  • She said that she is "Black" many times. They have a picture of her father and he is African and her Mother is Canadian/German. She never tried to hide who she is.

  • Maybe Vanity made that statement about black men and maybe she didnt But a true fact is that she herself is black. LOOK at her and get over the light skin. She is black, Halle Berry is black and so is Mariah C. and Beyonce. What kind of ppl are obessed with if someone is biracial, usually black mixed with another race, and if that is someones real hair or not? Some ppl have too much time on their hands and no goals to work on.

  • ciara reminds me of vanity. if they make a film about vanity, ciara will be perfect to play her.

  • Prince last wife look like Vanity.

  • so horny

  • looking back at this video now...I never really appreciated her and this song. It's easy to peg her as a lightweight due to how she looks, and the content in this song...but it's actually musically a pretty good hook, and very witty the way she sings in that breathy Marilyn Monroe type voice. And she's got the great moves and eyes to go with it. I think she's more intelligent than people assumed.

  • ho hum

  • Ignorance begot ignorance... Everything comes from the black man and black woman/ the father and mother of civilization... everything looks better when black is mixed in it.... Black don't crack unless a black person does it...I'll be 37 this year, no crows feet nor wrinkle in the face :)

  • hey vanity your were fine back in the day and your still fine!!!!! you have alot of talent great performer!!!

  • Jet magazine interviewed her about her comments on the Joan Rivers show and she explained why she said it and that it was not meant to be racist. She said her father used to dress up in a gorilla costume and scare her and her sisters and that is why she said that. I used to have that issue. You can find it online. I think she knew that she needed to say something controversial in order for media coverage which she got and I think she had a album comming out and a movie.

  • She made the statement when she was being interviewed by Joan Rivers. She said that..."My mom loves gorrilas she married my dad and he is black....I also have a thing for gorrilas myself"....something like that. I thought it was kind of a poor choice of words. But, she was high.

  • OH,VAN,VAN"S you were so hot,then you went crazy,no,you did,everbody,thinks so even Jesus.He loves you,we love you,thanks for sharing this vid,you are so cool,Kay.

  • I'm shocked this was a single, let alone performed on Solid Gold--the lyrics are filthy. "...then he pulled a seam and it went all over..." LOL

  • NOW YALL KNOW SHE TALKING ABOUT CUMMIN,RIGHT.

  • Vanity wasn't much of a singer, but she had style in spades. She was a trendsetter who was ahead of her time. Apparently she was miserable through all her fame. I'm glad she got off the drugs and found some self respect and dignity for herself. She seems quite happy now that she has found jesus. Good for you Vanity.

  • wow...claire huxtable (Phylicia Rashad), was literally her identical twin in the early eighties with the only difference being shorter hair...both of them disgustingly beautiful!!

  • No one can touch her beauty... Not Sophia, Not Liz, Not Grace, Not Raquel, nor Angelina n Megan.... NOBODY!!!!

  • Simply one of the sexiest bitches ever to walk the planet.

  • lol!

  • gorgeous. talented. trendsetter. that's all that matters. <3

  • blacks love Vanity to this day, she could do no wrong. In fact, she was so loved that when an up and coming comedian made a joke about her on Apollo he was booed off stage. He was the first guest, not contestant, a guest performer, that I ever seen booed off the stage.

  • Okay, someone explain to me how she got away with this song on this program back then? People were aware of sex and innuendo even in the 80s.

I am not complaining, mind you, just wondering.

She was also pretty damn hot in the film The Last Dragon, where she gets away with another naughty song called 7th Heaven. With kids dancing to it no less!

  • at 2:11 i love that noise omg i kept playing it over and over

    <3

    :3

  • Her husband is one Lucky lucky man! i wish i had his luck! id be the marriedest guy in the world too!! lol

  • Vanity was the total QUEEN of the 80's. I loved her still do! And please, no fighting on here. Just watch and post good shit! :)

  • been looking for this performance for a long, long time. thanks for posting it.

  • Id make a pretty mess on her dress even to this day you heard!! Vanity or Denise Mathews is a Fine sister. My favorite woman of ALL TIME.

  • I love all Vanity songs, movies, everything, all day every day:)

  • I think the meaning of this song went way above people's heads back then.

  • Wow, I haven't seen Cooley Jackson in years. Loved to watch his amazing dance steps on Solid Gold back in the day.

  • LOL@DancingSpiderman's comment!

  • This is the Monica Lewinsky Stained Dress Evidence theme song

  • I like vanity but that song is awful

  • THaTssss my Baby HMMM MMmmmmmm sing it to Meee

  • Funny how there is nothing this good today- JLo, Beyonce, Ladt GaGa - none compare to Vanity

  • Words of wisdom!

  • Like I said, bless your heart sweetie. And I love Tiger Woods. I wish you could see the beauty in us looking different. I'm sorry it's so tiring to you. Bless you my sister.

  • I never said I didn't see it in Jet magazine because I did, (I think I might still have the book) but she did also make the statement on a talkshow.... so it was not impossible. Bless your heart, you are such an angry person. Why?? Please stop the hate. Nobody is attacking you. We are all beautiful black people whether light, dark, wide nose, thin nose, blue eyes, brown eyes, kinky to straight hair. We come in a wide range and it's all good. One love.

  • "We are all beautiful black people whether light, dark, wide nose, thin nose, blue eyes, brown eyes, kinky to straight hair. We come in a wide range and it's all good. One love. "

Thanks to outside blood...And I am not angry. Why do you people make it seem like somebody has to be a hater(u things overuse that word) or angry to speak facts?Sweetness u things always whine like lil bitches. Its so tiring.

  • @palomassong Well i dont think she is too much of angry person now if she's on tour in the gospel circuit. I'd like to know on what show she said that and why she would say that when she was in one of the most black Bruce Lee Parodys of all time. Maybe you got her mixed up with Mariah Carey or something....

  • @palomassong yall are very funny, funny conversations, btw i remember when vanity use to say "black as a gorilla" i use to laugh so hard when she said that, and i go tell my mom what she mean lol hilarious! i thank yall for making my day.

  • I love you Vanity!! I don't ever remember anyone hating her. For one thing, she only referred to her father as being "black as a gorilla"(referring to his shade of skin) I saw her make that statement on a talk show. And so what, some black men are shadow black, blue black, gorilla black, and so on, and I love it! That dark skin is hypnotic! (Wesley Snipes..yummm!!) But Vanity is black whether half black or whatever. I also know plenty of black people who are not mixed that look like that.

  • Well it was impossible to see Vanity say that on tv unless Jet Magazine had a tv show also.I remember it being in print in a interview with Jet...And I hope you are not considering a albino blk a mixed person?I call those half breeds Mixed people...But hey u guys hate Tiger woods bcuz he embrace both sides..Stop it with the lies Vanity is a flawless bi-racial woman

  • @palomassong I dont know people of ANY race that look like her.... She is beyond beautiful. Kissed by the hand of God.... :)

  • @babajohn0 well i was told i look like her,i'm also mixed i'm trying to get the footage uploaded so people can see me when i was younger,in the meantime check out my world premiere video on B E T "S video soul in 1994 hosted by donnie simpson,"BABY BE MINE" THE REMIX wit TEDDY RILEY &BLACKSTREET i'm the lite skin chick rubbin on channsey hannibal walkin thru the alley&sitting on the fire escape, btw i footage of myself dancing on "MTV THE GRIND SHOW" in 1993 and fans said i looked like denise

  • Love the lip sync..that is the way the shows did it back then

  • I love her clothing style in this. She can make any woman want to be more sensual and feminine...

  • I remember blks hated vanity because she compared blk men to apes/gorilla's...I believe it was Jet magazine i have to find it...

  • Really? She is half black.....wonder where this article is.

  • @VanityBonet. Wow. Ignorance is alive and well and calling itself Vanitybonet on YouTube.

Ah yeah. Because our race was raped so frequently while being enslaved in this country, blacks range from (as Leedart said) dark to white and everything in between.

Mya, Sade, Beyonce, and many others considered to be the most beautiful women on this planet (current Ms. America and Universe are black as is our President) are all light skinned yet 100% black people.

Just focus on her beauty. Idiot!!!

  • naw dear i am a blk bitch and every woman u just named all have a euro background. Its obvious you read nothing at all here u dumb azz blk bitch....NICE TRY DUMB AZZ

    LMFAO @ Mya, Sade, Beyonce,LMFAO

    SMFH

  • And dena i doubt if it wass all rape baby...As it turns out more blk men rape interracially more so than any group of people...Other people prefer committing such atrocity's against their own than vice versa so I am sure that was the case than also...Miss Shaneiqa in the slave days was just giving up the pussy to massa more than likely....

  • Vanitybonet- Your sooo ignorant, and probably ugly!

I am three generations black(all), my cousin is Lena Horne, and my whole family ranges in color from chocolate to light-white, and passing. Brown eyes, to blue. AGAIN, I say all black for generations. You have to be either white( which I think you are, and sick and twisted), or a miseducated black person( and if the latter-you're the negro)!!!!!!! JUST RUDE.

  • and lena horne is no full negro so what was your point again? And a white negro would be a albino right?sorry but a negro albino look different than a white albino I can still tell a blk albino is a negro...And darling what is your excuse u r that light skinned and that fycking ugly...

  • Vanity has a new song on Amazon for$ 0,89

  • Pretty Mess on my dress...reminds me of former President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky!!

  • Does anyone seem to think that for Solid Gold the chorus was cleaned up to say "we made such a pretty mess of my dress" instead of "on my dress"? I keep hearing 'of my".... maybe its wishful thinking, since its Solid Gold and the censors would have not liked references to oral sex on their show.

  • And another thing:

    Like I said previously -

She named the song "Pretty Mess" because "dress" does not rhyme with "mouth"! lol.

  • horrible song, poor lady, read she has to do home dialysis five times a day because her kidneys are kaput...testament to why NOT to do drugs...

  • Prince has been trying to clone her ever since, all his women look like her

  • truest comment ever

  • @SMAXX

You said it, that is so true.

  • Back then, you had to look a certain way to catch a person's eye. People were so damn shallow then.

  • Unbelievable what the one dancer does at 1:36 with his leg. Unfortunately the cameraman goes down to the audience so he missed catching the whole scene. Great track by Vanity, by the way.

  • That was pretty unbelievable!! What is he-- made of rubber?? :) Yep, Vanity was very beautiful and talented. Definitely like a real live Jem.

  • That was probably on pupose. That dancing gesture seemed to indicate sexual penetration toward Vanity. I'm sure the camaraman knew to pan downward very soon after the dance move began just to give people a taste of its suggestion but not to offend anyone else. Yep, the 80s were gross and puritanical at the same time. Interesting song though. Have you guys seen "Under The Influence"? That was cool song by her. Peace to you all.

  • Just a side note..or two:

    1. The front row got quite a few views of her crotch

    2. The Rick Dees intro: in the 80's you could have those chubsters up in front of the camera...TODAY ? - not so much. All show showing the audience during the musical guest intro stage the GOOD looking chix in front.

    80's mannn!

  • @dominoize Geez, wait til you get fat someday... it will happen eventually to all of us... i'd love to see what people say of the fat old geezer, which YOU will become. Man, we are so overly critical of people/women who don't fit into a Vogue magazine standard of beauty.

  • Errr...I was DISSING the fact that they did that type of thing today.

  • @dominoize Sorry. Maybe i misread your message because if you re-read it, it does sound a bit fragmented- the sentences, that is. Sorry. :)

  • Nope. I meant to write it that way. Read it aloud and you'll get what I am saying. :)

  • Damn! She was fine! Great performer.

  • Vanity is like a Real Life Jem in this performance.

  • Yea...she was Truly Outrageous! lol.

    LOVE HER!!!

  • I can't believe they showed those fat people in the beginning. I'm pretty impressed, because dance shows usually never show fat people. LOL

  • :/

you can't believe they showed those fat people...lawd...(shakin' my head)

  • Her father was black and indian and her mother was german.

  • She is African and German.

  • I could of sworn she was french canadian, african(i think i seen a pic of her father and she look nothing like that ugly azz man),german

  • her father was black

  • Yes her Father I think I did put Africa in there also...She look more like her Euro mother than say her ugly Father...

  • is she black??

  • yeah

  • No she is mulatto

a pure black does not look like that eventho my blk people wishes

  • @VANITYBONET she is exotic looking and many whites wish they could look like her as well but for the most part she is black.. far from blond hair and blue eyes... today she looks all the way black..Aaliyah was black and not biracial and some of her picks remind me of vanity...

  • i know plenty non-mulatto who look exactly like that

  • Flutter well mulatto mean white/blk so you might do...But a pure negro can't create something like that with those type of features..Blks would love to claim it but cant...Notice I said pure negro

  • @VANITYBONET YEP!!

  • @Flutter13ee NOT ME...

  • Vanity is gorgeous, but that horrific 80's hair does her beauty no justice.

  • I think Vanity must have performed the whole song, and before it was shown on TV it was edited. Because if you look from 1:15-1:17, when the shot changes Vanity is in a different position on the stage.

  • Good eyes. I never noticed that before.

  • I hate that the entire second verse was edited out

I wonder what she did in that second verse

  • It's funny that the 80s and solid gold was like an innocent time, and her comes vanity with the cum on my dress song. LOL!!! Even the kids in the from audience was like huh?

  • She was totaling flirting with that white guy dancer! LoL.

  • Andy says (23:18): pretty cool vid look at her goddam hair it's fantastic would like her as a gf? takin' her out to a classy restaurent

    Graham says (23:18): yes

  • I think Rick Dees should have replaced Dick Clark on American Bandstand in 1989

  • "and then he found a hole and went all the way" - WOW -

  • Thats not what she says. She says "and then he found a hallway that went all the way". The lyrics are on her album Wild Animal.

  • I was 7 when I saw this performance 25 years ago.

  • I know I am with you SwitchbladeKitty and tubecrazy4u! I am in love with Vanity. I am doing a tribute site on myspace of her with all of her videos and stuff.

  • they can't take vanity. she was ahead of her time! she betta serve the girls!!!!

  • In her heels go girl

  • LMAO @ "This song is dirtier than shit"

  • This song is dirtier than shit! LOL

  • The soundtrack to my life!

  • I am class of 1986 and I am wondering how in the heck do you come up with a dance routine for this tune. It seems so hard to dance to. Props to the Solid Gold Dancer for having a dance routine for this song. Vanity Rocks

  • I am a true vanity fan. I have so much stuff of hers , you would not believe!!!

  • if its footage, send me some!!! lol.

  • Vibrator is funny as hell.

  • love that song!

  • In some weird way she reminds me of Diana Ross. That's a compliment.

  • hotter than hot

  • I was obsessed with this song. it's fuckin amazing. How anyone can say its shit I dont know. And I was 18 and now 42 and it still feels the same. Too bad she went to Jesus.........just kidding better than the crack pipe i guess..

  • It is a great song. I'm 23 years old and I still like it.

  • @richboy818 I am 41... I am the exact same mix as her and I wanted to be her when I was young!! :) I met her 8 years ago at a Church program and I took a picture with her. She was great...

  • I love her but this song was a pretty mess! Everbody knows it too. lol

  • It went gold so it must have been a golden pretty mess.

  • It's a great pop song, it went way further than Madonna would even dare.

  • Madonna is a professional with professional people around her management and marketing.. that's the key to success..

  • and talent.

  • @facundorox That's a great observation... but even Madge had her limits. ;) Prince was a perv... all his songs were double entendre songs or just straight out obscene, so it doesn't surprise me that he encouraged Vanity to write this song with those lyrics. Hehe.

  • I can't lie. When the album "Wild Animal" came out in 1984, I was surprised how many teenagers in my 'hood' fell in love with it. I know I did. All the mulatto girls in school pranced around singing Vanity songs, and imitating her movements. They all looked cute imitating Vanity and many of them thought they were great singers.

This LP was good because every song was solid, and Vanity had a very theatrical, girly style of singing. Her voice reminded me of Marilyn Monroe.

  • She is Wicked!

  • May I remid everyone that you did not get on solid gold unless you had a gold record!!!She went gold at least three times including Vanity 6.

  • If someone doesn't remake this song then I'll go ahead and do it. LOL

  • I have always loved her...one of my moms favorites..She sort of has that Halle Berry thing about her

  • oooh I so agree with you crystinamaire89 Vanity does have that whole exotic halle look goin...

  • good thing they are from different eras...Halle who???

    Vanity the best ever!

  • this song was made fun of on vh1 for the most awesomely bad dirrrty songs...and it belongs on that list lol

  • great quality!

  • The absolute MOST ATTRACTIVE woman Prince ever got his hands on. None of the others compare.

  • Susan is cute, but no Vanity.

  • Susan......too weak, Vanity has the POWERFUL sexappeal that gets attention and Susan is just too shy on stage......cute but not FIRE LIKE VANITY!!!

  • Snow Queen

  • I can't believe this dirty song was allowed on Solid Gold!!

  • I love this song, but I don't think she's singing that live lol

  • I dont think anybody song live on this show

  • you make such a pretty mess on my dress - a song about semen stains

  • This song always reminds of Monica Lewinsky! LMFAO!!!!

  • God I miss her!! She was sooo HOT. I think it's great that she's "found God" and all, but don't think she should completely abandoned "Vanity".... She can still entertain and revive the gorgeous woman we all fell in love with and leave the drugs behind... Come on, Denise!!!!

  • one fine woman from another fine woman

  • Vanity found her style through Prince and that's it. She left Prince and did very well for herself. She was making millions of dollars without that short purple toad. She has more beauty than Prince every will have. How dare he say that she was his fuckin reflection. Hahahaha Vanity is the grandest that even men wanted to be her......

  • She did well without thfkap...she designed her own clothes and she wrote he own music. She went gold and then platinum. She is an Icon forever even after she dies she will still be known until the END OF TIME.....HAHAHAHA

  • shE HAS THE PERFECT NAME FOR HOW FINE SHE IS....VANITY IS A RELECTION OF ALL THAT IS BEAUTIFUL...SHE HAD THE FACE AND THE BODY TO MAKE MEN WEAK...NO ONE COULD COMPARE TO HER...

  • I bought Vanitys Skin on Skin album today. Great album. Found it and only paid $6.00!

  • Thanks for posting. Brings back a lot of good memories from that era. Man, I miss the 80's. Vanity ruled the 80's. Was trying to see a live performance of her singing 7th Heaven. Can't find it anywhere. Did find The Last Dragon at Best Buy though. Classic but somewhat corny movie. lol Still love it though

  • There's a lot about her in Nikki Sixx's book, Heroin Diaries. She was REALLY messed up on drugs during this time.

  • She was hotter than Jennifer Beals.

  • Vanity was a showstopper. I was in kid when she first appeared on the scene and she always looked under the influence to me. Even then I couldn't believe she would come out alive at the rate she was going. She looked like a dope head. I used to think Prince's women were druggies. Am I wrong? Thanks for the heads up on Nikki Sixx's book. It's now on my list of summer reads.

  • She's a huge Jesus freak now. She carries around a gigantic bible for fending off demons. (no joke)

    P.S.

LMAO @ "...and then he found a hallway that went all the way..."

Hehehehe, God I loved the 80's.

  • I wish somebody would stick that bible up her arse

  • im sure satan will be trying that procedure out on you. hope it wont hurt too bad!!

  • still believe in badly written myths huh

  • She is way too hard on herself. I can only guess that when you are an addict that you exchange one addiction for another. Now she is addicted to Christ(which is not a bad thing), but she should learn to forgive herself and move on and have a life.

  • yeah, canae understand why she gave it all up....there something bowt her,,,,,,..a true performer......yeah,commanding to the max!

  • dammmmmmmmmmmmmmm!she was hot

  • I love her live performances. So many people love her to this day. I totally get her.

  • I kno thats rite!

  • Thanks for the video! She was so beautiful in this clip! I love how the crowd just started clapping to the beat of the song. She was good at commanding everyone's attention! Do you have any other performances?
