What's the best yarn to use? I just started and I'm using 100% acrylic worsted weight 3.5 oz 4 ply. Once I insert the hook into a chain stitch it get caught in the yarn and the yarn splits up. Do I need practice or a better yarn?
I hold the yarn thats comfortable for me but I get curled edges. Right now I'm just doing granny squares because I'm new at this. I will be watching more of your videos to learn other stitches!
@rinnylin If your edges are curling up with the granny square, this means that you have missed some increase stitches somewhere or you are crocheting really tight.
I use my index finger to control the tension and yarn advance. I have very stiff hands so holding it with my second finger crooked is just not an option for me. I am the opposite of you ladies... I cannot understand how anyone can use a crooked finger with out the knuckle hurting or the tendons tiring out.
@gmaw2000 My fingers are completely relaxed when curled, which is why they do not cramp up. There are a few techniques for people to choose from with holding the yarn and hook.
I just started crocheting a few months ago, thanks to your great tutorials! However, it is very hard for me to start to hold the hook and yarn the correct/easier way. When I try, it just does not feel right, and I know Im doing it wrong because my right arm really really hurts at my elbow.
My mom always said there is no right or wrong way to hold yr thread as long as your stitches are acceptable and you obtain yr gauge. I've held my thread the way you do for over 50 yrs!! I never understood how anyone could keep their index finger extended for long periods of time without it cramping
@jcrefasi1 What your mom said is true! I tried using the index finger pointed out and could not do it either. Then I decided to do it my way! :) Your comment is greatly appreciated!

You are really good! I am just a beginner and I wish i could be as good as you! Does your hand ever hurt?

@srchicksr Sometimes it may hurt if I crochet for a long period of time. Keep practicing and you will notice an improvement with your stitches

You should hold your yarn and hook in a way that is comfortable for you! This tutorial shows how I hold my yarn

Hi Teresa, this may be a random question: what is the rubber piece you have on your needle? It looks as if it'll help make crocheting a bit easier!
DELILAH721 1 year ago
@DELILAH721 The rubber piece is a gel pencil grip purchased from Wal-mart.

I was always curious how you held your yarn because it wasn't the standard pinky/index finger wrap. A great option!
