I hope one day to see the Delta Queen on the water again. I am sure it came here to visit Pittsburgh PA when we had the Regatta's and I am not sure if Pittsburgh still does that or not. I live in Cranberry Twp. PA now and I do know they took the Southside Fair away too. (Too many bars! No stores, just bars!) So there ya go. Another good thing no one wants to do.
This would be Capt. Gabriel Chengery playing calliope. How can you tell? Other than the fact that he played her calliope on the last trip all the way to NOLA, he's one of the only folks who can play "My Blue Heaven" just like Capt. Doc Hawley does.
I'll miss it, I hope they do manage to get it back onto the rivers again. I grew up along the Mississippi in Iowa and I remember once in a rare while we'd see it go by, usually when we were driving along the river, and my Dad would tell me "look, there's the Delta Queen!". I think growing up we even had a print of a painting of it hanging in the living room. Good memories, lets hope for the best.
@pcnerd2 Congress failed to give the boat an exemption from the SOLAS that she had gotten from 1970 and said the boat was unsafe. A big money company could return the boat to the rivers because we all know congress can be bought. Sadly, the working/middle class people have no such power.
@baritonebynight unsafe my ass, all I've seen is videos of it on youtube and I'd trust it more than some of those ships that somehow get passed to sail on the open seas. It's sad to hear it's not running, but I read somewhere that it's being kept in an operational condition which is what I like to hear. I can bet at the time and even now there are a few people who want to fire her up and ride her down the river going "F**K CONGRESS" hahahaha :P
Thanks for the posting. I grew up along the Ohio River near Cincinnati. When the calliope sounds started wafting through the neighborhood, me and my friends would run to the river. What a beautiful boat, what wonderful memories! If you are interested in the history of the Delta Queen , please check out the captaindemarrero channel, here on youtube. He is the only surviving Commodore of the Delta Queen Lines and shares a lot of stories about his 50+ years as a riverboat captain.

The poor Delta Queen! I hope they can save her from spending the rest of her days as a floating hotel! That song almost sounds sad and melancholy...
