Most police shows are superficial, predictable, faux Hollywood garbage. You're always aware that they are TV shows. NYPD Blue put you -- front and center -- at the crime scenes, police station, streets, and everywhere else it artistically weaved its intricate web of believability. The line between reality and fiction was so artfully blurred that it confused our subconsciouses into believing the unreal. That was the brilliance of NYPD Blue. The directing/writing/acting mesmerized/legitimized.
I remember my mom watching this show, & the opening sequence never failed to captivate me. The visuals & music are absolutely remarkable--even more so in this extended version! ^_^ Splendid, splendid work! :D
Also, some comments & questions:
1. Can you explain what the shots at 0:33, 2:46, & 2:47 are of?
2. Jimmy Smits looks like he's wearing Dr. Strangelove glasses, LOL!
3. The women on this show are all very pretty... ^_^ (And doesn't Gail O'Grady look a lot like Jessica Lange?)
@anteatereaterant Caruso played John Kelly, Andy's partner in the first season. Unfortunately Caruso got a reputation for being extremely unpleasant to work with (even he admits that now). He made some outrageous demands (a five-fold salary bump, more emphasis on his character but somehow also more time off to make movies). Obviously the producers couldn't meet them so he quit and was replaced with Jimmy Smits who was much easier to work with. Caruso's movie career fizzled so he went to CSI.
wow!! cool video, thanks for posting. I was a faithful NYPD Blue viewer every Tuesday night for as long as I can remember. NYPD Blue is the BEST TV series of all time!!
@Hemakus I wasn't just faithful, I think I might have been a bit obsessed! I recorded it every week, because I wanted to enjoy the episodes again and again and I ended up with over 200 on tape. But a stupid mistake costed me. Recorded one from season 7, rewound it, but didn't get the chance to watch it. Then I recorded next weeks, without forwarding it!! So I lost the damn thing and it was a cracker! What a dummy. Always have fond memories of it though. And they showed lovely flesh.
Great post! I always loved the opening to NYPD Blue! Very gritty, shows New York in every possible light. Perfect backdrop for this finominal cast and show. I loved the first six seasons best, loved Gail O' Grady, sexy lady!
Mike Post said the inspiration for the theme was the sounds of subway trains on the tracks at the beginning and end and the quiet calm middle to represent the cops and detectives on duty. The human element amid the chaos of the big city.
I think Dennis Franz was the best character in the show. I particularly liked the way they shot the scenes and how they used the camera, with shots being distracted to see other things and catching up with the main subject.
This video is absolutely GREAT in every way possible!!! I just love the extended version of the legendary theme. NYPD Blue should still be on the air and I hope that they release more of it on dvd.
It really does crack me up : David Caruso who plays in the Experts, there is also the lawyer girl who plays a doctor in ER, Amy Brenneman who is Violet in Private Practice, and I also see an episode with Chief Weber of Grey's Anatomy...
aewsome. i gotta catch this show on DVD. There should be a cop show about Boston. ABout modern boston. And not just the the pretty pretty Boston around downtown. It should take place in and around places like CHalrestown, East Boston, Roxbury(where the police HQ is BTW), Dorchester, Mattapan and... OK fine, even Brighton/Allston.
Cool! Was there any order to how the actors were included or were they just put it randomly.
I always thought they should have made Michael B. Silver (ADA Leo Cohen) a regular. I think he was the best of the ADA's they had. Sure he butted heads with Andy but he wasn't a bad guy.
Mainly random except for the first three, who were the main stars. Although to my mind Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowicz was by far the best character. I just loved seeing those scenes in the interview room.
I had to make the piece up with John F. O'Donohue (Eddie Gibson) in as I couldn't find the original anywhere.
"NYPD Blue Theme," composed by Mike Post. This particular version of the song is also available on his album "Inventions from the Blue Line," which was an unofficial "NYPD Blue" soundtrack with tracks from other shows Post worked on thrown in.
