take vitamin supplements a lot. If you wanted to change your diet it's always best to speak with your doctor too as changing your diet always effects your health.
that is utter nonsense.i stopped eating red meat in 1977 (23 years) and all other meat shortly thereafter..i have too much iron in my blood, according to my primary care physician (it's probably genetic-as is my low blood pressure), and am a regular apheresis donater (blood plasma instead of platelets).let's not generalize from our individual experiences.lifestyle changes take self-discipline + guidance (my motivation was anaphylactic shock from the food chain - THAT will get your attention!)

In fact, I remember reading about a world body building champion who stuck to a stict vegan diet.

There've been lobbyists working w/Washington for many years, to protect the sales of products. Humans need to eat, so you can't tell me that shortcuts haven't been taken, and mixed messages are sent through the media, that we need this product or that product in our daily diets. When the FDA start to do their job & remove trans fats, hydrogenerated oils, from our Food Supply, get a research team for med's, before they go to market, as well! As long as there's money to make they truly don't care!
We tend to forget the horrific msgs that were sent thru the media in the '70's on what were done to calf's, so that human's can eat our their precious Veal. Suspended in air for no muscle gain, fed/injected w/chemical's to be tender, to be "extra special" for the human plates. Placed in line, one after the other and watch, as their fellow animals are slaughtered, within days results are placed for eating. Can't tell me that this horrific process does not affect the meat that is later eaten!!

Great idea. Let's spread the truth. Lettuce, spinach, jalapenos and tomatoes. These food items are the source of this country's most recent foodborne illness outbreaks from, you guessed it, e-coli and salmonella. Lastly, why are we discussing raw meat? Who eats raw meat? Update... Cave men are now extinct. Cook and handle meats according to appropriate USDA guidelines and e-coli and salmonella become a non-issue. That's the truth.
Careful what you wish for Vegan consumers. "Free Range" makes everyone feel all warm and fuzzy, it fails to reflect the parasite and disease infestation that accompany it. Production agriculture is a scientific business and millions of dollars are spent to determine the most productive, safe, healthy and yes, HUMANE way to produce food for human consumption. In agreement with 4thefarm, following USDA guidelines in addition to on the farm practices help insure a safe, nutritious, quality product.
No it isn't. Our 'real' diet, as you incorrectly call our natural diet, is omniverous. Animals AND vegetable matter. It's reality, and you just have to face it. Being a non meat eater is a choice that you have now, because you live in a comparatively rich(and I don't mean just economically, but in diversity, and freedom of choice as well) society.
Ask any nutritionist.. I do and have. Most licensed dietitians will tell you that a diet that includes ALL FOODS in moderation is the best approach for complete nutrition. A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT SPAM THIS REALLY FREAKS ME)

Eating meat is natural and healthy! We have evolved to be meat eaters and have been eating meat since we were hunter-gatherers. Hence the name hunter! Just look at our teeth, designed for tearing and chewing meat.
The top of the food chain is meant to eat meat. Wolves eat other animals, it is what we do!
Eating meat is not natural and healthy. We have evolved into very skilled hunters, but our teet were meant to grind soft food. Not tear through food like a dog or cat, because they are flat for us, not pointy like theres.
The top of the food chain is meant to evolve into a higher state and allow something else to take it's place without disturbing the natural way of life.
God put you hear didn't he? LoL, friggin religion!
Actually, our teeth ARE meant to tear meat AND vegetable matter. Our digestive system is meant to handle an animal and vegetable diet. We are omnivores by birth. While it is fine to CHOOSE not to eat parts of the traditional human diet, it is NOT fine to disseminate lies and false 'facts' to push your beliefs on others. Get over yourself.
i hope this comment was a joke. tigers aren't expected to stop eating animals. they need to in order to live. humans, on the other hand, do NOT. we choose to because "they taste good." it's been proven over and over that a vegan diet is the healthiest way to eat.
Yeah. I agree with you. My aunt is one of the healthiest people I know and she is vegan and i am a vegiterrian working on becoming vegan. it's a hard process, but it CAN be done.
Very sad to read most of these comments, I'm guessing mostly from people who have never stepped foot on a farming operation. Take a moment to revist nature and the "food chain" we are ALL a part of, humans and animals alike.
We have been conditioned to believe its normal but its not. when your a child you dont know a hot dog is from a pig or cow living being. but when you find out most children want to be vegitarians, but there parents force them to eat meat. So they become desenseitized.
Thank you Oprah! I am a vegan! This was so true. The way in which the animals are treated, and raised. The story only gets worse at the Slaughterhouses. Its sickening! If you think about it,we dont need to eat animal products. Its our desire that befall us all. Its not what is best for the animals or the good of human health. We can live without animal products, much better. In my opinion eating meat is killing us and our planet so perhaps that was the forbidden food in Gen! all the best Catherine
Yeah, I live on the west coast so the show here is 4pm my time in the local channel (3 hrs after the east coast watched it). The most disturbing thing is that the same stupid local channel came back around 6pm, I'm not a paranoid but it was really convenient.
Oprah didn't even show the worst of the worst in her show. But I applaud her for her efforts of bringing the issue to mainstream attention. Millions of people watch Oprah, and I really hope something encourages people to not accept the conditions of these animals.
We all know not ALL farms operate the same way. However, it's still sickening that any number of farms would treat living, feeling animals in such a manner
I'm NOT a PETA freak, or vegetarian nut -- so I don't care what other people eat. I just wish the meat industry could find more humane ways to handle the animals - although murder is never humane, many changes could be made. They basically torture these animals and no one cares, but let someone kick a dog or cat and its animal abuse
Not all farms operate this way. I just want to point that out. Most American Farmers take very good care of their animals. And for those who believe farmers are leading the charge to starvation due to feeding grain to animals-think again. We farm-you EAT. Simply said. Regardless whether its farming animals, grains, whatever-it's all one big circle. The meat industry being filthy rich- that's a good one! So untrue. If you only understood the cost to feed people today, you would understnd.
i want someone to come on here and tell me that they have seen a healthy vegetarian. honestly. dosent happen. what she depicts on this show is falsified. i am a hog and cattle farmer. i will forever be proud of raising the worlds best food. i cant believe what theyre trying to tell the american consumer.
There are millions of helathy veagetarians. What would give you the impression that they are unhealthy? They eat the healthest of foods - fruits and veggies, among other things
No one needs meat to be healthy. Everything we need to live can be found in non-meat based products.
Get fucking real and stop being braindead -- if anything we are mislead to believe (meat equals life) for us, when it doesn't
I hope you left that comment as a joke because you cant be that retarded

N37BU6--You come across as a little mama's boy who runs crying to his mommy, when other boys are being mean to him. Grow up for godsake...and grow a pair!!
Hello, coward. Did you enjoy attacking my figurative speech and casual typing style?
Who says "How do I go fuck myself"? That's just pathetic. Correct grammar and syntax is one thing, but when you can't also communicate at the informal human level you have a social disorder!
Do you really think this is how I'd write a paper? No. You're not that stupid. You're just an insecure person who can't handle a debate. Once I proved that you're a hypocrite, you ran away.
Keep throwing that word around... it's alienating a lot of people from your camp. I love how you all scream racism, yet fail to see it running rampant within your own party.
"My pappy taught me to never argue with a drunk, a moron or a racist, as it would be a total waste of my time"
Perhaps you may want to do an hour regarding MONSANTO - GMO's, round up ready seeds, terminator seeds, patents on life itself... that would be a true eye opener for many as well as a total outrage.
Thank you Oprah and all those that participate in this program. I don't want to sound negative but I truly have to ask myself, "what took you so long".... well, I suppose it's better late than never and I sincerely thank you. The majority of people that consume these products have no clue who, what, where, when or why for that matter they are even eating it to begin with.
This show airs Tue. Oct 14th... Hopefully it will show enough people that animal "food" is not sustainable. A plant based diet is the only ecologically sound, healthy (and compassionate) way of living. For health & heart - GO VEGAN
I have waited a long time for Oprah to do a show like this.

I just read "Skinny Bitch" and now I decided to become a vegan. I recommend for those who interested in this lifestyle to read this book. Meat industry in the US is cruel and very poison. No wonder why my health conditions dropped ever since I came to the USA 1-year ago.
I saw a preview for this upcoming show on The Insider. I am mortified at how these animals are being treated. Just because they are going to be killed for food doesn't give "people" the right to treat them badly. They are breathing, living creatures.
Thanks to the Oprah show for bringing such important topics into the public eye.
Im a Vet and I feel discussed about the way these animals are treated even here in New Zealand. Im sick of it, just sick of it. I am so disapointed in our country

Look its not about eating meat or not and who's better; each person must make their own ethical line in the sand.

Just because you do eat meat doesn't mean you still can't make choices for yourself ... its not all black and white

Wolves eat other animals, it is what we do!
iluvcows222 3 years ago 2
Eating meat is not natural and healthy. We have evolved into very skilled hunters, but our teet were meant to grind soft food. Not tear through food like a dog or cat, because they are flat for us, not pointy like theres.
The top of the food chain is meant to evolve into a higher state and allow something else to take it's place without disturbing the natural way of life.
God put you hear didn't he? LoL, friggin religion!
jgirl1981 3 years ago
is there something wrong with that I like the taste of raw meat more than cooked?
emergencyexit16 3 years ago
Actually, our teeth ARE meant to tear meat AND vegetable matter. Our digestive system is meant to handle an animal and vegetable diet. We are omnivores by birth. While it is fine to CHOOSE not to eat parts of the traditional human diet, it is NOT fine to disseminate lies and false 'facts' to push your beliefs on others. Get over yourself.

I wonder how the other animals species are going to react when they learn they have to go vegan? Tofu-eating tigers?? Food chain, people. Food chain.
4thefarm 3 years ago
i hope this comment was a joke. tigers aren't expected to stop eating animals. they need to in order to live. humans, on the other hand, do NOT. we choose to because "they taste good." it's been proven over and over that a vegan diet is the healthiest way to eat.
sunny21 3 years ago

4thefarm 3 years ago 3
Another note its natural to eat meat
We have been conditioned to believe its normal but its not. when your a child you dont know a hot dog is from a pig or cow living being. but when you find out most children want to be vegitarians, but there parents force them to eat meat. So they become desenseitized.

I meant to say its not natural to eat meat!
a typo error on my part. SO very sorry!!

In my opinion eating meat is killing us and our planet so perhaps that was the forbidden food in Gen! all the best Catherine

who cares for a moment if you eat it or not the fact is the way they are treated is WRONG!

Yeah, I live on the west coast so the show here is 4pm my time in the local channel (3 hrs after the east coast watched it). The most disturbing thing is that the same stupid local channel came back around 6pm, I'm not a paranoid but it was really convenient.
TsukinoKyuuketsuki 3 years ago
Oprah didn't even show the worst of the worst in her show. But I applaud her for her efforts of bringing the issue to mainstream attention. Millions of people watch Oprah, and I really hope something encourages people to not accept the conditions of these animals.
ImNotRacistImBias 3 years ago
We all know not ALL farms operate the same way. However, it's still sickening that any number of farms would treat living, feeling animals in such a manner
I'm NOT a PETA freak, or vegetarian nut -- so I don't care what other people eat. I just wish the meat industry could find more humane ways to handle the animals - although murder is never humane, many changes could be made. They basically torture these animals and no one cares, but let someone kick a dog or cat and its animal abuse
ImNotRacistImBias 3 years ago
** Yeah I posted the comment twice, so what!
the first had spelling errors
ImNotRacistImBias 3 years ago
Not all farms operate this way. I just want to point that out. Most American Farmers take very good care of their animals. And for those who believe farmers are leading the charge to starvation due to feeding grain to animals-think again. We farm-you EAT. Simply said. Regardless whether its farming animals, grains, whatever-it's all one big circle. The meat industry being filthy rich- that's a good one! So untrue. If you only understood the cost to feed people today, you would understnd.

i want someone to come on here and tell me that they have seen a healthy vegetarian. honestly. dosent happen. what she depicts on this show is falsified. i am a hog and cattle farmer. i will forever be proud of raising the worlds best food. i cant believe what theyre trying to tell the american consumer.
etrain1258 3 years ago
There are millions of helathy veagetarians. What would give you the impression that they are unhealthy? They eat the healthest of foods - fruits and veggies, among other things
No one needs meat to be healthy. Everything we need to live can be found in non-meat based products.
Get fucking real and stop being braindead -- if anything we are mislead to believe (meat equals life) for us, when it doesn't
I hope you left that comment as a joke because you cant be that retarded

WOW, are you trying to be a hypocrite? YOU blocked ME. You're the one running away, and you know it.

Baby.

N37BU6--Sorry, but I cannot stand stupid and racist people. It nullifies any argument you may bring forth.
It is clearly stated in my youtube profile for all to see. Nothing hypocrite about it, it's all in the open.
My pappy taught me to never argue with a drunk, a moron or a racist, as it would be a total waste of my time.
Dead brain cells do not regenerate themselves. Go back to your comic books and let the mature people have a meaningful exchange here.

Keep throwing that word around... it's alienating a lot of people from your camp. I love how you all scream racism, yet fail to see it running rampant within your own party.

They are brutes and animal abusing parasites. This is agribusiness, and the animals are seen as ONLY a commodity.
animalliberation0961 3 years ago 2
Sadly very true. They've admitted themselves many times they cut every corner possible for minimal spending and Maximum profit.
These animals, which once had lives and families and freedom, are now locked in cages smaller than them and brutalized until they die.
People have even said they have no rights at all. they're just property. sad no? animals being looked at as expendable, lifeless objects

This show airs Tue. Oct 14th... Hopefully it will show enough people that animal "food" is not sustainable. A plant based diet is the only ecologically sound, healthy (and compassionate) way of living. For health & heart - GO VEGAN
