The Police performance is exciting and powerful. This solo version is perhaps less exciting, because the rhythm isn't as fierce and driving. But I find it more moving. Here we get Sting's ghostly, wailing voice more clearly. And his final "sending out an SOS" trails away hauntingly.
Brilliant performance from a gifted vocalist. Too much delay on the vocal for me, but, still a stellar vocal. Sting should never sing this song and Roxanne ever again and simply show the video of this performance at his concerts and admit that he will never equal or accede this performance. Good job 1981 sting!!!
What makes me want to throw up... there are over 40 million hits on Lady Gaga's generic, tired, recycled crap.... and only 233K hits on pure beauty like this.
@DamianEatsNails consider yourself fortunate to enjoy it. Although if you ask Mr Gordon Summers himself, he'll probably have a good thing to say about Lady Gaga.
This has always been my favorite version. After 30 years it still holds that stance. Well done Sting- so always do it like this. I actually saw you do a sub-par performance of this, but fuck that, you still did this version, so even though not your best, it was memorable- translation is good. This is my fave Police tune. Well do
Ahh early Sting...that vox and the GI clothes look,he and phil of genesis wore so well. played liberally by MTV in the 80's. this influenced me and others greatly.
This is the best version of this song. His later versions I've found all wank it up with unnecessary schlock. There is a good lesson in simplicity here. This is pure art.
love this version very much, pure sens of this song, btw Sting said that's his best song; well... he got soo many great songs, but the fact is - this is one of the greatest...like tens of other
One guitar, one voice - echoing through the area about an allegory of the solitude we all feel on our own little island called our lives..Sting is a Zen master. By far this was his best version of the song because of his intensity.
This is a nice surprise...I love this. Back in the day when he could hit those high notes. Anyone have the version with him playing (upright, electric?) bass and singing this in a slower tempo? VH1 used to air it; they credited it to The Secret Policeman's Other Ball, as well. Pretty as he is, it's hard to imagine they let him play the same song twice, It'd be an excellent companion piece to this. I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find it.
If some of you know, Stewart Copeland was in the band Curved Air way before The Police formed, then he decided to go with a different direction of music.
Listen to the original version of this song w/ bass and drums, and you will see what i am talking about.
Curved Air is a progressive rock band, so the styles are somewhat there.
The Police, i thought was one of the best bands out there in the 80's. and i was born in '89. I discovered this trio later on in my life.
@kazarox101 Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only trouble is, he always seemed (and sometimes still seems) as if he knew it. A person is more attractive when they seem as if they don't know it.
It would have been interesting to hear Sting perform the song in this key while playing the lute instead of the guitar. Sort of like a medievil version.
@wvd1979 He did perform Message In A Bottle with the lute (check out his 'The Journey & The Labyrinth' DVD/CD album), albeit not in the same key. Sting hasn't been able to sing in this key for a long time! Still does well, though, in spite of his years!
I was in the navy when this first came out. I wore out the cassette.. Bob Geldoff and Johnny Fingers doing "I Don't Like Mondays", Sting doing this and "Roxanne" and, believe it or not, Phil Collins kicked ass on piano with "In The Air Tonite" and "The Roof is Leaking". They're all here on YouTube except for the last song. That had to be one hell of a concert...
awesome!!! its that dark in there and the lights being on him too he cant see not one person hes tottaly fixed into the song 100% with a load of passion brill version...
I remember taking out the cassette from Secret Policeman's Other Ball from the library years ago. There should be copies of it available out there - though I don't know in which form.
My favorite song ever is heard here with such depth and clarity at once. Sting's voice is unique: at 2:00 he almost seems to be crying. There is a sort of feminine touch to his singing which is transfixing. The song itself, a passionate plea for the unity of feeling, the loneliness we all share, is a true masterpiece which will always ring true.
