@markram12345 : Yes, the cast visited Hawaii in the late 70s; back in the day when CTW could afford to make decent shows, those occasional "trip weeks" were the highlight of a season. (The cast has also visited Puerto Rico, New Mexico, and Montana together; Big Bird spent two full-length movies going to China and Japan.)
I think paddling out was real, but something about the splashing wave when he is surfing doesn't look real too me. I could be wrong. But doesn't it also seem a bit suspicious as well that they never show him , the board and the water at the same time ? If it were real they would pry be sure to show him on the board in the water lol..
@motion2000: Funny, the cast went to the trouble of making a real trip to Hawaii but couldn't have the actor playing Mr. Hooper surf for real at the beach? That sounds suspicious!
:-) *I WISH that Bob wold bare that chest of his.... good ole Mr Hooper... He rocks.. They should not laugh at him.. I would really love to see them do it.. I loved the end of that.... :-)
As a first generation Sesame Street viewer, I very fondly remember mr Hooper and was hoping some video would be put up so others could see how special he was. thanks for posting this :)
@CaptainSiberia I was thinking the same thing! What were they thinking?! Mr. Hooper was in his 70s(?) What if he had had a heart attack? (OK...so I may have laughed at Bob telling Mr. Hooper to "Hang 10" & Mr. Hooper saying back "Hang your own 10!") But seriously, it would have been tragic if something happened. How would SS have explained to kids .They (SS) only just got brave enough to explain death in 1983

It was just video tricks.. you can tell the ocean is just a backdrop on a screen

Evil thought: stop the video at 2:52, and you have an explanation of how Mr. Hooper died.

Mr. Hooper was 70 years old when this episode was recorded. An old age for a surfer.

You're never too old to be active, or to learn--I guess that was the reason this clip was included.

@GameShowNetwork He died four years later. The actor Will Lee, not the character.

Wow, Mr. Hooper had hairy arms and back!
The only thing missing is a tattoo anchor on his arm....

Guys are supposed be hairy. It's our nature.

Was he really surfing or just video tricks?
tvtimetravel 2 years ago
From what I can tell, the actor really is surfing--even though it looks difficult at his age.

They dare him to do something and then worry that it might not exactly be safe for him? That isn't good.
