One of the all time Greatest actress in the world. The great Greto Garbo stated that Susan Hayward was her favorite actress. The Academy must have been blind to watch Susan in this classic film and not vote her as the Best Actress of 1955. It's all politics.
I've seen this film many times and think it's the best of Susan Hayward's career! She was one of the greats. Also, a fantastic performance by Jo Van Fleet as her mother. Two wonderful actresses at the top of their game! Interesting side note, Jo Van Fleet was actually only about 2 1/2 years older than Susan Hayward.
WELL!!..every time I see this film..something happens to me. Anger??. maybe, the Academy votes the wrong winner for 1955. Susan deserves the Oscar for this brutal, crude, sincere, wonderful, painful portrayal of a drunken woman!!. And to see such a beautiful girl is even MORE painful to see her acting!!. Anna Magnani?? yes, good actress, but nobody that year surpases Susan!!. Her acting is timeless, perfect in every way. Even now is painfull to see this film!!. U have to see it complete!! Carlos
I noticed Susan Hayward is in this. I just bought some of her movies off of lovingtheclassics. If you are interested google it (lovingtheclassics) and you will find her actual movies and more.
One of My favorite Susan Hayward films,I can't believe more of her work isn't available on DVD.I was born and raised in Carrollton, Ga. and grew up hearing about that Actress that lived among us. I think it's great that her former home and church are still there and that she loved Georgia so much she chose to be buried there beside her husband.
A bravura performance by Susan Hayward one of Hollywood greats. They dont' make actress'es like Susan Hayward anymore. A highly dramatic role for Ms. Hayward no one in Hollywood could have done it any better. Applause-applause, applause!!!!!!!!!!
Susan Hayward had both talent and gorgeous alluring sexy beauty and was one of the greatest stars of her Era. Daniel Mann directed this fine film that garnered Ms Hayward her 4th Oscar nomination. Ms Hayward lost to another Mann-directed performance Anna Magnani in the "Rose Tatoo". Ms. Hayward won the Canne Film Festival award for her performance in this film a big hit for MGM. Susan would won her coveted Oscar a few years later for her classic "I Want To Live"
Fate had it that Ms. Hayward had a second chance in life when, 20 years before her death, she attempted suicide while living on the west coast. After gobbling sleeping pills, she called up her mom, who was living on the east coast, to say goodbye. After hanging up with her daughter, the mother called up the police & asked them to go save her daughter. And so she lived another 20 years after this incident only to die of brain cancer. What a lady! What a life! What a profoundly exquisite career!!
A good friend of mine had the privilege of looking after Miss Hayward in real life, when she was dying. He said her courage, sweetness and genuine warmth were unforgettable. A truly gutsy broad, who brought everything to her screen roles; and this movie says it all...
A DAMN great actress, and a tough broad. My mother was once an actress, also tough, but sadly, an alcoholic once she chickened out and didn't go to Hollywood with her friends. She regretted it the rest of her life.
I love this scene mainly because of the strength of both actresses. Miss Jo Van Fleet, who I first saw in East of Eden, truly makes you feel her pain.
The under-appreciated Miss Jo Van Fleet holds her own amidst the Ms Hayward's high-energy histrionics. 1955 was Jo's banner year in films, and ICT gives strong evidence of the fruits of her Actors Studio roots.

Susan Hayward: THE QUEEN OF HAMMY PERFORMANCES. But it works though. This is how a hammy actor is suppose to act.

How is it hammy? I had drunk parents and this was just how they behaved.
