  • I have heard that before, while yes it,s true, all cultures do have their own, and I have even seen that the native Americans have their own, lets pause for thought, Pankration fond its way to India by Alexander the Great, eventually it was built upon, then found its way to China through Boddhidarma into Buddhist temples, and spread out over centuries, east toward Japan and Silla peninsula, north into Mongolia, Russia, and so forth

  • This is where it all came from, Chinese Boxing, Japanes & Okinawan Karate, TKD, Muay Thai, Bando, Russian Ruakpashnii boi, Sambo, Krav Maga, etc, etc. It is beyond belief ( but true beyond any doubt) that Pankration has survived, this is AWESOME!!! Mmaybe there,s a training school in Baltimore, MD for Pankration. Would love to find it

  • @37RRSmith I do not really think that Pagkration was the basis for East Asian martial arts. In reality all military cultures had developed martial arts - from Europe to Asia to Africa and I guess American.natives would have theirs. Pagkration is quite particular though because of its simplicity - no dances, no choreographies, the main aim is not to defend but to kill and to do it quickly.

The modern re-construction of Pangkration moves along these lines and it is really convincing.

  • The oldest martial art

    excelent job

  • @lordxtuser The oldest attested martial art is the more correct term. I am Greek, I will call everything Greek, Greek but then Greeks have done so much, we do not need to add up alledged things on top!

Did you know that Columbus was Greek (from Chios) and Napoleon was too half-Greek (his father came from south Italy and their real name were Kalomeros=Buonaparte, a name that is inexistent in Italian by the way) but we don't care to push forward for these cos they are not any heros of ours...

  • Pagration is the most powerfull martial art!!mother of martial arts..all martial artas based on pagration!you want fighthing?training?everything based on pagration ;-)!!includes every style every hit, every grapple..!!

  • very nice video mate!

  • Ancient Greek Pankration looked more like early UFCs - long periods of ground-fighting, no rounds, no gloves, no stand-ups!!

  • so this is where the kung fu came from.... all because of greece.....

  • @volikoto Nope, not really.

  • right, pankration is the first of all......

  • This old greek vase looking very mutch like ving tsun.

was Ving Tsun copy form greek ?

have read some USA document that asia was copy mutch from old greek and about prepearing body to fight.

  • @sonofMegaAlexandros Actually my friend it is said that when Alexander conquered Asia except of the greek civilisation literature, language, philosophy etc also spreaded sports like pankration, wrestling etc.So many of the asian martial arts were affected by pankration and developed upon those principals...Τhat explains the revelance between them..

  • @ChillakoC92

that is true, but. there is some more. they copy more form old greek else the asisa want to say, even today Japanese or othere asia want not to say that true.

there are some vase in asia that are keep secret from the goverment, even today. (Japanese).

Alexander the Great was till Indien, there he was bring some greek pankration fighter, fight against Indie fighter for the solider fun there. in some document is written that greek pankration figther was win the most (all) match.

  • iron maiden to kommati ee?? kala to katalava :)

ayta einai ama eisai palaio metalo! XD

wraio video ! athanatoi arxaioi ellines :)

  • This is too hard to read.

  • Pythagoras used to be famous pankrationist and trainer , he got even cauliflower ears just check his sculpture portraits.

  • Damn, Muay Thai, BJJ, Judo, Wrestling and Boxing, we've to give credit to Pankration \m/

  • thats why Greece is still here, after thousands of battles in History!!!!

  • Everyones a historian on youtube.

  • historical-pankration

  • there is an excellent book by Kosta Dervenis A GREEK, on the true nature of the Pankration and the Pammachon (battlefield martial art)

there are plenty of sources to work from too

  • This is not about defending your culture its about historical research and accuracy. If you love your culture so much then get off your asses and put in some hard work to really recreate the arts. No martial art or culture created all martial arts, no archeaologist says this, they only can measure how old it is.

  • cool video but sorry to say if you take jiujitsu and other asian arts to make Pankration you are doing the art a disservice. This has always been Jim Arvanitis biggest problem. There is a ton of historical evidence for us to use to recreate the art, its just lazy to use Jiujitsu or other asian stuff.

  • @bludhall Chinese people, believe that the asian martial arts were inspired from the first techniques taught to them by soldiers of the Great Alexander who remained there after his death.

  • @uboot1967 no chinese historians and chinese anthropologist and even world anthropologist put down as the supre cross cultural i rational myth claim this theory is jut a reaction to the asian martial arts hype since the first records of martial arts predate alexander and the shaolin temple story is a myth. the indians never had a need to borrow martial arts or never recored learing anything other than the phalanx

  • @uboot1967 Well then Chinese people need to look more carefully at their own archaological record which clearly shows combat systems in existance long before Alexander was even born. Every culture has its own indigenous forms of combat, the uni-lateral development theory is just nonsense.

  • @uboot1967 Maybe this is true but i think that Alexander's men didn t go as far as China...The army stopped their advance in modern day Punjab after the battle against King Porrhus.Perhaps the knowledge of Pankration was passed to the Chinese by the Greek travellers and merchants of The Indo-Greek kingdom of Apollodotus and the following kings..Anyway i think that China developed its own Martial Arts ,they are a great nation.

  • @TheKILLA317 no that's not true my friend.I'm practising kung fu for 2 years and there are a lot of " greek smells".For example..instractor's(sifu) belt has the "meandros" on it.And there are a lot of moves that were copied from pankration.Moves of pankration was traveled in some way at china and then they developed their own martial art..kung fu.

  • thank u god that u made me greek!

  • @AnimexWarrior

Actually evidence suggests Pankration had already been practiced in Greece by the 2nd Millennium bc! And in in ancient Greece from 1100 bc - 146 bc.

That Shuai Jiao which you mentioned in one of

    your comments, wasnt exclusively Chinese.btw

It was first called "jiao di", (horn butting).

  • the first martial arts where pankration and boxing maded by the spartans, of curse the boxing they used is not the same boxing we see today, today is alot more redifined and theres alot more styles of boxing, then IDK wich style egyptians maded and then asia invented numerous ma's

  • Every fighting style looks the same because there are only so many ways to use the legs, and arms to hit. And there are only so many ways you can wrestle someone. Until human beings start growing new limbs we aren't going to see a new form of fighting. I don't believe any style was the original style, save for maybe a caveman hitting someone in the head with a rock.

  • @jujitsuJerk exactly...what I was thinking.

  • @AnimexWarrior Shuai Jiao was before that. The right date of development is

2679 BC at the time of the Yellow Emperor. But India had salambam a violent stick fighting art and before that Egypt had hand wrapped fighting, tumbling wrestling and a stick defense called Tahbit and before that in Mesopotamia about 10,000 years ago warriors trained with sticks, arrows, spears and primative hand to hand.

  • Damn, is there anything the Greeks didn't do? What a civilization! Too bad they died out so fast in history. Props to the Greeks!

  • AWESOME! Great video and I love the song !

  • Look, there are martial arts from all cultures. To say one influenced all is stupid! It's not like it took one ppl to introduce all ppl to the concept of fighting. Pankration was introduced around 648 BC. What does that mean? That before 648 BC there were absolutely no martial arts around? That people in China or anywhere else but greece didn't know how to use their hands and feet, wrestle, or kno wat the ground was? Ppl aren't stupid. Chinese MA is just as old if not older as is Indian MA!

  • in Silat legend it is said that a son, prince,of alexander theGreat, came to Sumatra as his fiefdom,he was versed in Greek fightin,he brought with him four bodyguards, each skilled in their, this evolved into countrys art,a Thai,a Indian,a Cambodian and a Persian. They combined their arts with the Greek as the core, this evol;ved into Pencak Silat

  • @TheSilatiger Pretty interesting. Do you remember your source?

  • very nice video!!! and nice song also!!

  • OMG i LOVE the ancient Greek cultures!!!

  • is this song from the iron maiden

  • @sumoshinobi yes!!iron maiden-alexander the great

  • @alkimachos cool thx

  • @alkimachos SORRY CAN YOU SAY ME WHERE YOU HAVE FOUNDED THE IMAGE AT 1.13 WHEN IS TROWING THE KICK?

  • :) ok

  • There is no denaying that greek Pankration is the grandfather of all modern martial arts, FACT

  • not exactly its kalaripayattu which is from india its the source for all asian martial arts.

pankration is the most ancient fighting style right after kalaripayattu.

both are thousands and thousands of years old.

some people believe that kung fu is the grandfather of all martial arts but its not that ancient.. as kalaripayattu and pankration

if you guyz don't believe me search of it and then answer back.. :D

  • @anirudhkrishnamani

I don´t disagree with anything you said except I don´t know alot about the Kalaripayattu fighting style(wether if it was practical or competetive) if you really go over my comment you will see that I said that it was the grandfather of all MODERN martial arts(boxing and wrestling are derect decendants of pankration) which are competetive not traditional

  • @anirudhkrishnamani I disagree with kalaripayattu being the oldest martial art since it's not.

  • Comment removed

  • @6arcsn1sky Wrestling and Hand to Hand fighting are. Could be ,10,000 years old.

  • @clearcombat True since humans fought against each other in that time period.

  • yes but where did the ancient greeks get it from as you can see wrestling and striking blueprints in wall paintings in ancient egypt thousands of years before. But yes the contemporary form of pankration is the father western martial arts with its influences even in eastern.

  • @antowalk indeed

  • And as I said before...

    HELLAS FOR EVER!!!!

  • Yes it does exist.

We are Pankratiasts not simple wrestlers.

Many Greeks, among them me, learn the moves that our ancestors thought. Ancestors like the Spartans.

Plus Pankration its not just wrestling. Wrestling is just a part of it. We learn much much more than that.

We are able to kill with a move or to defend knocking off our opponents.

  • Well then, where could we see two athletes competing in the Olympic games today. The Spartans were wrestling practitioners by the way. The one who introduced Pankration was an Athenian hero, Theseus according to Greek mythology.

  • If it isn't an Olympic game then it doesn't exist??? It is simply tooo rough for the Olympics. But a part of it ( Greek-Roman wrestling) is an Olympic Game.

No. Spartans were Pankratiasts as their ''father''' Hercules.

  • Lol all this talk about Chinese martial art,

    Chinese MA's came from India.

Yoga and fighting arts have been round in india for a long time too.

    China's not even close

  • @SudoJudo1

In 689ad the Boxing Classic: Essential Boxing Methods made the earliest extant reference to the Shaolin Monastery as Chinese boxing's place of origin. Chinese martial arts pre-date the construction of the Shaolin Temple by at least several hundred years. One example of this is Jiao Di, This art has been the standard of weaponless practice by the Imperial Guard for several thousand years.

  • It is not until centuries after Bodhidharma's death that the "Jingde Chuandenglu" (1004) makes the first explicit association between Bodhidharma and the Shaolin temple.[2] However, it contains no record of Bodhidharma teaching martial arts to the Shaolin monks or reference to any fighting skill or martial prowess on his part.[2]

The association of Bodhidharma with martial arts can be traced to the Yi Jin Jing, though its authenticity has been discredited by several historians as a forgery.

  • @Nirenos

Fist fighting depicted in Sumerian relief carvings from the 3rd millennium BC, while an ancient Egyptian relief from the 2nd millennium BC depicts both fist-fighters and spectators.[1] Both depictions show bare-fisted contests.[1] In 1927 Dr. E. A. Speiser, an archaeologist, discovered a Mesopotamian stone tablet in Baghdad, Iraq depicting two men getting ready for a prize fight. The tablet is believed to be 7,000 years old.[2]

Oldest is in Sumeria and Minoa LMAO to bad for you!

  • IRON MAIDEN!!! YES!! awesome video

  • Martial arts of asia are essentially kung fu fractured into individual parts and specialised ie Judo- throws, jiujitsu-grappling, Karate- Tae Kwon Do- Muay Thai -Striking techniques etc. Family systems of kung fu encompassed a whole gamut of forms due to the practical need for armed and unarmed combat for survival. Pankration in its purest form arose from the same necessity, the two I can only imagine would have been quite similar with masters and schools of closely guarded philosophies.

  • judo jiu-jitsu all came from pangration.....and the pangration has history which we can found from potery and wall art somewhere before 1700 b.c This what official arcaiologist say and not every dumb fool at internet

  • You idiot wrestling wasnt invented by no one.Its the natural weapon of humans so is boxing.ANd this so called pankration has nothing to do with jujitsu or judo

  • Actually Historians and archaeologist say its one of the oldest along with Minoan,Egyptian and Chinese Jiao Di styles of combat all at least 3000 year old.

They also say only a fool would believe martial arts sprouted from one place and everything else had to come from that place. Only Pankration websites and Euro-centric books make that claim but so do the Indians and Chinese due to nationalism. Combat was invented everywhere by different people. =P

  • @GREEKTRUE yeah but kung fu is older

  • @sumoshinobi you can say whats the oldest style, the western or asian. since the stoneage mankind have probably found out the best way to swing a club or throw a spear. this is also a martial art in itself..

also, pankration is based on a mix of wrestling and boxing techniques. so its safe to say that boxing and wrestling are even older

  • pankration is the bomb diggity

  • @GREEKTRUE umm japnese martial arts have no realation to greek there is proof the pankratos is old but the are archieological even dence that all civilization develope thier own figting arts. greeko roman pankration wrestling and boxing stated with the empty hand adaptation of the spear and shield. there is noop proof other than the interpretaions of the biased and the biased weither it be chinese jap or greco are uncredible as it is a nationalist ploy

  • @GREEKTRUE also jujitus has many forms and only modern ones are purely grappling. tradional ones are pressure point hitting. and no chinese martial arts did not get here thru buddhism. it was already established for a couple thousads years prior. the turks koreans mongols had been practicing wrestling since the stone ages

  • @GREEKTRUE also with the korean and mongols is the japanese as ther eare cultural related

  • @kaindrg not to mention Korean and Japanese genetics are almost exactly the same

  • @adairbritton 45% in males 50-50% in females. and the reast is indegiounus like the ainus so they are mixed which explains way men and women from japan exhibit certain features that the koreans dont. any greek who is willling to claim aother cultures are too ignorant to com up with complex martail arts should be ashamed Aristotle plato and Socrates would laugh at their lack of questioning and examining.

  • @kaindrg 50% ainu!? thats not what i have read

  • @adairbritton i may have exaggerated the # due to lack of memory on topic but theres a concensus that there is male admixtures of both mainland altaic populations and indegionous aborigieonese. hence why japanese have bushier facial hair than most asians. even koreans who have thicker hair still only have thing groupings on the face

  • @adairbritton i could copy and pasted and the genetic jargon but it wouldnt fit

  • @kaindrg send me it via message

  • @GREEKTRUE no, they came about on there own. The japanese that invented jujutsu(jujitsu) and eventually judo had no knowledge what so ever of ancient greek wall art.

  • nobody really knows whether china or greece started martial arts first. There certainly was wrestling and boxing in egypt several thousand years bc

  • I DON'T SUPPORT THAT PANKRATION IS THE MOTHER OF ALL MARTIAL ARTS,BECAUSE I CAN'T BE SURE!!BUT I SUPPORT THAT PANKRATION IS ONE OF THE FIRST COMBAT SPORTS AND "MARTIAL ARTS"?"!!AND THE FIRST MMA(there are prοοfs)

  • bullshit! but pankeation is really nice. thank u for the vid

  • Few researchers have speculated that this diaspora of pankration techniques formed the later diffusion of fighting techniques from India into Asia. This theory, however, does not take into account the historical reality of indigenous combative forms in all cultures, as well as the recorded fighting techniques of many cultures that pre-date pankration, so the concept that pankration is the linear "ancestor" of Asian combative systems must remain little more than conjecture.(unproven theory)

  • @alkimachos

Not the first Martial art that goes to the egytpans but pankration is one of the oldest.

Not the first combat sport that goes to the minoans and sumerians-

First MMA with everything? maybe but all martial arts b4 the modern area had no rules either-

First combat sport with no rules or very limited I would say probably is!

  • Define martial art . :D

  • also there is a report(verse 586 of argonautika)says about pankration in athletics games!!the researches of mr konstantinos xasapis and ioannis passas proves that argonautika includes informations until 12000 BC!!

  • pankration introduced in olympic games 648 bc but it was existed for many years before!!In a book of pindaros says thιseas killed minotaur with pankration at minoic period that means (7000-1470 BC).....

  • You killed all your credit now we cant take you people seriously.........You just said the book of pindaros blah blah killed a minotuar with pankration in the minoic period........

    1. the Minotuar isnt real but fiction and legend.

2.the minoic period of greece isnt real but a folk tale

The koreans claim 10,000 years history and that TKD is 5000 years old, but theres no evidence, you can claim 12000 BC for pankration but there also no evidence that why its not OFFICALLY in the history books! LOL

  • @alkimachos

Historical scrolls state that "jiao di" was used in 2697 BCE by the Yellow Emperor's army to gore the soldiers of a rebel army led by Chi You.[1] In later times, young people would play a similar game, emulating the contests of domestic cattle, without the headgear. Jiao di has been described as an originating source of wrestling and latter forms of martial arts in China.[2]

  • Sumerian relief carvings from the 3rd millennium BC, while an ancient Egyptian relief from the 2nd millennium BC depicts both fist-fighters and spectators.[1] Both depictions show bare-fisted contests.[1] In 1927 Dr. E. Oldest is in Africa and Asia-look up Egyptian martial arts and the Pictures on the pyramids

  • of course its exist!pangratium traveled at japan nd then they created ju-jitsu the 2 older martial art.what you se in every other martial art(ju-jitsu,judo,karate,boxin,wrestling)xomes from the pancration!documents proves pancration aboyt 2000 years old!!legends aboyt 25000........!

  • Fist fighting depicted in Sumerian relief carvings from the 3rd millennium BC, while an ancient Egyptian relief from the 2nd millennium BC depicts both fist-fighters and spectators.[1] Both depictions show bare-fisted contests.[1] In 1927 Dr. E. • so from this pictures you learn pangration ??????????????????????

is a lost art for thousands of years and nobody in this earth know how was this fighting art in real .... so guys don't be stupid !!! greece lost all culture many many year ego ... now they now only the fightin art of frape coffee ... only asian countries kept the traditions of martial arts and teched from generation to generation !!!!! but that never happen to greece. so nobody know pangration my friends

  • you can also drink frape steve, there is a part of people here in greece that believe greece haven't lost all culture, greek culture lives in the heart of this part of people, probably not in your heart!!

  • this is a video about ancient pankration,it has nothing to do with nowtodays federations of pankration!!i disagrre with the way of revival of pankration(about technique)but i respect every try of revival because it's about the revival of ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΠΝΕΥΜΑ mainly!!something that u can't probably understand! thanks for ur comment my friend na sai kala

  • @stevekaponis finally someone who knows history- it is indeed true, even on the discovery channel it says we know nothing of pankration except for some roman recreations of the statues and some paintings on murals. The Modern Pankration is a recreation from wreslting and boxing with asian jujutsu/judo and kicks. Its even stated as true by Jim Artanis(sp) the father of modern pankration that he had to make up the lost art. lol

  • You are soooooooooooooooooooooooo wrong...

  • We are NOT like this.

Its not thousands of years. It is about 900 years. And yes we learn from pictures, texts, from wherever we can. And believe it or not, we have the first Generation of Pankratiasts, again.

I'm from Rome, and it's nice to see and know, that martial arts began in the mediterranean world, with my Greek brothers.

    Alessandro.

  • hey Alessandro thanks for the comment!!! Μediterranean world born a lot of martial arts and that's because of the great culture of the populations there like roman and greek!many of these martial arts were disappearred in the passage of time but they still live in our hearts!!

  • Does Pankration still exist?

In Greece, do Greeks still know the moves wrestlers used back then?

  • hell yeah

  • ok dude this is kinda a dumb question .....the answer is yes and yes the greeks still use this system today....this was the worlds first martial art and was also what is known as today as mixed martial arts..............

  • You don't know crap about Pankration anyways so why even bother trying to answer my question, when you're not even Greek nevertheless an ancient one so why bother kido?

  • We are not GREEK? What are we, oh wise man???

  • ...Look here kiddo i dont have a problem with your greek pride. U should know by now that pankration is an old martial art.

The fact that the Spartans were thought to have been descendants of Herakles has nothing to do wether they knew the martial art because they didn't even box for that matter! And boxing was part of Pankration's fighting system believe it

    or not!

  • Don't call me kiddo.

    You know nothing about me.

    You don't know me.

    You have never seen me.

And believe me you don't want to do either of these things.

    Finally answer my question.

You are wrong. And you just can't admit our history because your country has none, almost none or a long one but not at all important.

  • Comment removed

  • If I'm a 21 year old kid then you are a 23 year old kid. We don't really have much difference. And again, you know nothing about me. I'm not obsessed. You try to proove we are wrong because your country doesn't have big history. Usted es un Colombiano, no? En la Columbia usted habla espaniol, no? About what history and culture were you talking about???? You speak spanish! We aren't to blame because you don't have big history. See? I was right. Nice talking to you John y adios.
  • @Nirenos Colombia along with other latin American counties have received Spanish influence because of Spain obviously. And you claim my country has little history which is not true. Colombia is rich in culture and has fought against other european contries such as england, france & spain from which my country won its independence as you may know.

  • Comment removed

  • I never said my country has the most important history in the world. What I said was that we have one of the most important histories. We have influenced all the world in many aspects. And we have 10.000 years of history.

You can't just throw away all these.

By presuming you just lower yourself.

    You don't know me.

Finally, I never said you have no history.

But in compare to 10.000 years, 500 or 1000 or 2000 years are nothing.

  • Comment removed

  • I just don't like it when people zero Greek history.

I thought you were a bit selfish and that you don't like us.

Plus you said that we are not Greeks and something about my greek pride so... I... got a bit mad... but you meant something else obviously.

Anyhow history is history and Colombia is a nice country, plus you've Shakira...

So I believe mis-understanding is solved?

  • Comment removed

  • Allrighty then. We are cool.

  • And WE are Greeks.

  • ...And we are Colombians.lmso

  • I wrote above that we are GREEKS because you claimed that we aren't.

I never claimed you are not Colombians.

  • MMA is "mixed martial arts", and yeah alot of rules used in mma matches are the same. But "Pankration" itself was much more dangerous than what we know as "mma" today. Name someone you know of on top your head that still practices this form of martial arts...?

I could only think of one particular known Greek. And I can't exactly remember his name.
