To ask the BBC to release this on DVD, go to the bbcamericashop site (I don't think YouTube will allow me to use the actual address), then click on "DVD" tab upper left, go down about 3/4 on the next page that comes up to "Suggest a Title" and tell them you want to see the 2005 documentary "Riot at the Rite" released.
Its difficult to process Stravinsky's music but it is amazing. It just takes a while to appreciate it. Thats why hes called the Picasso of music. Picasso caused controversy as a result of his extremely abstract paintings. Stravinsky was an abstract composer.
This ballet inspires me to learn more about dance choreography, I fear a lot of the meaning escapes me :( The parts I do understand though are very powerful to me :) And I love the music! :D
also here, girlsglobal?I suppose you posted this rubbish also in the other two video pages,it seems you this a good place to promote your dirty porn site?
I kept a tape I made from the PBS broadcast in '97 or so, and just last week looked at it and discovered that I had taped over it! Searching PBS and the Joffrey ballet sites showed the performance, but there is no sign of a tape or DVD release.
I love the great gongs in the spring dance part ;) ... ohh yes another question : Who was at the performance at the time and what was there opinion ? ( Ravel ? Debussy ? Saint Saens ? .. ? ^^ )
Many thanks Phlash. Good to know that at least one person in the U.S. has a brain! Maybe we are both begging the question that the Lenin referred to was the well known one. If you could tell me about the VHS version your music composition teacher possesses I'd be forever in your debt. Are any of your own compositions available?
I found out that the video I watched was a straight recording from PBS when the film was aired some time in the '80s, and I asked him if they had it on DVD or VHS and told me that he'd been waiting for PBS to do that for 20 years, so I'm guessing they haven't yet released the video (as I'm sure he'd be the first person to find out because he's so obsessed with the piece).
Whatever you say, buddy. That's not called problem solving; I was only using my "fantastic brain" to point out a mistake that was obvious to me...Anyways, there IS a version that PBS put out in the 80's that is about the recreation of Nijinksy's choreography from research that I watched recently on a VHS at my composition teacher's house (which it looks like this video is based on).
This is a reconstruction performed by the Joffrey ballet. PBS aired a special on a show called American Masterpieces or something like that. It dates from '96 or '97. The first half hour was about the reconstruction, and the second half had the performance.
It's not on video. This was originally screened on BBC 2 or 3. There is no version of Rite of Spring on video or film which I could find leave alone the Nijinsky version. The BBC did not reply to my query as to a repeat!
Yep (It's actually spelled "Najinski" but you're close. :P). That is what he actually did at the premiere when the riot went on in the audience, since it was hard for the dancers to hear the music.
Half way up your arse dimwit. Didn't you notice.

Which film was this?
science454 3 years ago
It's from a BBC dramatization called "Riot at the Rite." I've seen it before, and it's quite interesting (though not entirely accurate). :)

Thanks very much.

I also think the music is buetiful. It's just that the audience was not ready to here it. It's hard to understand

saint saens was on the premiere, but walked away after he heard the "misuse" of the bassoon on the first few bars.
buaco 5 years ago
I don't believe Saint-Saens walked away, but was oblivious to the fact that it was a bassoon.
ThaSchwab 4 years ago
"If that's a bassoon, then I'm a buffoon."
DannyDaWriter 2 years ago
I actually believe it was "baboon," not "buffoon." In the end, he was either a buffoon or a baboon.

BIG mistake on the video! A guy yells "Long live Lenin!" ....The Rite of Spring premiered 4 years before the communist revolution. Whoops!

How about turning your fantastic brain to solving real problems - I leave it up to you to decide which.

Dude, it's not like Lenin didn't exist before the revolution. He may not have been a head of state, but he was a well known russian rabble-rouser.
Boltgrinder 5 years ago
That's right, Lenin dropped to earth out of a spacecraft in 1917.
