If you listen to the original Fame by Irene Cara you'll notice that in the parts where Willa growls there aren't high notes in those parts so she isn't trying to cover for anything. She was probably just trying to show off her voice. It was only ok in the end

Amazing singing, but i feel like the pros could have done something BIG. its such a BIG song, and with a voice that big singing that song... come on do something more exciting. Come on now, Willa doesnt "growl" to avoid the high notes. She hits high notes. She "growls" because that is a method she uses. Most think it is quite sexy - listen to her other songs, and remember, she is the "bad girl of pop". She did a great job on this song - as did the pros (as always)

Do you really consider "not lip syncing" to be an achievement when the person's profession is supposed to be singer? Gosh... Willa can't sing the high notes on this song, which is why she growls.
